After reading countless rumors about how Gibson's upcoming Mayan-centric movie would be "propaganda! It'll portray the Mayans as evil pagan barbarians and the Spaniards as heroic, clean Christians!"...I did a search for known facts about the film.

I located the following article, published by Time:

"Apocalypto Now", from the March 27th, 2006 issue...

Hmmmm.

So, the film takes place 500 years before the European's arrived, and could be interpreted as a condemnation of the scare tactics of the George W. Bush presidency.

Interesting.

Edit: Punctuation corrected.

I hadn't heard anything about the movie at all. I didn't see The Passion, but I have some interest in seeing this.

What twinky said.

This sounds like a much more interesting premise for a movie.

EDIT - plus, panther mauling!

I posted a thread about its teaser trailer a few months ago...but can't find it upon doing a search. Odd. [Confused]

Yeah, I read this article when it was originally released, pretty interesting stuff. I'd love to know how exactly Yucatec Maya sounds, I imagine it as a clicking sound in my head.

Then again, I imagine every foreign language as a clicking sound.

Click, click...*hides*

So many questions for this movie...

First of all, what exactly is the plot? Judging from the teaser, it looks like the Mayans are trying to form a new cross country team for the South American olympics, and they sure do need the training, what with the panthers out there and all.

Second, if this is supposed to have ANY basis in fact, where are Gibson's sources?

Much as I love to see ancient civilizations come alive through the power of film, I also hate it when they're just CGIed and fiddled with so much to the point where it's just fiction with a nice truth based graham cracker crust. Might be delicious on the outside, but the rest is all filler.

You forgot the chewy panther-mauling core. [Smile]

I guess it's more of a meat pie. Which I would have suggested, except that implies substance, which I'd find misleading.

The plot and source material is to be found in the Time article, linked in my first post. [Smile]

This could be a great movie, or a really really bad one. [Big Grin]
