Hi everybody-

I am writing a second song in my series of Edgar Allan Poe settings. This one is going to be in immitation of the styles of Debussy, Wolf, Mahler and Ravel (so alot of lee-way here).

I am setting the poem "A Dream," which is one of Poe's youthful efforts. My request is for suggestions on a complementary set of lines from another poem, from any author before 1920. The lines I will set from "A Dream" are these:

In visions of the the dark night
I have dreamed of joy departed
But a waking dream of life and light
Hath left me broken Hearted

That holy dream, that holy dream
While all the world were chiding,
Hath cheered me as a lovely bream
A lonely spirit guiding

I need some lines about dreams from another poem to complement these lines. I don't like the other two stanzas from this poem, they don't work well in the music I want to write.

It can be anything on dreams from Shakespeare to Elliot. All should be in English, and in a similar meter (that's negotiable).

Thanks!

Why before 1920?

You might try Stephen Vincent Benet's Nightmare #3

Or maybe Nightmare with angels...

Anyway, they don't meet your 1920 criterion.

Is that a copyright cut off or something, or are you just looking for slightly dated word usage?

It is a copyright issue yah, but also the work needs to be consistent with time period of the syle, so I don't want to be immitating a Ravelian or Debussian style and using something more modern than that. It would be a problem for me to mix two different period ideologies. Besides that, the assignment is for a comp class and those are rules.

Every time I see the thread title all I can think of is the Everly Brothers song.

Well Bob, you could always think of something within those parameters... [Wink] Thanks anyway

Anybody else?

Hmmm. I thought this thread was going to be something related to Firefly. The word verse has never meant the same thing since.
