I generally leave my desktop in standby mode (XP) because it takes quite a while to reboot after I've shut it down completely. I'm totally non-techie, so pardon my elementary question, but am I using up much power leaving it in standby all the time? My mom shuts hers down every night.

I leave mine on Maybe that's why it will explode soon.

Nope, switching a computer on-and-off causes most of the wear&tear on the system.
Leaving a computer in standby uses less power than leaving your tv plugged in: the tv's "instant on" feature uses about as much power as a standard lightbulb.
Leave the computer itself running and shut off your computer monitor between sessions, and you'll eliminate most of that power usage. Especially if the monitor is a CRT.

Thanks, standby it remains, then.

I'm a hibernator, except I reboot from scratch every week or something. Is that a reasonable thing to do?
