For those of you familiar with the band, what do you think of the newest single?

I'm skeptical now. The band was originally in essence two guys, Gary Lightbody (the singer) and that other dude who played keyboard or guitar or something, I forget. The other dude left.

Now, they sound a lot more pop rock than their previous albums. I mean, I'm all for artistic growth, but I think you do need to keep that "thing" that makes the band...the band.

Like Orgy. First album, very synth, very sexy. Second album, synthy and rock and still sexy. Third album...uh, there are attempts at rapping and screaming?

I really hope this single isn't representative of the rest of the album. Snow Patrol have this kind of sad, beautiful element to them that I'm not yet hearing in "Hands Open."

Has anyone else heard it? What did you think?

Hands Open, indeed, is not a very Snow Patrol-sounding song. It's too generic and quite muddy-sounding; not very crisp. The great thing about Snow Patrol is how distinct and crisp their songs have sounded (especially on Final Straw) until now.

The rest of the new album does sound pretty generic and is, to me, a big disappointment, because I really thought Final Straw was something of an underappreciated gem.

This albyum is about half generic alt-rock where-did-snow-patrol-go songs, and about half there-they-are! songs.

Stand out tracks: Shut Your Eyes, Make This Go On Forever.

Others may disagree.

Hmmmm...I'm debating making a trip out to Best Buy to purchase it...I'm trying to get my hands on physical copies of all the Snow Patrol CDs. I've got Songs for Polar Bears and Final Straw right now. I have all the remixes and singles and When It's All Over We Still Have to Clear Up on my computer.

I'm just really afraid to listen to this one. [Frown] I get really upset when bands stop doing what it is that makes me like them. Snow Patrol had very cool, unique sounds in their songs. And they used weird electronic type effects that made them even cooler.

And of course, "Starfighter Pilot." Need I say more?

I'm scared. I don't want to have to kick Gary Lightbody in the junk.

Anybody know if the guy who left has a side project? Maybe he left because everybody else wanted to be generic commercial pop rock, and he wanted to be Snow Patrol. If so, we must marry.

I'm going to see them in concert next month.

I really should hear more of their music, other than "Run" I don't know all that much.

They're amazing live; I saw them a year ago.

*kicks Lyrhawn in the junk for getting to see them*

Oh, no, I love Snow Patrol. I was looking forward to this, but hadn't had time to check it out yet. Hmm...now I'll definitely listen to it before I purchase it.

Lyrhawn, they're really fun in concert.

What is everyone's top five Snow Patrol songs?

Give me an idea on what to brush up on first. I have a month to become Snow-savvy so my best friend doesn't kill me for not singing along.

Hey!

I haven't bought the new album, but heard a bit in a music shop last week, and it sounded pretty cool.

I really liked their last one, and so bought 'When It's All Over We Still Have to Clear Up' which is a bit less polished, but still v. good.

I love the first track on Final Straw, where he's recounting an argument with his girlfriend

Honestly, I think the album does not sound that different from Final Straw. I've been listening to Eyes Open the last week or two and really enjoying it.

Considering I only have one album, my choices are somewhat limited.

Chocolate
Run
How to be Dead

Beyone those three, I'm not too sure what I like the most.

I didn't know they had a new album, in fact, I wasn't too aware of their previous albums either, but I do like what I've heard a lot and plan on going to their show next month. I'll have to check out their other albums before then.

Well, the album dropped yesterday.

I'm listening to it on Napster and trying to decide if I want to buy it.

The thing is, it's not really calling to me right now. Their last albums have, for the most part, had an irresistable draw. This album sounds really....skeletal, from a sound standpoint.

Wait, no. Track 6. "You Could Be Happy." It has potential. Wait for it...wait for it...still waiting...dammit, something needs to happen....SOMEONE MAKE SOMETHING HAPPEN.

Got bored. Moving on.

"It's Beginning to Get to Me." This is it. This is the track that has saved the album for me. Now, I'll buy it. If it's not too expensive.

I'm still disappointed, though. This album seems to have no "Ways & Means" equivalent. The first album had "100 Things You Should Have Done in Bed," and the second had "One Night Is Not Enough." The songs on this album aren't as memorable to me. And the lyrics aren't as striking, either.

This album is the Pepsi Edge of Snow Patrol.

I think I've figured out the difference.

In this album, he has a girlfriend. And is happier.

Or at least, he has a girlfriend for most of the album.

In the other albums, he didn't have a girlfriend for most of the songs.

Now I kind of like it, but if that girlfriend leaves you, baby, give me a call. [Wink]

This describes pretty much the entire modern music scene, from where I'm standing.

"Yes, yes, you've written a very nice eight bars. And that's a good, um....Is that a bridge? Because it sounded like a bridge, but then we just have those eight bars over and over again." It makes me want to grab all these scrabbly-bearded young pseudo-troubadors by the hairs of their nostrils.

I haven't heard the new song, but I love their older stuff.

I really like Set Fire to the Third Bar. I usually don't like duets but this one I like a LOT.
