What exactly does it do when you type in just the address? (BTW, Firefox will probably fix the problem)

thanks firefox does work, ... but with explorer, if I would type in google.com the page would not load, but i found that if i type http://google.com it would load. I was wondering if there was a setting that I could change that would fix this. -dab

well, I'm old-school, so I always put the www. in front of everything But if you go to Tools -> Internet Options -> Advanced tab If "Always send URLs as UTF-8" is unchecked, that's probably your problem.
edit: I think. I'm not sure

Check under tools..then internet options..then advanced...check there to see what you have clicked under search from the address bar...I think you want just go to the most likely source
