This happened just miles away from where I live. it just blows my mind why someone would do this, for no motive at all. They raided the guy's house after it happened and found even more guns that the ones he brought along.

Some people are just pyscho.

I've been following this story very closely up until this weekend. Here's the sequence of events as best I can tell.

1.) The suspect escaped or left a mental instution in Maryland. It's not clear how secure the institution was supposed to be, but they reported his being missing to the police.
2.) The suspect carjacked a car near the institution.
3.) Some hours later, he turned himself in to Fairfax, VA police officers.
4.) He was extradited to MD.
5.) The judge let him out to await trial on 30,000 bond. I haven't been able to discover if the judge knew that he had been in a psychiatric institution up until the night of the carjacking.
6.) A month or so later, the suspect attempted to carjack someone who ran away. Minutes later he carjacked another person, but he let them take stuff out of the car first.
7.) He drove to the Farifax station where he had turned himself in and hid between two cars, then opened up.

This happened about a 3 miles from where I lived most of the 11 years between college and law school. There are a lot of questions that need answering.

I still can't seem to think up a motive. I read in the paper that he was perfectly sane up until a few days before he went to the mental instution. Its sorta like that Son of Sam guy who just shot random people. Some guy packing heat just randomly opens up on a cop.

I've been following this story, too. It hit very close to home for several reasons. One, I was caught in the traffic jam caused by the manhunt (for a while, they thought there was a second gunman). Two, I have kids this kid's age. The picture of him haunts me. Three, I have a mentally ill child. I keep thinking of this boy's family. Eighteen years ago, they had a baby boy in their arms. Now they have questions and agony.

(I don't ignore the loss of the police officer, her life, her children's tragic loss. This is an awful, awful situation, all the way around.)
