Ok, I set up a football one. I added defensive players this year and changed up the scoring a little to help even it out with the limited number of NFL players and the 20 teams we’ll have. See what you think we can adjust it up until the season starts.

So*………… It’s free. It’s fun. If you’ve never played it’s very easy and you really don’t have to do much if you don’t want to. Basically there is a draft and all the people in the league divide up NFL players onto teams of their own and score points based on their performance. First game is Sept 5th, so there is plenty of time to get in, set up your pre-rankings of your players if you like, have the draft, and do any trading before the season starts.

So* here’s the email Yahoo usually sends out with an invite:

Already?

I'd sign up but I always play in my lil brother's league and playing in 2 leagues leads to conflict of interest. =(

You can only play in one? Huh? I hate that they limit you to 4 since that makes it so I can only do Hatrack, my buddy Steve’s league, a Public league, and one I set up.
Multiples make it fun since if you are doing bad in one hopefully you’re doing good in the other!

Me, I'd prefer to wait a bit, training camps aren't even into full swing yet. But closer to the season opener, I'm game!

Still early, but never to early to get in!

No draft until end of Aug. See what you think of this years changes.

I'm in, as usual. The addition of the defensive players should be an interesting one... [Wink]

Never used fractional points before - should be good to keep me up on adding quarters.

The Choking Paradigm, annual regular season champ or runner up in three of past four years, and also annual playoff disaster has joined up to dominate the regular season again only to gift the title to someone else via choking/and or injuries as per usual [Wink] . One of these years my 13-0/12-1/11-2 record may actually mean something come playoffs but until then, i remain the Choking Paradigm per usual.

It is an off line draft. Getting 20 people around at the same time to do a live one is something I don’t even want to think about. Off line makes it a level playing field for all. Basically all you have to do is set up your pre rankings. If you don’t want to change them you don’t have to. But suppose you’re like me and don’t want TO. You can put him on your do not draft list. Also you can rank other players higher. It’s easy, but don’t feel like you have to do it. You can get into this as much or a little as you like. Fun for all!

Jay, I have a few questions. I am new to FF, and so I went and talked to my BIL who plays in multiple leagues.

He said our scoring was whacked. [Big Grin] He thought it was weird that we had kicking rated so low, and he said that most leagues he played in didn't do specific defensive players. Sometimes they would pick teams defenses...as in an entire defense. He said he thought it would work better.

What types of things did you change compared to the standard league setup? I don't care, really, just wondering how this will work as we have it now.

Will we be able to trade players after the draft? What about picking up players on waivers?

Posted by B34N (Member # 9597) on :

I'm in! Hope I do better at this than the last time I played? I always end up picking the players that get injured.

I think my team nick is pretty obvious LOL

Posted by GaalDornick (Member # 8880) on :

Kwea, you will be able to trade players after the draft and we do have a waiver wire. The way the waiver wire works is after you pick up a player off the waivers, you get number 14 (since we have 14 teams) and then if you any another player both try to pick up a player off the waivers, he gets priority. Then he gets number 14 and you're moved up to 13, etc.

I'm not very excited about the defensive players, I'd prefer a defensive team as a whole. Individual defensive players are hard to rank off stats. I don't think kicking should be rated highly though. How kickers do in again is pretty high on luck, at least moreso than other players.

Posted by GaalDornick (Member # 8880) on :

Ok, now that I took a closer look at the way the scoring is, that is really whacked. What's up with all these fraction of a points? .25 for a reception? The QB has to throw better than 50% for you to gain points on his completion percentage? This is too hard to rank on players. Especially on an auto draft. I'm not sure how competitive I can get in this league when I feel like I have very little control over hwo my team does. Can we change the way the scoring is if other people agree with me? Or start a new league or something?

Posted by GaalDornick (Member # 8880) on :

I'm sorry if I sound like a complainer, I just don't think this sounds like fun to me now. Half the fun of this is the live drafts, which I love, and the other half is managing your team. We're not doing a live draft and managing my team effectively seems almost impossible with all of these complicated rules and scoring systems. I'm in favor of starting a new league and putting in the public league rules and possibly having a live draft if we put it on an easy time, like a weekend day, so most people are available. I love live drafts.

Posted by Kwea (Member # 2199) on :

Even if we don't do a live draft, I think we need to do something about the scoring. I looked at a few other setups, and none of them have defensive players...you either pick a whole defense or none at all....and their scoring is way different as well.

Jay, I hope you don't think I ma ungrateful for you setting this up....I wouldn't have a clue to do it myself....but you DID ask for input in your original post. It seems overly complicated, particularly since I am fairly new at this. [Big Grin]

Posted by Jay (Member # 5786) on :

Ok, I added the defensive players since we have so many people that get in the league. Last year we had 20 and there just aren’t enough offensive players around. So the defensive players add another layer. Last year there were a number of times when you didn’t have a defense to play and nothing out there to pick up. This fixes that big time.
The scoring. I based it off another Yahoo league I’ve been in with another Computer Science guy from my church, which is where I first saw the defensive players in a league. He’s been tweaking it for a number of years and it works pretty good. Looks a little strange, but it balances things out and helps in the long run. Especially in a league with so many people. Let me tell you, this guy is good. He’s even writing his own fantasy football program so he can tweak things even more. Anyway, I know it’s kind of a rough one to say trust me it works, but trust me, it works. I think the points approach it from more of a team angle based on performance then anything.
Trading. Yes, that’s why we should draft early in the last week of August. You’ll have time to put out some trades before the first game of the year.
A live draft would be impossible to set up. Not to mention if you get only half the people there it’s not really fair to the other half that’s not there. Just seems better to have a level playing field for everyone.
Basically it’s set up to be fun for everyone and you can get into it as much or as little as you like.

Posted by GaalDornick (Member # 8880) on :

If we get only 16 teams in the league, we will have enough for every team to have a defense and a backup, since there are 32 teams. And same goes for QB and RBs. Every team can have two starters for the positions that there are only one of.

But I'm still in favor of using the standard scoring system. I don't see how it makes any difference as to how many teams you have. Even if we have alot of teams I don't think the scoring system makes it any easier. I vote that we should use the standard system we used last year. Anyone else?

is there an exact day that the draft will happen I looked and couldn't find out, maybe I am just not seeing it ont he site.

Posted by Goody Scrivener (Member # 6742) on :

Gaal makes a good point about the defense, actually. Is there a reason we need to have a 20-team league? If it can be changed to 16, then we only need one more to close and go back to having full Ds instead of picking players.

I'd be willing to re-join a new team if that's what's involved.

I can't speak to the scoring issues, although I will say that one of my leagues last year used fractional scoring and it got really confusing for me because, for example, a TD in that league was only worth 2 points and my other two leagues that year and in every prior year were worth 6.

Posted by GaalDornick (Member # 8880) on :

Jay, you think you can change it? Make it so we can have defensive teams and cap it off at 16 teams? And maybe make the scoring the way it was last year?

Posted by Carrie (Member # 394) on :

I'll play either way, with or without the fractional points and defensive players.

I've never actually used the individual defensive players before, and I can see the "too many people for offense only" aspect. Then again, part of the fun of having so many players and so few starters (relatively) is finding the diamonds in the rough. [Dont Know] That doesn't really matter.

The fractional points is going to be a pain in the butt for figuring out in real time what the scores are going to be and trying to grab someone for the late Sunday/Monday game. Otherwise, I don't think it'll make that much of a difference.

Posted by Jay (Member # 5786) on :

I still think we’ll get to 20. People tend to get in at the last minute. 16 is still to many really for team defenses. Yes you can have two per team, but even with two you can have a possibility of having two teams with bye weeks. Happened to multiple people last year. Individual players are really kind of fun. I think you all will like it.
Sure scoring is different, but it’s not like you have to do anything with it. It does it for you. Yes, we can still change it, would have been nice to have this all brought up a few weeks ago instead of after grad school started…. I really think the way it’s set up now will make it so it can be competitive and fun for all. Last years was ok, but kind of blah. It was lacking in a number of areas and I think the changes help with the problems we had last year. So I’d really rather not go back to last year’s system.
Don’t be afraid to try something new! This isn’t something I’ve just thrown together, it’s specifically set up for leagues with lots of players and has been tweaked for a few season.

An exact date to set the draft for ready? How about the 27th? A week before the season starts.

Posted by GaalDornick (Member # 8880) on :

"16 is still to many really for team defenses. Yes you can have two per team, but even with two you can have a possibility of having two teams with bye weeks."

And we can always trade Ds to settle that problem, and if worse comes to worse, a team won't have a defense for a week. But chances are that won't even happen. And what about defensive players? If we have a problem with not enough starting offensive players, why will having defensive players fix that?

So far you're the only person who's said that you prefer this system. A few people so far seem to be in favor of switching (Me, Goody, and Kwea, I think). If other people don't start saying that they want defensive players and your scoring system, I think you should change it.

Trading defenses is nice to talk about, but trades are hard to come by. And chances are having two defenses on a bye week will happen. It happened to multiple people last year (as I’ve already said) and this does fix that. Having a greater pool of players total to draft from will help with our league and the greater number of teams we have. It just makes sense to have more players to take from when you have more teams.

I’m willing to talk about scoring but I want to stick with the defensive players. I really think it’ll help and doing nothing just makes it just like last year. Which was ok, but really could have been better with these tweaks. By the way, did you play in last year’s league?

I'm really not understanding the logic of adding defensive players. I don't see how it helps out our offensive players at all and gives us any more depth in offense. Sure, it adds more players, but it adds more positions as well. And I have no idea what defensive players will do good, other than trusting Yahoo's ranking, or when I should draft them.

I don't even know how this new scoring system will affect all of the offensive players and which ones benefit from the new system. I mean, when you have rushing getting a point for every 10 yards and receiving getting one for every 20 yards, considering RBs almost always get more yards than WRs and TEs, WRs will probably do almost nothing in comparison to RBs.

"I’m willing to talk about scoring but I want to stick with the defensive players."

Jay, I appreciate that you made the league for us and that you're the commisioner, and I'm sorry that I'm being a pain in the @#$, but you did name it the Hatrack Fantasy Football League. I'd keep my mouth shut if you said that you were making your own league and were inviting us to it, but since it's the official Hatrack league I think we should see what other team's think. Hopefully other people will start saying if they think we should have whole Ds or individual players and what we should do and if they like the new scoring system.

"By the way, did you play in last year’s league?"

Yeah, I had the same team name but I used a different screen name. I was The Foundation last year also.

Btw whatever happened to Shlomo and the league he sent up, I still owe him a lot of rips for going on and on about a Marlin dynasty after they won a few years back and suggesting I was wrong about the Marlins having no shot at making a dynasty nor at actually even making the playoffs the following year.

Defensive players have never been a part of the hatrack league. I dont particularly care one way or the other beyond not wanting to do the research since im involved in six money leagues anyway.

btw when's the draft date and has anyone decided whether it will be live or an auto draft?

Posted by orlox (Member # 2392) on :

Jay, you might consider two leagues one with defensive players for the keeners (I'm in), one without for more casual players. If the defensive players make it no fun for some people, then those people won't be having fun.

Posted by GaalDornick (Member # 8880) on :

Now that we have 16 teams I think we should just have the draft already. I think 16 is enough. I hope you'll at least change the scoring system back to the standard Yahoo one before we draft.

Posted by Jay (Member # 5786) on :

Well, no, we have said all along that the draft would be the last week in Aug and now have said it would be set on the 27th. This allows for a week before the season starts and allows a few weeks of preseason.

I’m willing to tweak the scoring a little, but don’t think we should go back to just a yahoo standard. What’s wrong with giving it the ol college try?

We still have 4 spots left and people should still feel welcome to join. It’s going to be fine in the end and a ton of fun.

Posted by Silent E (Member # 8840) on :

I'm keeping an open mind about the defense thing in this league. I don't like it, but I didn't like the setup last year either (specifically, twenty teams was way too many - twelve is about right), and yet I won. If this year ends in a similar result, I'll be fine with it.

Posted by TheTick (Member # 2883) on :

Do we have any new players this year? Team D is usually easier for them to manage. I usually tweak the scoring in the leagues I commish to allow QBs to roughly match RBs in production, other than that I like the standard scoring. Willing to try whatever, though.

Posted by GaalDornick (Member # 8880) on :

I like TheTick's idea for scoring. I still think that rushing getting a point for every 10 yards and receiving getting one for every 20 is ridiculous. A top RB can basically score as much as any top two WRs with that. I think rushing should get one for every 15 yards and recieving should get one for every 10. That should balance out the difference. And QBs should be given an advantage so they can be as good as RBs.

Posted by Jay (Member # 5786) on :

So I asked my buddy Steve about his league and some of the scoring rationales, since that was what I based this league on.. Not to mention bugged him about when he would be getting his league up. Anyway, here’s his response:

quote:

I think it's getting better every year, but it's
still not perfect. But it's far more perfect than yahoo's.

So the rb's get a point for every ten yards because they lose .25 for
every carry.

So, if a running back averages 4 yards per carry:

they get (4 * .1) points for the rush, but lose .25 for the carry = +.15

That's hardly overvaluing a running back.

So a normal "good" day for a running back may be 22 rushes for 115
yards. That's:

(115 * .1) + (22 * -.25) = 11.5 - 5.5 = 6

If a receiver catches 6 passes for 100 yards (a good day for a
receiver), then:

(100 * .05) + (6 * .25) = 5 + 1.5 = 6.5

Actually, receivers are a little overvalued in my leauge, and that's a
change I'm going to make.

I can try to explain any other rationales behind my choices if you'd
like. But this is a very good system, and most people who complain
about it simply haven't really examined it. I tried to compensate and
make rb, wr and qb as even as possible. It's not an exact science, but
it's pretty good.

BTW, defensive teams are crap. You can't tweak your players, you are
stuck if you play a good offensive team and you are penalized for
special team and offensive mistakes (for example, a quarterback loses a
fumble and the defense returns it for a touchdown - the OFFENSE then
costs the DEFENSE a td, hence the defense is penalized).

Posted by Jay (Member # 5786) on :

Ok, got those tweaks in. I don’t think I had the negative in for the rush attempts. That could have been a problem.
So….. what do you think now? Looking pretty good?

Posted by Jay (Member # 5786) on :

Thoughts? Ideas? Concerns? Like it? Don’t like it? Any other tweaks we want?

Posted by Jay (Member # 5786) on :

Draft will be set Sunday. Have your prerankings all ready by then. Still a few spots left if you want to get in. Also, any more tweaks we want have to be done before the draft. I hope I haven’t upset anyone with wanting to keep defensive players. I apologize if I have. Just trying to have a better league then last year’s.

Posted by KetchupPrinceConsort (Member # 8047) on :

I don't know if this has been covered or not, but was the playoffs for the top 4 teams last year as well? With the number of teams involved would 6 or 8 be better or is it designed so that the best of the best only make it in?

Posted by GaalDornick (Member # 8880) on :

I think having 8 teams would be good. I don't like having the top 2 teams getting a bye week in the playoffs. I think giving them a better draw is fair enough.

Posted by Jay (Member # 5786) on :

Ok, cool. Set that to 8 team playoff on weeks 14,15,16. You can do weeks 15,16,17 but so many teams sit people that last week.

We good?

Posted by TheTick (Member # 2883) on :

Is it just me, or were the default defensive player rankings severely screwed up?

Posted by Jay (Member # 5786) on :

Seems the defensive rankings went by the “projected rankings” which where they get those from is probably from some yahoo crystal ball they keep in the back room.

Posted by GaalDornick (Member # 8880) on :

Sopwith, I'll deal you Jay Feely or Joe Nedney, if you want either.

Man, my offense is stacked. Jake Delhomme, Chad Johnson, Plaxico Burress, Carnell Williams, Corey Dillon, and Chris Cooley. I have no idea about the defensive players I have, though the projected stats don't look too good for them. That's going to be a headache for me if I want to take the time to figure it out.

And how in the world did LT drop to #6! Wow, that's a steal if I've ever seen one.

Posted by GaalDornick (Member # 8880) on :

Jay, what exactly were you thinking drafting Tiki over LJ and LT? Does your whacky scoring system give some huge benefit to Tiki and other players that you didn't tell us about?

Someday, I'm not going to be at the end of the first round so I can get a decent running back. [Mad]

Which team are you? I got the 15th pick and I'm very happy with Carnell Williams. I think he's a very decent RB and I'm happy I got Corey Dillon and Plaxico Burress with the 47th and 50th picks. I think those two were steals that late.

Carrie,

You should do what I do. One of the reasons I finish among the top 2-3 in the regular season year after year (before my annual choke job in the playoffs, though this past year I lost due to injuries and teams resting players late in the season (lost a starting elite tailback and my starting QB for the title game)is that i stack my prerankings ahead of time. I have 25-30 of my top 40 preranked players as running backs. This insures that year after year I always have two strong running backs, which is nearly impossible in 20 team leagues. I follow that up by filling the next 20-30 slots with WR's so I dont end up with scrubs at WR. There are enough QB's around so that I'll be fine at QB if I have none preranked higher than about 50 or 60 so for the fifth consecutive year I've landed an offense that was stacked across the board.

I also took advantage of crazy issues with IDP's, and used my brothers knowledge (forget the DL, hit DBs hard) to scavenge for players at D and DB (which fill four of the six IDP positions). This insured that in landing Vasher, Roy Williams, Ronde Barber and Adam Archuleta, I managed to get a collection of IDP's 3 of 4 who rank in the top 15 overall among DB's (Barber-2nd, Williams 5th, and Archuleta 15th)and a fourth whose a top 50 ranked IDP.

My Starting Lineup:

QB: Cardinals Passing Game (Warner/Leinart)
Hugely productive last year, hopefully this year.
RB: S. Jackson-looks like a 1400 yard back to me minimum.

RB: W. McGahee/F. Gore-the former is a 1300 yard back, the latter has plenty of upside.

WR: R. Wayne: Could surpass M. Harrison this year.

WR: Roy Williams-Martz Offense probably means either mediocre numbers because Roy will never get it, or off the hook #'s.

WR: D. Mason: He's playing with McNair, he produced huge numbers with the garbage that was Boller et all, so I can only imagine Titans like numbers could be on the horizon, as in 80+ for 1150+, and 6+ TD's.

TE: B. Troupe: My fav sleeper TE this year. Caught 55 balls last year despite being behind at best a fourth option in the offense for 2/3's of the season. Should be better this eyar.

The rest of my bench:
Brad Johnson-Vikings passing attack, nothing special but he produced solid #'s a year ago.

Roddy White-Atlanta's #1 WR, has spent entire offseason training to show that he can be their best WR since whatshisname in the nineties.

Arnaz Battle-Can never stay healthy however when he does, he's a lock for 5 receptions a game.

D. Henderson-Trade of Stallworth makes him #2 WR.

IDP's
Roy Williams-Top 5 ranked DB

Ronde Barber-Top 2 ranked DB

A. Archuleta-Ranked in top 50 overall, and top 15 at DB, but I think he'll produce sick #'s under Greg Williams, will be used to blitz like crazy.

N. Vasher-scored loads of TD's and generated plenty of TO's last year for bears.

my DL IDP's are starters who produce iffy #'s at best, I figure my DB's will more than make up for them.

As for the rest of the teams:

Fellow contenders in my view are Zealots, Foundation, Whipsmart, Civic Mindend and Goody's. Foundation lacks IDP strength, Whipsmart has no proven WR's (though nearly all have upside) Goody's lacks any kind of talent at IDP, Civic Minded has a lot of strength but does have worries at RB (relying on Green and Bush for help is iffy, Packers look awful and Bush wont get enough touches) and QB, lastly Sopwith has tremendous IDP's and LT2 and that might be enough to make the playoffs, Ketchup has great Defense as well and Carson Palmer but is that enough? Lastly Ender has nothing at IDP, and that could kill him, particularly if Rhodes loses out to Addai.

Should be interesting to see what happens, barring major injury I shouldn't have much trouble making the playoffs, and I believe the same for Zealots, Whismart, Goody's, Civic Minded and probably Foundation. The rest? Not sure. Good luck all. Will listen to offers btw.

I look forward to playing you in week 9 when both of us are only missing our starting QBs (and my backup RB but hopefully I won't need him). Battle of the backup QBs.

"Whipsmart has no proven WR's"

*Scratches head* Steve Smith isn't a proven WR?

Can someone explain to me why the computer drafted a guy like Marcus Robinson, who isn't even listed in the top 6 recievers of the Vikings depth chart when there are guys like Samie Paker, Dennis Northcut, Marty Booker, and Reche Caldwell who are all starting recievers? I don't understand.

You picked 2 of the top 5 DBs off the free agency??? And I don't even see how Archuleta got on your team, I don't see him on your drafting results or on the recent transactions. My head is going to asplode if someone doesn't start explaining what's going on. [Wall Bash]

And now I see that Muhsin Muhammad was drafted in the first round and the second reciever overall. I think I'm going to restart my computer and hope that all these things will change when I turn it back on.

You're not imagining things. I preranked Moose. I just have a feeling about him....especially if Lovie gets smart and starts Griese instead of Grossman.

Free Agents. Fun!

Always prerank. There's no chance in hell of competing in this if you rely on yahoo to draft for you with no prerankings. As for those DB's, immediately after the draft, knowing I'd only managed to do prerankings for about 70 players (normally I do about 250, but I am running 10 different teams in money leagues this year and just didn't have the time), I moved straight to the IDP's to see if other people got lazy with that and didn't look into it aggressively or prerank any of it. It looked like that was the case when it came to DB's. I also figured that few people would have rankings around telling them what is actually good in terms of IDP's, I do (I pay for online services in addition to mags, and bull sessions I have with friends on the stuff and online forums), so I was able to sniff out the free agents as a few others were able too.

As to yahoo's idiotic ranking system. Your guess is as good as mine, there appears to be little rhyme or reason to many of the things it does so make sure you never have to rely upon it.

No worries, I'll choke this season like I always do, last year I think I lead in total points over the next best team by an absolute ton going into the playoffs but it didnt matter, my teams always find a way to lose title games.

I figured that there'd be some serious activity in picking offensive players early with a league this large. IDPs, however, might be a place where I could make some early jumps.

Gamble and Lucas are a great pair of DBs, and Ed Reed was a lucky pull for me. Rucker should have a great year with Carolina's massive DTs and Julius Peppers getting so much attention. Morgan is a tackling machine and Will Witherspoon should shine with the Rams.

Is it going to be worth the gamble? No way of telling right now. Tomlinson was a wonderful gift and I'm pretty surprised that I could pick up Drew Brees in what, the 12th round? I'm a little shaky in WRs, but that could turn out okay.

I'm looking forward to see how this all shakes out. And thanks for a very generous trade offer of a kicker to me (you know who you are), but I was able to pick up NE's new one on the waiver wire. Rookie kickers... that's a nervous-making thing.

Good luck to all!

"There's no chance in hell of competing in this if you rely on yahoo to draft for you with no prerankings."

Actually, I won last year after not touching the pre-rankings. What I do, though, is constantly scavenge the free agents throughout the season. There are always a ton of players that come out of nowhere partway through the season, and as soon as I hear about them, I pick them up, even if it's only for a couple of weeks to replace an injured player.

This is the first time I've ever preranked, and it was only the one player cause I really wanted him. Last year I came in 3rd (I think) in the Hatrack league and won my SKEMERs league. Considering I don't know much of anythign to start with, I think i did pretty well... [Smile]

Yeah, my preranking actually worked really well, I got almost every player I was relly looking to get. Probably cause I wasn't going for anyone really hot except for Manning and TO.

It's worth remembering that I lead that league by a country mile in ppg and total points the entire season, the true test of what a good team is in my view (no luck involved, you pick them, they produce over the long haul of a season and you find out how wise you were, as opposed to getting lucky, or not come the playoffs which is a huge determining factor in who actually wins title games especially in leagues that foolishly hold title games in week 17), along with actually winning the damn thing. The problem? In December I lost several key starters due to "resting them for the playoffs situations" and due to injury and that thoroughly reinforced the wisdom of calling my squad "The Choking Paradigm" five months before they actually fullfilled the prophetic gloss in spectacularly awful fashion. Still it was a great performance by your side as well, and a great team and management job it was.

Good point on add/drops, great teams always make full use of the waiver wire, sometimes it doesn't help too much, but every year there are at bare minimum 2-3 stars that can be landed via the waiver wire and usually more.

I'm worried now because it doesn't look like Carnell Williams and Corey Dillon do well under this scoring system. I'm looking at last year's total fantasy points, which I'm assuming is using our current scoring system, and my backs had less total points than guys like Tatum Bell, Domanick Davis, and Mcgahee. Under the projected stats for this year, which I guess is also projecting it under how our scoring system is, Cadillac is under Kevin Jones. Dillon is all the way at the bottom of the first page. What is up with that? Does this system benefit certain kinds of rbs (e.g. runners who get alot of carries even if they have low yards per carry or runners who get few touches but have a high average, etc.)?

Posted by Sopwith, again (Member # 9457) on :

Personally, I'm a lil wonky on this scoring system. I'm willing to give it a try, but do we want, perhaps, an alternate league with standard rules as well?

Just a thought and no slight intended.

Posted by Carrie (Member # 394) on :

Sop, I had also considered the alt-league and would be interested if it gets off the ground.

And, uh, I also mean no offense. It would be interesting to have a head-to-head comparison of the scoring systems, for our own reference and for planning next year. Just another thought. [Smile]

Posted by graywolfe (Member # 3852) on :

we probably should put together a coherent idea of what we want to do next year in july/august so we're not rushed and we can all come up with something all of us are happy with. I was just interested in putting together a balanced team, and letting it go on autopilot while I work my money league teams (i have tons this year). But considering some of us have been playing together since as far back as at least '02 when i started and probably earlier, it's certainly worth coming up with a system we all can say works. I'd all suggest breaking down the league into 15-16 teams, as every year there seems to be 2-4 teams on autopilot.

Give it a chance. I think you’ll be presently surprised.

Posted by GaalDornick (Member # 8880) on :

Jay, the only thing the scoring changes is how well each player does. I think most of us are all used to the standard system and we know how well players do under that system. Changing the scoring means changing which players are better than others, and I'm not not sure how. It's not like new scoring makes it more fun, they get their points and there's nothing we can do about it. New scoring can only confuse us.

I'm going to make a league now that uses standard everything the way the people who use regular leagues are used to it. I think I might throw in a live draft and just check if you think you'd be able to make it and if not you can either import your pre-draft rankings or let it run by itself, or not even join if you don't want to be in two leagues. No pressure, this will just be kind of the unofficial league and we can decide next year which one we like more. I'll start a new thread when it's done.

Posted by GaalDornick (Member # 8880) on :

Darn, I just realized it's too late to have a live draft. Ok forget that idea. Jay, I hope you change our scoring system back to regular before the season starts.

Posted by orlox (Member # 2392) on :

Orediggers, Solar Hawks, Soaps team, Goodie Scrivners, lowndes, Brillo Bombers, and Zealots all have serious problems with their defences. Even launchies and Paradigm may have some problems. (Apologies for any name/capitalization errors)

I understand Jay's thinking about all this and don't mind myself. But a good commissioner has to facilitate the league he has, and this league doesn't seem ready for IDP defences.

My offence is pretty good. I got Alexander and Dunn at RB, Gates at TE, Culpepper at QB, and three medium level WR's. No big names there at WR, or on defense.

Got a good kicker...too bad the points system rapes kickers though. [Frown]

I have Benson at RB, from Chicago, so if he ends up healthy that could be a plus as well, and I picked up several NE WR's in case Branch keeps whining.

WOW. I suck.

S. Alexander sucks too! He COST me .65 points, and that was against Detroit. WIthout him I am humped.

Two of my defensive players didn't even play. [Frown]

L. Coles had a monster day though, as did Dunn. [Big Grin] Bruce did well too.

Alexander really hurt me though. [Frown] My KICKER got more points than he did!

Hell, the benched players all did, for that matter. [Wink]

I'm going to escape this week. I'm stupid, I totally forgot I was going to bench Favre against the Chicago D. I find it hilarious that Jeff Wilkins was my highest scoring player. I'd like to see more from LJ but I can't fault Reggie Bush, I feel better seeing him getting all those touches.

I just giggled at people predicting I'd lose in week one [Wink] . Yeah, a little self-agrandizing perhaps, but I usually save my losses for one in midseason, one in the end of the season and a colossal choke job in the playoff. I worked my opponent [Big Grin] , nearly doubling them up in total points.

Man, I can't believe Delhomme, Chad Johnson, Carnell Williams, and Corey Dillon combined for about 12 points. That's ridiculous. I'm so pissed, I so should've won that game, and would've if I would've started Byron Leftwich instead of Delhomme.

Delhomme is going to lose his starting job to Leftwich if he doesn't start performing when Smith gets back. Leftwich has more than triple Delhomme's points.

Too bad only two of them showed up this season. And NOT the two the "experts" were predicting.

I was going to play Rivers at QB since Culpepper is not doing well at all, but this would be his bye week. [Frown]

I am 2-0, and that is without half my team scoring points. Or at least not scoring even half as well as they are suppose to...

And with Culpepper as QB.

Posted by graywolfe (Member # 3852) on :

Very lucky this week, got crazy busy thursday-friday and forgot to set my lineup or replace bye week issues with three or four guys and still squeaked out a win. That was a real close call.

Weird sunday games, still annoyed noone in the media is talking about my redskins, they loved piling on when we clearly sucked in weeks 1 and 2, but come up with a win against a team thought to be the best in the league a week ago, and nada in the media. Quite annoying.

I'm kind of suprised that Whipsmarts accepted the offer. He said he wanted to trade S. Smith and I offered Chad Johnson just to get some talking going because I was interested in Smith (having Delhomme and all) and then he accepted. I guess with the injury you could say Chad Johnson may have a better season, but I like Smith. Who did you all think the trade benefited more? It was a 1-for-1 same position trade so all that will matter is who scores more points by the end of the season.

Posted by orlox (Member # 2392) on :

I figured they were about equal but Chad already had his bye while Steve's is week 9. So that puts you a whole game's worth of scoring behind.

Also, Chad is due for a good game and I may well trade him again.

I'm still looking for that blockbuster trade. I am stunned that no one seems seriously interested in Westbrook who is scoring double most rbs.

The scoring system seems to benefit yards more than touchdowns for RBs. I think that's decent. I wish I would've figured that out before the draft though.

This weeks was crazy though. Soo many high scoring players. Almost 25 players broke 10 points (which is kind of alot for this league).

Well my predictions were that I'd be dominant, and that Whipsmart, Goodys, Civic Minded, Zealots, and Foundation would also have great seasons.

So how does it look halfway through the season?

me: 7-0 and on my way to another great win. Just trying to figure out how I'll choke my way to a loss this year.

Whipsmart: 6-1 and on their way to 7-1

Zealots: 1-6 and on their way to 1-7, ouch, I was wrong about them, wonder why?

Goodies: 1-6 and possibly a winner this week considering they're 3 behind and have C. Taylor going. Dead wrong about this squad for now.

Foundation: 6-1 and on their way to 7-1, I was right about them.

Civic Minded 4-2, and after this week probably 2nd in points overall after leading going into this week. Darn fine team as expected.

Last team I was dead wrong about: Launchies, I just didn't see that coming at all. Definitely didn't and they are way better than I expected.

Will be interesting to see who wins it all. Will I fail, for the fourth consecutive year, to bring home a title despite having one of the two or three best teams in the league? Probably. Who will win it all? Some underdog out there. Maybe Civic, with his point producing factory that's been a bit unlucky, maybe someone else, maybe launchies who I never even mentioned, or maybe even one of the teams that nobody notices right now. It should be interesting. Good luck to all.

Lets not forget my team....Brillo's Bombers didn't even get a mention in either post. If Alexander had scored any points at all before getting hurt, and at the beginning of the season who thought he wouldn't have, I would have been a lot better off then I am.

I have had two weeks where I had at least 4 players on a bye week at a time, so most of my squad will be playing for the rest of the season, and Alexander should be back next week. Gates is finally hitting on all cylinders, and Coles is having a great year, as is Dunn.

I really upgraded my defense, as it was the weakest part of my team. Not a whole lot of anything special, but some good players with some good numbers.

And now I have a computer connection again, which means I can monitor my team again on a regular basis, something I haven't been able to do for a month now. [Big Grin]

I hate Carnell Williams. That aside, my team played excellent the past few weeks with the exception of this week.

The weird thing is, 3 weeks ago I think I was #4. I've won every game since, putting up alot of points (with the exception of this week, again) and yet it still looks like I'm going to drop down a spot below Civic [Roll Eyes] [Wink] .

And if this teams were real, I think I'd have the best passing game in the league. My receivers are all great and all are good at different things. Smith being the deep threat and go-to-guy. Plaxico Burress is the big, tall, jump-ball receiver, and Houshmandzadeh is just a great all-around receiver and the red-zone target. And Cooley is a very good TE. Who here has a better receiving core if it were real life?

Shaun Alexander is killing me to Kwea. My brother and I run 3 money teams together along with the multiple money teams we run apart and we had one team land the first pick overall. We tried like made to trade down to #2 or #3 overall but no one would bite. We never, ever wanted that #1 overall because we couldn't decide between Johnson, LT2, and Alexander. In the end we decided to look at worst case scenario's. LJ loses Saunders and at least one and maybe two superb linemen, LT2 has had awful stretch runs for the two or three years running (for him), and also had a rookie QB. Shaun lost his All Pro Guard Hutch. Who to take? We agonized for a week and then felt that Alexander had the least downsize. Since becoming a starter he'd been a top 5 or so back every season, and didn't have a rookie QB, or the problems LJ had to overcome. So we went with Alexander. And boom, our season went instantly into the crapper. The last nail in the coffin was seeing every one of the elite pass catchers go before our 2/3 turn pick (Harrison, Johnson, S. Smith, T. Owens, R. Moss, and Gates all off the board) and so we took C. Chambers and Kevin Jones at the turn. Every last second and third tier WR was gone at the 4/5 turn so we grabbed Carson Palmer and plugged our nose while taking Joe Horn.

Season over.

Very depressing. Last night I practically jumped off a bridge when the vikes couldn't get a single FG and extra point, 2 field goals, or anything from their kicker and offense. I was trailing in my last money league I had a player going in 123-119. All I needed was two field goals from longwell, or an extra point and a field goal to win. I got neither and lost. Uggh. Nothing more aggravating then this game. Why oh why did i have to be playing bears defense, ravens defense and desmond clark with nearly every one of my teams this week?

The most painful thing? Perhaps the fact that last week after losing to a guy named Blue Star 140-114, my brother plays the same guy and wins 89-68.

Fantasy football really is 50% skills and smart, and 50% colossal luck.

Good luck to all, trust me, my team will find a way to choke this year like I do every year, someone will surprise with a win this year. Just not sure who.

I have Gates AND Alexander, and only scored about 40 points this week. I sat Troy Brown and Rodney Harrison, and that cost me the game, as Coles had a bad game and so did Rolle.

I'm really suprised I won. I didn't have Steve Smith, my best player, Plaxico, Delhomme, though Garrard stepped it up, and Carnell only scored a point and a quarter. And my two backup WRs combined for exactly one point. Meanwhile, his WRs went off on me and Jackson had a sick game. I don't know how I won, but I'm glad I did. [Big Grin]

11 points....from my KICKER? And not Rackers, but Stover, who I had only picked up to cover Rackers bye week?

LOL

6 of the top 7 teams are playing each other. Should be a crazy week.

I am in a close race this week. It should have been a bowout, but RIvers had a horrible day. He gave away a touchdown for me by letting his RB throw it!

He was negitive .63 for me.

And my backup, who I didn't play (Harrington), scored over 11 pts!

I am less than 3 pts down, with 2 players playing tonight....and if Alexander has a good game, I could still win.

We each have 2 players playing tonight, so this should be fun! [Smile]

Well, in this wonderful scoring system we have, I think Alexander got 10 points...for 201 yards rushing.

Woodson got 2 int, and between him and Alexander have a great night I think I squeeked out a win tonight.

Next week should be tough as well, with Soap and I playing almost dead even....and have identical records going into the last game of our season, before playoffs.

[Big Grin]

Well, I am winning....for now. Too bad Soap has half of Carolina on his team. [Smile] 5 of his players play tonight, and he should be able to to get at least another 20 points from them and beat me.

I have a question....since it looks like Solar Hawks won already, that places my team ans Solar Hawks in a 2 way tie for the last playoff spot at 7-6. However, I beat them in the regular season, I think the very first week.

Who gets the last playoff spot?

I, of course, think it should be me. [Smile] [Wink]

This is bullshit.

Solar Hawks has the same record that I do...and I beat them the first week, so I win a tiebreak, right?

Wrong.

Jay, this league sucked from day one. I told you it would, and you blew everyones objections off and patted us on the head and said it would be fine.

It sucks, and this just proves it. -2.50 from a kicker? 10 points for a 200+ running game?

Next time I will set up a league, with standard rules. I will probably still suck at it, but at least I won't use some BS format my friends uses, and no one else knows about.

Well as predicted, it looks like I'm gonna choke. Despite steam rolling everyone left and right, I've now puked up a pair of losses in the last three or four games and am ready to collapse in the playoffs as per always. God it's frustrating, first place the entire year essentially than flush it the last week of the season. Lovely. Even worse of my 9 money league teams, 5 missed the playoffs, and four of the five missed them by finishing one slot out of contention. Why in the heck did I trade FWP in every league I owned him in as a keeper? What colossal stupidity [Frown] . At least I built the majority of my keeper teams for big runs in '07 and '08. That i can hang my hat on.

It is rare to find someone so committed to predestination these days. No point in even dressing a team for the playoffs then, I accept your concession with deep ironic humility.

I didn't like the scoring system either. I guess next year we'll have a new commissioner?

But at just happy that I'm in the playoffs though [Big Grin] .

Btw, ok graywolfe, you want to haer a true choking story?

Last year I did a Fantasy Basketball league with 12 friends and a $10 buy in. 2nd place gets money back, 1st place takes the rest. I finished the league as the 1st seed. I go to the semifinals, the last game which I have to win to be guarenteed at least my money back and I start crushing the other team. He slowly makes a comeback and ends up beating my by 1 freaking assist! In baketball it goes by categories and he only beat me in 1 extra category and he had 1 more assist then me and 2 more steals. So if my team would've gotten two extra assists throughout the entire week I would've won. I went through a whole year dominating and then lost the only game that mattered by 1 assist. And I would've won the finals game too. $110 lost on 1 freaking assist!!

The scoring system literally caused me to stop paying attention to this league [Frown] no offense.

Posted by Kwea (Member # 2199) on :

It's all good. Next year will be better.

And the scoring system will be standard. I may keep the individual defensive players, as that was fun, but the rest will be a standard setting league.

Jay, thanks for trying. I know you meant well, and I am glad you convinced me to play, but it just didn't work well. As we thought in the beginning.

The lesson, apparently not learned, is that a good commish makes the league that suits the members and not according to their own personal likes or dislikes. There is absolutely no reason that the scoring system and team or IDP defense should not be put to a vote of the members.

Man, Launchies RBs are eating me for breakfast. 131 yards and a TD on 9 carries? And 171 yards on 33 carries? From Ladell Betts and Fred Taylor? Are you kidding me?? [Wall Bash]

So where is this choke I keep hearing about? If I beat you in the championship does that mean that you choked? [Wink]

Incidentally, I felt not so much steam rolled in week 6 as defenceless. Specifically my Ravens/Bears defence was on vacation. I believe it was my only loss. [Blushing]

How about starting Grossman and Clark off waivers for a playoff game? [Cool]

I might as well boast now because I have NO IDEA who to start this week. Certainly not Rex with the Bears all clinched up...

It's coming tomorrow night. This is my fifth year of playing and I've had a top seed twice, and a top 2 seed 3 times, and made the playoffs all five years. Always choked every single year. Like clockwork. I anticipate it happening again. I'm a glass is half empty kind of guy when it comes to this stuff.

Posted by orlox (Member # 2392) on :

Congratulations! You are going to have to find a new name now. And after suffering so much disappointment, I am glad it was you to beat me. Notice that I didn't claim to have choked as that would just cheapen your victory.

And thanks to everyone for a good year and to Jay for all his efforts.

I will say that yahoo sucks however. On ESPN free leagues can continue from year to year keeping their history. It would be nice to have that sort of stability to the league. Also, scores come up right after the game, no waiting till the next day. And no major screwups like being able to start Colston as a TE.

We could consider it next year. As long as no one else objects I will volunteer to admin this next year. I would suggest keeping the IDP, but using a conventional scoring system.

I wasn't sure about drafting individual defensive players, but I found I liked it a lot. [Smile]

The scoring still sucked though, as did the system on who made the playoffs. If someone (not just me, but anyone) ties with a player they had beat head-to-head, the player who won that week should advance.

Plain and simple.

Congrats to The Choking Paradigm, Whipsmarts, and Sopwith's Snipes for their victories. And thanks for letting me join you in this league. I had a lot of fun playing with everybody. [Big Grin]

I had three (or four) of the top defenders (at least in interceptions...Woodson, Samuel, Asomugha, and I think I had Mathis as well), plus Alexander, Gates, Rivers, Coles, Bruce, and Rackers AND Stover....and I didn't even make the playoffs. [Frown]

I also let Driver go, because I though Favre was done.

Very, very weird system.

Of course, Alexander sucked as well....to think, I could have taken LT. Or anyone other than Alexander, really. [Smile]

Posted by Kwea (Member # 2199) on :

Figures...Alexander had 140 yards and 2 TD this week. [Smile]

Posted by graywolfe (Member # 3852) on :

Figures, the year I finally don't choke, is the year everyone wanted to choke the life out of the point scoring system [Wink] . Congrats on a great season everybody and hopefully lets create a bit of a smoother system next year. I like the idea of IDP's, just think the scoring system should be fixed.

Congrats on the season. I'm mighty surprised to get third place.

I agree with keeping IDPs, but I would like to go back to the standard scoring system.

On a note of the fairness of the scoring system: while it was weird, it did apply evenly to all teams. However, I believe something that convoluted lends itself to exploitation over the long haul.
The simplicity of the standard system makes a more level playing field for both the experienced and the neophyte. Some of us just aren't stats people.

I agree, completely.
