There are probably a ton of them. I like a couple.

My favorites are:

"Blitzkrieg Bop" by Rob Zombie (Originally The Ramones)

"Brickhouse 2000" by Rob Zombie (Originally I don't know)

"Word Up" by Korn (Originally by The Comodores?)

"Another Brick in the Wall Pts. 1-3" by Korn (Originally by Pink Floyd)

"Live and Let Die" by Guns 'N' Roses (Originally by Wings)

What are some of your favorites?

Posted by Tinros (Member # 8328) on :

"Smooth Criminal" by Alien Ant Farm. The original was Michael Jackson, and personally, the AAF version is a little more rock, but I think it's better.

Posted by SteveRogers (Member # 7130) on :

Another one is:

"Spin Me Right Round" by Powerman 5000 (Originally by Dead or Alive)

Posted by Dr Strangelove (Member # 8331) on :

"Simple Man" by Shinedown (originally Lynyrd Skynyrd) isn't bad. I personally like the Skynyrd version better, but Shinedown does a decent job.

Edit to add: I wholeheartedly agree with "Smooth Criminal". I can remember the first time me and my friend heard the Michael Jackson version ... we were repulsed.

I was very close to beating you up over cyberspace if you seriously liked the remake better.

I'll admit, it's decent. But there is no way you can compare it to the original.

Wasn't there a thread like this relatively recently?

Yes, yes there was.

It started some time ago, but was still active as recently as last fall.

I'm sorry, I didn't know that thread existed.

Mark Jonathan Davis did a cover of, "Down with the Sickness," originally by Disturbed, for Dawn of the Dead. Better than the original.

The Gourds bluegrass version of "Gin and Juice," originally by Snoop Dogg. Also better than the original.

You mean Richard Cheese?

Posted by Noemon (Member # 1115) on :

No problem Steve--I'm sorry for coming off so snarky.

Posted by Celaeno (Member # 8562) on :

Mmm...Richard Cheese. His Come Out and Play, originally by Offspring, is absolutely amazing. Though most of his covers are great, that's my current favorite (and it might be because of the xylo).

I also like Keali'i Reichel's version of In My Life better than the Beatles', and I love the Beatles.

Posted by Noemon (Member # 1115) on :

I'd be curious to hear that, Celaeno--I've never heard a Beatles cover that held a candle to the original. I went to Keali'i Reichel's site and found what I thought was going to be a sample of the song on this page, but I'm guessing that isn't what you were talking about. Is that a lead-in for the Beatles song or something?

I don't know. In regards to that cover, I've heard it attributed to The Gourds, Richard Cheese, Phish, and even the Dave Matthews Band. I originally thought it was Phish, but Wikipedia says The Gourds.

Ever heard Kalapana's version of Here, There, and Everywhere?

That's just the intro. I can email it to you if you'd like.

"Que Sera" Done by Sly and Family Stone is up there with my favs

Also I -kind of- like the Christopher O'Riley "Radiohead" cd where he plays arragnements of alot of their songs for solo piano.

No, but I'd love to.

So I just went to Kalapana's website. Someone really needs to redo it for them. I gave up. Do you think you could email it? I'm going to email you my email address because the forum mail thing doesn't allow attachments.

Trace Bundy does a song called Hot Capo Stew that's a medley of covers. I didn't recognize the song played in the clip but it could just be his outro. Right click and save as on the link, just clicking on it didn't work for me.

Check out his other videos too. They're all amazing.

A couple years ago when erosomniac was trying to organize a tour for him, I got in contact with our student events' coordinator at my school, but the whole thing never went through. It's too bad; he would've been amazing to see.

Widespread Panic does a HILARIOUS version of it as well.

We saw him...last month? when he did a concert at some middle school (which was the nicest freaking middle school I've ever seen, by the way). We were all the way in the back row and the tallest asians ever (besides ero) were sitting in front of us, but it was still awesome. Trace is so quirky, I was laughing through most of his monologues.

Elton John - Lucy in the Sky (With Diamonds)
Elton John - Pinball Wizard
Bananarama - Venus
Bananarama - Help!
Bangles - Hazy Shade of Winter
Eric Clapton (Unplugged) - Layla
Blink 182 - Seasons in the Sun
Judy Collins - Both Sides Now
Manfred Mann's Earth Band - Blinded by the Light
Manfred Mann's Earth Band - (I Came) For You
Joe Cocker - A Little Help from My Friends

Two points if you can name the original artists for each of these.

Posted by Uprooted (Member # 8353) on :

Lucy in the Sky - Beatles
Pinball Wizard - The Who
Venus - ?
Help! - Beatles (don't know the cover, I assume it's the same Help!)
Hazy Shade of Winter - Simon & Garfunkel
Layla - also Clapton, in Derek & the Dominoes
Seasons in the Sun - Terry Jacks
Blinded by the Light - Bruce Springsteen
(I Came) for You - ?
A Little Help from my Friends - Beatles

Do I get 1 point? I could have googled the others, but figured that was cheating!

To be totally uncool, I actually like Disturbed's "Shout 2000." It's really different than the Tears for Fears original, but it's...fun.

And there's this part where David Draiman goes:
As cold as ice (*growly kind of whispery voice* your ritual! Ice, ice, bay-bee...)

It makes me giggle.

Speaking of Tears for Fears, I really like the Gary Jules (Donnie Darko) version of Mad World.

The original Sesame Street Theme Song had a kind of jazzy syncopation to it. Then they remade it to a Latin beat. Still good, just different.

Also, the ABBA songs that were so popular when I was in high school seem to have come back a generation later, now that my kid is high school aged. It is weird for me to hear these young kids singing ABBA songs as if they were cool, which, of course, they never were.

It drives my son nuts, but I can't ever get the words to "Dancing Queen" straight in my head, so I just make them up:

Dancing Queen, tangerine, magazine!
Nectarine! Tambourine! Jumping around on a big trampoline!
Dancing Queen, ruptured spleen, you are the Dancing Queen."

Does anyone know the female artist who redid "Sweet Jane" by Lou Reed/Velvet Underground? I've been looking for that one.

Posted by pH (Member # 1350) on :

I really want to know who did the original of that song "I Want You."

The chorus is, "Well you do you do you do you do you do you do you do, you make me want you..."

I've heard two different versions.

According to the same site (and a google lyrics search), it's Third Eye Blind.

You definitely get a point. A point and a half for Derek and the Dominos. Most people I've tried that on have said Eric Clapton.

(I Came) For You is also Springsteen, and Venus is... well, I think it's The Shocking Blue, but I'm not 100% sure if they were first.

When I was 12, we did Sesame Street in Hebrew up at camp. I still remember the dance steps to most of the songs (as do a bunch of my friends from that year).

בדרכי לנשום אויר נקי
בבקשה מה הכיוון לרחוב ססמי

Dope, You Spin Me Right Round (originally by Dead or Alive)
The Tea Party, Paint it Black (originally by the Doors)
Luxt, The Safety Dance (originally by Men Without Hats)
Firewater, Diamonds and Gold (originally by Tom Waits)

I really love the Richard Cheese version of "Down With The Sickness" too [Smile]

David G, I can't follow Celaeno's link from work, but The Cowboy Junkies have a phenomenally good cover of Sweet Jane. If that wasn't what she linked you to (and so wasn't what you were thinking of) it's definitely worth checking out.

Jimmy Buffett's cover of Brown Eyed Girl.

In terms of Beatles covers, I've never heard one that could really hold a candle to the original. The best of them take the song in a completely different direction. Bela Fleck and the Flecktones' cover of Michelle is the best example I've heard of what I'm talking about--they really own their version of it--and the Keali'i Reichel version Celaeno was talking about definitely goes in that direction too. Stanley Jordan has a cover of Elanor Rigby on his album Magic Touch that I like quite a bit, and again it's definitely an interpretation of the song rather than a rendetion of someone else's performance.

Non-Beatles examples of what I'm talking about would include Hendrix's cover of All Along the Watchtower and Crosby Stills & Nash's cover of Woodstock.

Noemon, it was in fact the Cowboy Junkies' version of "Sweet Jane" that I was looking for and which was revealed in Celaeno's link. Phenomenal indeed.

Yeah, isn't it? Surpasses the original in my book.

Celaeno, are you sure? Because I heard the Alana Davis version...let's see...I think her second CD came out in...99?

pH, I'm definitely not sure (being as I've never heard the song), but that's what this said.
