I just bit into a white peach my dad had brought us. After the third bite, the pit clung to the flesh. Or really, half of it did. The pit split. And inside the other half was a SQUIRMING WHITE MAGGOT!!!

EEEEEW!!!!!

EEEEeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeewwwwww!

I guess you could be like Mal and Zoey and always cut up your fruit before you eat it?

I feel comforted by the fact that it was in the pit.

But I threw the rest-- and the rest of the peaches in that bag-- away!

Gross. I'm sorry.

The only thing worse than finding a maggot in your peach is finding half a maggot in your peach. [Wink]

Posted by Enigmatic (Member # 7785) on :

Could be worse. Instead of finding a maggot in the other half, you could have found the other half of a maggot.

Edit: Beat to the obvious joke! Curses!

I started roasting some cashews the other night.

Halfway through, I looked a bit closer at the pan, and saw a white maggot poking out one of the nuts, wiggling and trying to escape the heat,

*ewwwww*

I hate bugs in food.

Oh, gross! [Angst]

It's things like this that make me hesitate to buy organic produce. Not that yours was organic, kq, but that's what it made me think of.

I once had an earwig jump out of an apple I was cutting. That was pretty shocking.

You need a tequila to go with your worm, amiga.

Posted by Jenny Gardener (Member # 903) on :

You don't have to throw the fruit out! Just can it instead. You can cut away the bad parts and still benefit from the fruity goodness. Or make jam.

All produce gets bugs in it. Stop being so squeamish! As long as you're not finding HALF the worm, you're fine! Even if you DO find half the worm, you're fine. It's dead once you eat it, after all. It's not like swallowing a live intestinal worm.

Consider this. If it was bad fruit the worm wouldn't want it eather. Get over it. The world has too much celophane wrapping as it is now.

its funny that munching on the ovaries of a once live plant doesnt bother anyone but once you see a larval maggot the whole picture changes. Maybe if plants could move around and squirm, maybe make bambi eyes at us we would feel bad about eating them.

Buy a bag of rice, that is weavel free, IT CANT BE DONE!

It's not like we feel SORRY for the maggots...

sounds like something you might see on todays Cartoon Network, man I hate the direction cartoons are making nowadays.

...and it's quite likely that the plant on whose ovaries I happen to be munching is still very much alive.

All produce has bugs in it, actually. Organic has tons more of course, but if you're biting into your broccili does it really matter to you if you only have a few dozen larvae in it or a few hundred?

....

Ok, yeah it does...

Acutally, it was. From the Farmers' Market.

Whoa there, mister! This is a PG-13 forum, so stop it with the dirty talk.

KQ, I think the real question here is: After you bit the peach with the maggot in it, did you get dizzy and have a hallucination of a fancy masquerade ball where you danced with David Bowie?

Would it totally weird you out if I said "yes"?

Posted by Enigmatic (Member # 7785) on :

Not even close, no.

(The part that weirds me out is the old trash lady, with the pile of belongings on her back.)

Actually, sometimes organic produce is cleaner. Depends on the growing conditions and how it's been prepared before you buy it. One year, I had NO cabbage worms on my broccoli because the local wasps ate them all!
