Also sorry that I missed the "couldn't have both" part of your question since I was flustered from not posting soon enough. Interesting discussions could come from your question though as I have a different POV but your points are well taken.

The 4th of July, without a doubt. There's a fantastic little parade in our town- we know many of the people, so we're always there to wave and spray them with hoses/squirt guns/ water balloons. Afterwards loads and loads of people come to our house for lots of food and tubing, skiing and swimming. About 9:30 that night the lake puts on a fireworks show. There is no such thing as a bad seat there. My uncle puts on a pre-fireworks fireworks show and usually sets the trees on fire.

And, wouldn't you know, I'm going to miss it this year.

No, see, the grass is not actually greener over on the other side of the fence, it's just that it appears to be greener over there because the fence is a symbol of our boundaries; our perception that the grass is greener on the other side is simply representative of our desire to be free of those limitations.

If the earth left orbit and began sailing away from the sun, how long would humanity last?

Posted by suminonA (Member # 8757) on :

I suppose you’re thinking of a “spiraling away" scenario. So it would depend on the rate of the increasing distance between the Earth and the Sun. As it would get farther and farther, the (average) temperature would drop and drop and eventually everything (including “hell”) would freeze over. If the rate was slow enough, people would “get ready” and “keep the seed of Humanity” going as long as possible, which would be irrelevant long before the Earth got past the present Mars’ orbit.
If you’re thinking of a meteorite altering the orbit of the Earth, it would be so “catastrophic” that it would instantly wipe out Human race on Earth at the same time.
If you’re thinking of a “melting away of all rules of Physics” scenario, then we’ll be finally able to see if atheists were right all along.
Note: The Earth will be swallowed by the growing Sun (and becoming a Red Giant, as a part of its life cycle as a star) and won’t let the Earth “escape” at any rate. We will be united with our life giver – the underrated Sun.

Combine all ingredients in a saucepan and simmer for 8-10 minutes. Pour the mixture into shallow dishes. Flies attack it greedily and soon suffocate.

If you were to pick a "second choice" religion, what would you pick instead of the one you have now?

Posted by suminonA (Member # 8757) on :

For me, there is no “second choice”. I didn’t choose “my religion”, it (still) has to choose me. Let me explain: First of all I rejected (early on) the religion that the society around me tried to impose me (it was “defective” considering what I knew at the time about the Universe). Then, I analysed the Universe around, deeper and deeper, and perfected my personal view of it. From “morality” and “truth” to “my purpose in this world” and “where I come from / where I go”. THEN, the religions that I knew about could or couldn’t “speak true” to me. So if there would be a “first choice” it would be the only choice (There is only ONE TRUTH out there [Wink] ) . Yet, this is an atheist talking so the present result is that no religion (that I know of) has chosen me yet. So while my personal system of beliefs also plays for me the role of “a religion”, it is not one by the classical definition of the term (e.g. it is not “you have to pray” kind of religion).

A.

If you were to pick a "second choice" religion, what (and why) would you pick instead of the one you have now?

Posted by MandyM (Member # 8375) on :

That is a really good question. I am a Christian and I have always been intrigued by the beliefs of Jews and more recently Mormons. I am not sure I would choose to follow either of those though (I like coffee and bacon and I just don't think God cares if I consume either one). I guess I am going to cop out and say I wouldn't be able to choose for the same reason as above. My religion chose me, not the other way around.

If Peter Pumkineater had a wife and couldn't keep her but put her in a pumpkin shell and there he kept her rather well, could he be subject to litigation?

Posted by B34N (Member # 9597) on :

Depends, how small was she? If she fit into a pumpkin shell there are only a couple of possibilities that aren't subject to litigation. One would be and I am not trying to be morbid, just analytical.

Theoretically Peter could be a widower, and if his wife and he loved pumpkin (as his name suggests) then would it not be a sane choice if she chose to be cremated, to have her remains put into a pumpkin shell?

I mean think of the possibilities * hmmmm, creatches head and decides to tell a little story about Peter *:

Peter morned after the passing of his wife until he found the pumpkin shell he the misses had carved so many days before she left this life. The pumpkin was on the edge of decay but still had some life left in it, much like Peter. So as he stared at the shell he came across a great idea in his mournful mind.

In his basement workshop he works diligently to perform the surgery on the pumpkin shell making great care to ensure that the shell would last as long as possible and not return to its path of decay. Finally when completed he takes the shell up to where the remain of his dearest still ly in wait to be put in their final resting place. He puts the ashes in the shell and makes a pact with his love to not let her leave his side again.

Three weeks later carry his wife's new shell with him Peter walks by the handyman store on the corner of Elm and Eugene just after the dusk of night begins to settle in he notices a bright red radio flyer wagon on diplay. And another great idea flashes in his mind, he purchases the flyer and set his bride inside so that his arms are not so tired of always having to carry her with him and so the two make their way back home with his new pumpkin shell buggy.

Having finished a particular piece you'll notice you forgot to put in a bridge section and you'll wonder aloud where it might have hidden itself, forgetting that you were still recording...

Yes, because I looked up paradoxes on Wikipedia in order to try to answer Eduardo's question, but I gave up finding my least favorite. I hate them all! All of them! Stupid cats in boxes and people travelling back in time to either kill their grandfather or impregnate their grandmother (sounds Oedipean, doesn't it?) and evil mathematical things like finite-volumed solids with infinite surface area (or is it the other way around?) and...evil. Just evil. Especially veridical ones.

Accepting that sin exists and that sin is a bad thing and that theft or the taking of someone else's something is sin, why or why not would it be a sin to take an item you found (you may insert the word 'crime' for the word 'sin' if you find the word 'sin' especially hard to deal with)?

Posted by Gwen (Member # 9551) on :

I don't consider theft to be just the taking of someone else's something; I'd define it to include things like the intent of the taker and the claim the someone else has on the something. For instance, someone picking up something that had clearly been abandoned would not be theft any more than taking in an abandoned child would be kidnapping; someone picking up something to take it to the Lost and Found wouldn't count either. Someone picking up something and making an honest effort to return it, then keeping it I wouldn't consider to be theft because the person who lost it was already deprived of their property--as would not be the case if someone left a purse on a seat to go to the restroom, for instance. And the original owner would have to have a legitimate claim on the item in question.

But with the full set of accepted items in your question (or just that the taking of someone else's something is a sin), it would have to be a sin to take an item you found if it were in fact "someone else's something."

What is the air-speed velocity of an unladen swallow?

Posted by Eduardo St. Elmo (Member # 9566) on :

As you might know the original question is actually about the "average air-speed velocity". But since thats's not the question you asked, I will have to answer that it depends on the flight pattern it is following. For example: if the swallow is diving its speed will be higher than when it's flying straight ahead. The same sort of changes occur when it's making a turn. Besides that other factors weigh in on the matter:
* personality: is it a lazy swallow or does it like to fly as fast a possible?
* age: elderly swallows will probably not be able to keep up with the youngsters
* nationality: African or European?

Who's your role model?

I copied that from a script on the internet. You can't believe everything you Google.

Posted by Eduardo St. Elmo (Member # 9566) on :

brojack17: my reaction wasn't meant as a criticism, ya know. I was just trying to answer the question you posed. Anyway, IMO this way it was far easier to think up a realistic, yet kinda funny retort.
Even though I sometimes use internet scripts to verify quotes (mostly Blackadder), I have noticed that not every source is equally reliable. Fortunately with the introduction of DVD's it's possible to scan the original source pretty fast to make sure whether your quote is correct. (if you happen to own the hardware and the software in question, that is [Smile] )
It is always wise to remain a critical observer.
