Hi!

I know there are several DC area Hatrackers here. I've been busy every weekend and most week nights with one thing or another (I admit that the activity is sometimes "going to sleep at seven o'clock") since I got here, but I'm feeling rested, caught up, and ready to play now. Matt is still gone - he's in Utah for three weeks. He is also planning on seeing A Prairie Home Companion with his family while he's there, so I was thinking - does anyone in D.C. area want to see it on Saturday? It seems like a perfect Hatrack-y thing to do. What do you think?

*grumps*

I wanna see that movie. And I wanna see Katie. Dratted distance between L.A. and D.C.!

*grumps*

I totally thought you meant going to see a taping of the radio show, as they sometimes do it on the road. And was surprised it wasn't sold out this close.

Posted by ketchupqueen (Member # 6877) on :

I went to the show at the Greek Theater for my 19th birthday present. It was the fulfillment of a practically lifelong dream. [Big Grin]

Posted by ElJay (Member # 6358) on :

The Fitzgerald theater is maybe 6 blocks from where I'm sitting now, and I'm a member of MPR, so I get priority on purchasing tickets. But I've never gone. Someday I'll get around to it.

Posted by ketchupqueen (Member # 6877) on :

Um...

Can I come visit you? [Big Grin]

Posted by MissAmandaJones (Member # 9460) on :

Hubby and I got to see them tape the radio show out at Wolf Trap a couple weeks ago. It was so cool! I can't wait to see the movie! I'd go with you Saturday but my Mom is having surgery and so won't be able to watch the baby! Enjoy it for me!

Posted by Miro (Member # 1178) on :

Dang. I'd love go but I'm leaving Saturday morning.

Posted by Uprooted (Member # 8353) on :

Pouting, because I was there about a month ago and would have taken you up on it!

Posted by Dagonee (Member # 5818) on :

I can't go - my one outing for the weekend is planned already. [Frown]

Posted by KarlEd (Member # 571) on :

Dangit! I'll be at Dutch Wonderland with a whole passel o' young'uns.

Posted by Dagonee (Member # 5818) on :

That sentence tickles me, Karl.

Posted by Kasie H (Member # 2120) on :

Aaah!

I'm going with my mom and little sister to see Cars in Georgetown. They voted for Prarie Home Companion...I voted not against it, but rather in favor of the Pixar flick [Smile]

Otherwise, absolutely yes.

Pssst - Lunch next week?

Posted by katharina (Member # 827) on :

Kasie: Lunch next week will be perfect. [Smile] I'll even be downtown by then - where do you work?

I figured it was a stretch - it's very last second. Maybe we could turn this thread into a planned get together? What about a couple of weeks from now? I'll be out of town the weekend of July 7, but besides that, there's nothing particular planned in the next month or so. What do y'all think? [Smile]

Posted by ladyday (Member # 1069) on :

I'm game any weekend save the 7th. So that works out well!

Posted by Evie3217 (Member # 5426) on :

NO! I'm with Ornico, if it had been about a month ago, I totally would have been able/willing to go. Now, however, I'm home in Boston and won't be able to see you. I think we should plan something for September so that I can hang out with all you cool kids.

Posted by ambyr (Member # 7616) on :

Hmm, sounds like fun. I'm free the weekend after this, and the last three weekends of July.

Posted by KarlEd (Member # 571) on :

Later July is good for me as far as I know right now. That is, if I don't end up scotch-taped into a shallow grave in my basement before then. [Wink]

Posted by Sharpie (Member # 482) on :

I'm DC area, and John Van Pelt is honorary-soon-to-be-officially DC area. July sounds good to me, too.

Karl, just be extra cautious -- especially if there is a lot of giggling and whispering!

Posted by Risuena (Member # 2924) on :

I'm amazed at how many people are in the DC area now. But I'll stay out of the discussion for now, since I won't be back until August.

Posted by Kasie H (Member # 2120) on :

I'm free pretty much whenever except the 7th and the 14th (weekends) of July. I work on Sunday all day so I can't do it then, but Fridays & Saturdays are perfect.

Katie, I'll e-mail you w/ my work address etc. I get into the office at 2:30 p.m. so if you have an hour lunch or something we could meet at 1 and then I can head to work.

Posted by katharina (Member # 827) on :

Oh, y'all are going to kill me - I feel like I'm being very flaky. July 1 we will be out of town, and July 8 I will be out of town. It looks like the only possibility would be June 24, but it looks like

This Saturday would be too soon anyway, but it's also Matt's Saturday Night Discussion Group where they bring in speakers and everyone talks about Mormony things, usually about the various dialectics between the church, Mormons, and the rest of America (politics, art (that was Matt's), hip hop, the middle east). It's open to public, so people are welcome to come, but it means Saturday is full already and that's not necessarily an activity everyone would enjoy.

The only possibility could be June 24, which seems both very soon and possibly has something scheduled in it. But it's the best day before August.

I have an idea.

My proposal is either June 24, or, and this has the advantage of giving more time to plan but the disadvantage of being far away [Frown] , August 19 or 26. What do y'all think? I have to admit that at this frazzled moment, when I realized that there are seven weeks before the wedding and my bridal shop said it would take six weeks to get more fabric in so my dress currently has neither shoulders nor sleeves and this presents a dillemma, I would kind of prefer August. But that's far away. I've been in D.C. for two months already and haven't seen anyone, especially since Kasie and I missed each other for lunch today after some confusion about the day. [Frown]

Alternatively, I have to admit that June 24 grows in possibility and estimation if someone would like that plan it...? *hopeful smile* What do y'all think?

August is a definite maybe for me, but 6/24 is a definite no.

Posted by Kasie H (Member # 2120) on :

I can do the evening of 6/23. Or I could do an impromptu gathering this Friday evening.

Posted by Dagonee (Member # 5818) on :

August is much more likely than June or July.

And rivka-presence adds to that greatly.

Posted by katharina (Member # 827) on :

Okay, how about August 20? [Smile] It sounds like it would work better for everyone, and yay! rivka can possibly come!! [Smile] That tips it, I think.

Hm....so, what should we do? There's a zillion possibilities around here, most of which I'm sure I don't know yet.

Posted by rivka (Member # 4859) on :

Ok, we can upgrade from "strong possibility" to "extreme probability" -- my ex has agreed to take the kids that weekend, and my boss has ok'd me taking the 21st off.

Looks like American has flights from LAX in that direction at about midnight Saturday. Do I want to arrive at DCA, IAD, or BWI? (That is, which is likely to get me close to a relatively cheap motel and/or wherever we're meeting up?)

Posted by Sharpie (Member # 482) on :

August 20 sounds doable here, too. [Smile]

Posted by ketchupqueen (Member # 6877) on :

*throws a two-year-old-type tantrum*

Posted by Risuena (Member # 2924) on :

August 20 would be perfect for me.

rivka - I don't know about hotels so much, but I'd think that DCA would probably be the most convenient since it's just across the river from DC and has metro access. BWI is a thirty minute drive from DC (assuming no traffic); I think Dulles is about the same.

If you do wind up flying into BWI and need transportation, I can probably help with that since I'll be living not too far from there.

Posted by rivka (Member # 4859) on :

That was exactly the kind on information I needed, Risuena. Thanks! [Smile]

*goes off to book ticket*

Posted by rivka (Member # 4859) on :

Hrm. Looks like flying into Dulles means I could do a non-stop, and it would be cheaper. Are there public transportation options?

Posted by Risuena (Member # 2924) on :

There's a shuttle to one of the Falls Church metro stops on the Orange line. The Dulles website and Washington Metro site have more details about it.

Posted by rivka (Member # 4859) on :

If I'm interpreting this correctly, it's doable but something of a pain?

But it seems to be far the best option in terms of both flight times and prices. (At least, for those that fit my particular needs, like wanting nonstops and needing to leave LAX after 11 pm Saturday.)

(Reservation is on hold for 24 hours, pending any other comments/suggestions from locals.)

Dulles is fine - it used to be the main airport. The main disadvantage is that there is no metro access, but we can work something out. Matt's even flown in and out of Baltimore before to get a cheaper flight. [Smile]

Posted by Dagonee (Member # 5818) on :

The West Falls Church Metro is 1/4 mile from my house. The shuttles are pretty good and pretty fast.

Dulles is far better than BWI. National is a bit better than Dulles, assuming we meet near DC or inside the beltway Virginia. It has its own Metro stop.

But Dulles works just fine.

Posted by rivka (Member # 4859) on :

Excellent. I am going to confirm the ticket right now. [Smile]

Anyone want to recommend a motel? Or tell me what area we're meeting up, so I can look for something nearby?

(Although that's not nearly as urgent as tickets. I imagine it will make little difference either for availability or price as long as I reserve a room before the end of July.)

Posted by Kasie H (Member # 2120) on :

Ooh, this is exciting!

As far as hotels/motels go...I would keep checking Travelzoo's Washington, D.C. section if you want to stay downtown. Downtown is probably ideal because it's close to public transportation, that way you'd only have to get back and forth to the airport area once.

But the cheap motels will all be out near the airport. It's just that without a car there's no good way to get back and forth besides Metro-Airport Shuttle-Hotel Shuttle. Blech.

Posted by Kasie H (Member # 2120) on :

For example, this deal has $99/night on Capitol Hill. Not sure what your price range is, but this is pretty good for in the city. If you're looking at the $60-$80 range, the airport motels are probably your best option....but even they'll be hard to find.

Posted by Kasie H (Member # 2120) on :

There's also this one; I've actually stayed at the Omni and it's *really* nice. Nightlife in the area is better than the Hill, too.

Posted by rivka (Member # 4859) on :

Thanks, Kasie. Those both look great.

I don't know where I want to stay. Because [heavy hint] I don't know where we're meeting up. [/heavy hint]

Would some of the locals like to make some suggestions? Would it help if I linked to the several kosher restaurants in the area?

Posted by Evie3217 (Member # 5426) on :

I come to DC that day, so I might or might not be able to make it, but I certainly want to see you all. What time on the 20th?

Posted by rivka (Member # 4859) on :

That is an excellent question to which I do not know the answer.

*cough*

A discussion of some of the kosher restaurants in the area.

Posted by Fishtail (Member # 3900) on :

Hmm. I'll be in the DC area by 20 August. I know an awesome kosher deli in MD, too.

Posted by Kasie H (Member # 2120) on :

Well, I live down the block from the Jewish Community Center. There's tons of stuff to do around that area, in particular a 24-hour bookstore/cafe/bar a few blocks from my apartment...it's called Kramerbooks and Afterwords and it's my very favorite place in the whole city.

Seems right up Hatrack's alley, too.

I put forward Dupont Circle as a possiblity for meetup location...

Posted by rivka (Member # 4859) on :

Sounds good to me. [Smile] I don't know anyone else's plans, but I'll need to eat both lunch and supper that day. [Wink] Perhaps the JCC Cafe for lunch and Eli's for dinner? (Or the reverse, although the JCC Cafe seems to only be open to 8 pm, and Eli's is open until 9.)

Although, both are meat restaurants. Then again, none of the other kosher restaurants in the DC area are that close. No idea how easy/difficult it is to get anywhere on the Metro, and no idea what sorts of schedules other people will be on. [Dont Know]

There is also a kosher Krispy Kreme nearby (I think), but they don't see to have actual, y'know, food. [Wink]

I vote Spy Museum.

I'm willing to eat anywhere, I guess. Kosher deli's are a bit of a tease for me, since so much of my favorite deli meat is pig-based, but I can deal. [Smile]

None of these restaurants serve solely deli. I believe both have menus on their sites, which I linked above.

You could always have a salad. [Wink]

I'm up for anything and any time on the 20th. I'm kinda silent on the thread because I'm incredibly busy this month and can hardly think past July 15th at the moment.

Count me in for anything, though. (Chris too)

I'm game for the 20th and second the vote for Dupont as a meeting place (you mean the Dupont Circle metro stop, right?)

I like everything, spy museum sounds good to me. Kosher deli ought to work too.

It's pretty easy to hop on the metro an' get around, it can just involve a lot of walking too. Comfortable shoes are the win.

Somehow I got torn away from replying to this thread the first time it was up. I've been wanting to meet Dagonee ever since I moved out here.

Rivka, did you pick an Airport? Because we are very close to BWI and I could offer you shelter as you were hinting about earlier. Depending on your travel schedule, I could offer it regardless, but it sounded like you were being leaned toward Dulles anyway.

I'm going to be coming into Dulles. Actually, the person who will most need a place to stay is Diana (who has posted on Hatrack, but not for months and months). She's driving from North Carolina on Saturday, and will need a place to stay Saturday night.

She is SUPPOSED to post in this thread and ask . . . *glare* . . . but she hasn't gotten around to that yet. [Wink]

Kasie
KarlEd & Chris
Rivka
Risuena
katharina
Dagonee and Eve
Billie (ladyday)
Sharpie
Evie3217
Fishtail
Noah (CalvinMaker)
pooka

Is that right? Have I missed anyone? Inadvertantly included anyone?

Okay, now, what do y'all want to do?

Spy Museum
....

I think we need to discuss activities. [Smile] I'm still new here - I'm not sure of what to do beside the standard. Kasie and I ate at the Museum of the American Indian for lunch one day, which has great native american food. It was also kind of pricey, which should be considered. What else do y'all have in mind?

I'm up for anything. Chris and I are hooking up with friends on Friday and staying with them in Bethesda. We'll be available on Saturday and Sunday until late afternoon/early evening.

We definitely want to meet everyone, but please don't tailor Sunday around us. We'll just hook up with you and cut out when we have to.

Did anyone want to hook up for lunch or dinner on Saturday? Or so something that afternoon?

Karl and Dag, I was wondering. Do one of y'all want to sort of be in charge of the planning? I feel like I don't really know the area, so I can't reccomend things.

Also...not to be put in a bid for sympathy, but it makes me sad to plan an event right now. [Frown] I definitely want to come, but it's kind of different for me than I had thought it was going to be, and it's sort of bumming me out. I don't want to do a disservice to people who are coming, and I'm afraid that since it's making me sad I won't want to devote as much attention as I should. Does that make sense? Is that okay?

Posted by rivka (Member # 4859) on :

*hug* It makes a lot of sense.

Maybe now that Dags and Eve are done with the bar . . . I mean, I'm sure it's not like they're busy or anything. [Wink]

I actually might be able to go to this, if its feasible to combine it with a visit to George Mason University to talk to their economics and public policy program people. (((Katie)))
I'm sorry planning this is making you sad. I think I can understand why, though.

That said, I feel woefully inadequate to plan this one. I'm two hours away and I my Sunday plans are still pretty sketchy. I do know parts of Dupont Circle, but the parts I know best are all gay clubs, bars and restaurants. (And the gay bookstore).

Maybe we can brainstorm this over the next couple of weeks and let it sort of "self-plan". Maybe if everyone posts to answer the following questions:

1. Do you want to hook up on Saturday, Sunday, or both? (Sunday is definite since rivka is coming that day. If there are people who can't make it Sunday, though, I'll be in the area Saturday, too.)

2. What time do you want to meet up? (Please give the best time for you on the day(s) you want to get together).

3. What do you want to do?

4. Where do you want to meet? (I know Dupont Circle has been mentioned, but that could be changed depending on what we are going to do. I imagine it won't be easy to move a large group across the city what with parking being the pain that it is.) On that note, maybe you should include whether you are driving, walking, or taking the metro.

*************

As for me:

1. Chris and I will be in Bethesda Friday and staying with a friend that night. We'll probably do brunch with him on Saturday morning. After that we're free on Saturday. Sunday we can meet up with folks, but we have to leave around 5 or 6 so we can get home.

2. We can meet up probably around noon on Saturday and any time on Sunday.

3. We're game for anything. There is nothing we have to do, but also nothing we won't do. [Wink] We're good for museums, food, parks, zoo, shopping, etc. My primary desire is to meet you guys and get to know you a little better.

4. We'll be driving, so we can meet anywhere.

So, let's everyone give some input.

I can do Saturday and Sunday. Noonish on Saturday works for me. For Sunday I could be there as early as 10 AM.

The spy museum sounds fun to me for Sunday. For Saturday something out of doors would be nice - the arboretum or the zoo would be lovely (I'm leaning toward arboretum myself [Big Grin] ).

As far as food, I have no special needs other than a desire to have some idea of if/where we're eating beforehand. Once we decide what we're doing saturday I can poke around for restuarants and see about getting recommendations. For Sunday I would say let's pick whatever is closest on Rivka's list?

I can drive to some locations (the arboretum seems easy enough to get to, for example) but will take the metro most places downtown. I don't mind walking in the least, though, so at worst it will just take me a little longer to get places [Smile] .

1. I can only do Sunday, but I want to hear stories from Saturday. [Smile]

2. Anytime after 11 or so should work, I think.

3. Surprise me! [Big Grin] All the suggestions that have been made so far were great.

4. I dunno. Somewhere I can get to easily?

Now that I'm settled back in Maryland... *looks down at all the stuff I still need to haul up the stairs to my room* Ok, make that more or less settled...

For all four of Karl's questions, I'm pretty much up for anything, anywhere, anytime... I can meet anytime either Saturday or Sunday or both and I'll probably drive into DC, so I can meet pretty much anywhere I have a chance of finding parking.

As to things to do, the Spy Museum is fun and I'd love to see the American Indian museum, but I'm willing to do anything. It's also always fun to wander around places like Dupont and Adam's Morgan. I would, however, like to request that we not go to Air & Space - due to an excessive number of pilots and aerospace engineers in my family, that was an all too frequent destination when I was a kid.

No, because I figured I should stay somewhere convenient.

I just haven't figured out if that means convenient to the airport, to where we're meeting up, or what. [Wink]

This place looks good, (internet access, fridge/micro) but I don't know where it is relative to the places that have been discussed. Or to the airport.

Posted by KarlEd (Member # 571) on :

Capitol Hill is short-to-long walking from the Mall, depending on where on the Mall you're going. (It's behind the Capitol, which is on one extreme end of the Mall.) It's a short cab ride, or metro to Dupont Circle. (DC's metro is clean and safe.)

I'd suggest staying close to the action, rather than near the airport. You can always get a shuttle to/from the airport, but you'll be thankful for having your hotel relatively close after a night of socializing. You also won't then have to cut your visiting short to drive/ride way out to the airport (Dulles, right? If so, not close to downtown DC.)

Capitol Hill isn't all that close to Dupont Circle, (but it's a lot closer than Dulles is). If most of Sunday is going to be Dupont Cirle and that area, then you might want to consider closer. (I have no idea where the Spy Museum is. Does anyone know if it's open on Sunday?)

How is the parking around Gallery Place/Chinatown?

Looks like it would make life easier to get tickets in advance for the spy museum. And wow, I thought everything in DC was pretty much free :X. It does sound like fun and I don't want to go cheap on you guys but with 753029482354 free things to do in DC, are we sure we want to do this?

I haven't really been to Dupont Circle other than a trip to a coffee shop one time but it looks like there's a lot to do out there. We could just meet up, walk around, look at houses, talk, drop into places that look interesting, get some food...if that's not too soft on the planning. I have no idea how the parking situation is in the Dupont Circle area though.

IIRC, that's right by MCI Center and consequently there are a bunch of parking garages and I'd imagine there's a decent amount of street parking available on a weekend afternoon. I think Dupont's more or less the same, but I rarely drove there so I can't be sure.

That place is a lot closer to Dupont Circle. I've always parked on the street around Dupont Circle and in the afternoon, it's not too bad. Evenings get pretty bad, though, because so few residents have offstreet parking, and many areas are permit only. You really have to pay attention to signs. They will ticket and tow.

Posted by rivka (Member # 4859) on :

Then I guess the question is whether it's worth the extra $20 to be closer. Part of that equation is, what exactly are we doing?

For example, if people are just going to want to be social and play card games and such, we can do that there. If we're going to be going all over the place (especially since I will have a ride in the morning, when Diana picks me up for breakfast), then maybe I'm better off in the first place.

Posted by pooka (Member # 5003) on :

I have a hide-a-bed and plenty of adjacent floor, but we'll have to plan well, since I live about 40 minutes toward Baltimore.

I was kind of working more from the backyard barbeque paradigm, but meeting in the city should be fine.

I would much prefer free activities for Sunday at least, insofar as we can. Is picnic dinner an option? I have church 1-4, but don't have a problem dropping folks at the New Carrolton Metro stop that morning.

Maybe I'll get my scooter learners by then.

I'm planning to stay at a motel in the DC area. Diana (who should get her butt in this thread (and back on Hatrack altogether, as far as that goes)) was hoping for a place to stay Saturday night. But she will have a car, and so shouldn't require transportation.

Posted by Risuena (Member # 2924) on :

I think that a bbq or picnic would be a great idea one of the days, I just don't know how feasible it would be logistically. If we do go that way and people need rides, I would be more than willing to do some chauffering.

We could always figure out a way to have a large picnic on the mall and then maybe hit some museums? It would be pretty much free, but I don't know if everyone has already seen all the museums and is sick of them.

rivka,
How hard would it be for someone (me, for instance) to set up a kosher picnic? I'm guessing fresh paperplates, platicware, and cups would be kosher, right? (Or not?) Are there any foods that are by default kosher? (I'm guessing fruits? Anything else?)

Karl

By the weekend before, do you mean just you and Kasie? Because I don't think rivka's travel plans are that flexible.

I'm happy to take rivka to the kosher deli if they have takeout.

Here's a link to museums and memorials on the mall. Someone has asked to not go to the Air and Space museum. I've never been in the new American Indian museum, but also the National Archives, and I barely remember going up the Washington Monument.

I have a feeling this site has everything we would possibly want to see. [Smile]

The Washington Monument is best for tight groups (individuals, couple, or families) or for organized groups. It's definitely not a "drop by and drop in" thing. You have to get there early and get tickets and still stand in line. The Monument itself is a wonderful experience, but not very practical for a casual gathering like ours, I don't think.

I like the idea of the mall because it would be easy to decide on a museum on the spot there. Everything is basically walking distance, even the science museum katharina linked to above. The only thing is I don't know any restaurants in that area. But I would be good for either a picnic or for meeting at or heading to the closest kosher place, if there is one.

The mall would also be convenient for rivka if she stays in the Capitol Hill hotel she first linked to (I think).

There's a kosher deli called Eli's on 20th St. There's also a little cafe at the JCC on 16th St.

Most of the kosher restaurants are in Maryland though.

Fresh paper goods are fine. Fresh fruit (and for the most part fresh vegetables) are also fine. Unopened packages of other things that bear a kosher symbol (list here, the two most common symbols being the O-U and the O-K) are also fine.

Diana and I (and Diana keeps promising me she will get herself back on Hatrack and post in this thread, but has yet to do so) can presumably hit the deli that morning.

Hmm. Except Eli's doesn't open until 11. Neither does the JCC. Stacks seems to have closed (presumably due to Abramoff's legal issues). And while the cafe attached to the Holocaust Museum carries sealed kosher lunches, none look terribly appealing.

So presumably Eli's or the JCC then.

I need to know today if I'm going to book at the place I linked at the top of the page . . .

Ask about the walk-down tour. It's generally easier to get in to, although you still have to wait in line for the tickets.

Stacks closed because Abramoff also owned a non-kosher restaurant at the same time he owned Stacks. The Vaad doesn't allow that.

Ah. That makes some sense, I 'spose.

I'll be coming from Bethesda, which is very near Rockville where this place is located. If someone would like to come up with a tentative menu, I could pick up anything we need for a kosher picnic on the mall, (and of course everyone would be welcome to bring anything else they want, right? Does having other non-kosher food around negate the kosher, as long as everything is kept separate?).

I like the picnic idea because:
They're fun.
They're very conducive to socializing (which is the point, right?)
We'd be right there in the midst of dozens of museums, so spontaneity is an option.

Any takers?

Posted by pooka (Member # 5003) on :

Karl- that probably explains why my mom never took us to the Washington monument again. I do think the American Indian looked quite arresting, and it's only been around for a year, give or take, but I'm also amenable to meeting on the mall and going with the flow. I have church from 1-4 but I could call in "sick".

I also have church from 1-4, but I could go to one at 9 and spend the rest of the day hanging out with people. [Smile]

Posted by Evie3217 (Member # 5426) on :

Yeah. I think the picnic idea is the best of both worlds. It allows us to really talk and socialize, but we still have the option of doing something more active. And plus, we don't have to decide now. I think it will be easier to decide when everyone is together. Say, meet by the Smithsonian metro station, or somewhere memorable on the mall so that we aren't all just wandering about the place, especilly for me, since I won't know anyone by sight.

Edit: and what is this about August 19th? Are we hanging out then too? I'm so confused!

There's a deli with take-out right near the KosherMart (that you linked to). It's called "Max's. I highly recommend their shwarma.

Posted by KarlEd (Member # 571) on :

OK, shall we tentatively (?? barring objections) say Picnic on the mall? If so, could someone suggest some good things for me to look for at the kosher deli so we have a good spread? This could be a lot of fun, but I really want to do it right. (Should kosher cheese and kosher meats be kept in separate coolers? Are there any other restrictions I should know about in terms of transport? I plan to just purchase stuff and keep it all in the original packages until we all actually sit down to eat.)

Posted by rivka (Member # 4859) on :

Karl, that sounds great. [Smile] And there's no problem with other people eating non-kosher stuff, as long as it's kept separate. (To that end, anything you picked up would need to stay sealed until then.)

*peruses* They have sushi! I wonder if they have California rolls. *drool*

Posted by KarlEd (Member # 571) on :

Oh, and Evie, the thing with the 19th is that I didn't realize the 20th was a Sunday, so I planned for Saturday originally. Rather than completely change plans, I asked if anyone wants to get together on Saturday in addition to the Sunday stuff. For Saturday, tentatively, Chris, myself, and LadyDay have been discussing meeting at either the National Arboretum, or The National Zoo, probably around 1 or so. (We're still deciding, and so far no one else has given a firm confirmation of meeting on Saturday.)

I sorta knew that. Does that mean at the same sitting(i.e. you'll either eat meat or eat cheese at the picnic but not both) or just at the same time (i.e. a mutton and cheese sandwich)? (And it's all dairy, too, right? Not just cheese.)

And if one of them is to be banned at the picnic, which would you prefer to eat?

Posted by KarlEd (Member # 571) on :

OK, sorry if the questions are getting pestering. If I buy both meat and cheese for those who aren't worried about kosher, should they be transported in separate coolers?

Posted by rivka (Member # 4859) on :

Neither together nor at the same sitting. Not even one right after the other. Yes, it's all dairy.

I have a slight preference for meat (and fish is neutral, and can be served at the same meal as either meat or dairy).

Of course, there's nothing stopping the rest of y'all from having both. But considering that both kosher meat and kosher cheese are more expensive than their non-kosher equivalents, it seems silly to get both kosher.

Do you have a preference of Arboretum or Zoo? Both are possible. I'm thinking we should meet at one or the other, enjoy it, then decide what to do next for those who want to stick around.

As long as each is securely sealed (preferably in at least two water-tight layers), the same cooler is fine. But it might be simpler to have them in separate coolers, if that's easily done.

It's probably easy. Right now I'm thinking I'll drop Chris off with the food at the picnic site and then find a place to park and come back to meet you all. We'll have to pack it back up and take it to the car before doing museums, but I don't think that will be a problem.

I'm totally cool with the picnic idea for Sunday and would love to bring something to pitch in - I'll check the metro rules but I was thinking fruits and veggies. If I can't do a cooler, though, I could bring the sandwich rolls? Or plates/napkins?

For Saturday my first choice is Arboretum but I'm mostly wanting to do something outside [Big Grin] .

DRAT! I forgot to book the hotel on Friday.

Ok, am I better off here or here?

Posted by KarlEd (Member # 571) on :

rivka, I can't tell where the second one is, but if it's really close to the White House, then it's walking distance from The Mall (IMO). The other one looks like a long walk, especially if we're meeting anywhere near the Smithsonian Castle (as someone suggested above, I think). But I'm sure we can adjust the meeting place to be closer to your hotel. The Mall is pretty long, after all. [Smile]

It's here.

But the $99 a night rate seems to only apply if you stay both Saturday and Sunday nights. [Grumble] That one may have just gotten bumped out of consideration.

Anywhere north of The Mall and within a few blocks of it is probably OK, and if we're picnicking I'll be driving so it would be no problem to give you a ride if you need one. (That said, the "other" one you linked above would work.)

Another possibility.
I like this one, although it has no wireless web access.

Ooooh, I *love* Jurys.

It's literally *right* on Dupont Circle - steps from the Red line metro and in a beautiful part of town. But it's far from the Mall - probably not really walking distance - and you'd have to switch metro lines to get down there.

Still, I love that hotel. Their bar is amazing, I go there all the time.

Posted by rivka (Member # 4859) on :

Now, originally we were talking about meeting on Dupont Circle (right?) But now we're talking about meeting on the Mall, so I guess the no-web hotel (alas!) wins.

Does that make sense? (Please keep in mind that I am geographically impaired and get lost in the city I have lived for 25 years.)

Posted by KarlEd (Member # 571) on :

Rivka, why don't you just get the hotel that most appeals to you, and we'll work around it. If we're picnicking, I'll be driving, and I'm sure others will too. I have no problem picking you up on the way and dropping you back (bearing in mind that I have to leave around 6 PM). The area between Dupont and The Mall is very safe and while the distance is a bit of a walk, it's not that bad if you're a walker. (This coming from someone who has no problem walking from Central Park to The Village, if that means anything to you.)

Posted by KarlEd (Member # 571) on :

That said, Dupont Circle is a nice place to be in the evening, much more so than The Mall. If you will be doing anything after The Mall/picnic, that evening, you'll be better off in Dupont Circle since everything around The Mall closes earlier.

wow...this looks more organized than I usually am...ok...Rivka, I could probably share the cost of the hotel room and allow you to get the lower rate if that seems reasonable. It looks like I will leave the Triangle after Mass/sacristan duties are finished on Saturday evening. That means I will arrive in Washington DC around 1:00-2:00am on Sunday. If that won't work, I can probably stay with my husband's cousin who works for the CIA.

I'll have a car for transportation...if that helps. And I have those wonderful "trip-tic" books from AAA to help me get around.

I love food, all food, at any time...well, maybe not Jennie Craig cuisine. I tried my friend's food two weeks ago and decided that I was not cut out to eat nuked food for weeks on end. On the other hand, my friend has lost over 60lbs since January, so it works for her.

I love all the art museums passionately, but I'm game for any entertainment where we can talk and get to know one another.

Then, gather on the mall at eleven o'clock to eat and pick a museum?

Posted by KarlEd (Member # 571) on :

That sounds good to me. I'll probably join in at around 11 at the mall. Where do we want to meet on the mall? It's a really big place. I'd like to suggest meeting on the street side of the sunken sculpture garden in front of the Hirschhorn museum. It's pretty easy to find and the sculpture garden is a real treat. I don't think we can picnic in the garden itself, but I'm sure we can somewhere just outside the wall.

Regarding picnicking, is anyone bringing anything besides me? I don't mind doing the supplying, I just don't want there to be tons of stuff left over as it will likely go to waste. (i.e. left in a car with no refrigeration for hours after the picnic.)

I can bring supplies. What do you want me to bring? [Smile]

Regarding Saturday, let's say noon at The National Arboretum. Let's meet at the Admin Building on the parking lot side. There is a lot to see right there (the Herb Garden, The Bonsai garden, etc.). We can decide what to do after that when we see who all is there. (On that note, PLEASE POST HERE if you are coming on Saturday so we'll know who to look out for.)

Great. I will definitely be there on Saturday.

Can you bring paper plates, napkins, plasticware, etc? (You should bring fresh, unopened packages, I believe).

A blanket would be good, too if you have one you don't mind putting on the ground. (Seating will be BYO.)

Also, I'd appreciate any input into stuff I should bring. I'm going to the kosher market but for now I'm just planning to play it by ear. Rivka, if there's something you don't like please say it now. [Smile] (I'll do some shopping at a non-kosher place, too, most likely, but I'll keep the two separated.)

Posted by katharina (Member # 827) on :

Yes, I would be happy to bring all of that. Plus, a cut-up watermelon.

Hmm...I'm not sure about the blanket. I definitely have one, but they aren't unpacked yet and I don't know which of the 50 boxes it is in. I will try. [Smile]

Posted by KarlEd (Member # 571) on :

I'll try to bring a blanket. More than one wouldn't hurt, though.

Posted by KarlEd (Member # 571) on :

Rivka, what condiments do you prefer? I'll be sure to get a kosher version of what you like. The rest I'll probably get regular, depending on price.

Posted by katharina (Member # 827) on :

[Smile] Okay. *bounce* This will be fun. Matt won't be there - he's in Utah, and I think he has a sense that he might not want to be in a crowd of what he considers to be "katie's friends" right now, but I've had the tour of monuments of few times so I can pass some tour information along.

There's a temperance monunument that is a mini-gazebo with a large statue of two fish intertwined in the center. On the outside, it says "Faith. Hope. Charity. Temperance." It was erected sometime in the early twentieth century, and I think it's hilarious. [Smile]

Posted by rivka (Member # 4859) on :

Mayonnaise -- light, please. But I think you'll find that condiments are the easy part -- most national brands of ketchup, mustard, mayo, and pickles are kosher. Oooh, pickles. I like everything but the sweet kind (and pickle relish *shudder*)

As far as what I don't like, I mentioned sushi . . . but I don't like raw fish much. (Yes, I know.) Then again, you may not be planning to get any sushi at all, so that may be moot. As far as cold cuts, I like pretty much every kind I've had. Mild preference for turkey over beef, and not a huge salami fan -- but I'll eat beef salami in small amounts too.

*bounce* This is gonna be fun!

11 o'clock at the Mall, check.

I won't be making on Saturday, but I'll definitely be there on Sunday. I'll probably be able to bring a blanket or two since we've got all sorts of them around this place and I'll also bring sunscreen for myself and any others who need it because I remember what happened the last time I met Hatrackers on the Mall...

Is there anything else that I could bring?

Posted by Miro (Member # 1178) on :

I'll be there both days. I can also bring stuff - what would be useful?

Posted by KarlEd (Member # 571) on :

Things others can bring on Sunday (Chips, Sodas, cups, or anything I forget [Wink] )

Actually, I'm going to bring bread, sandwich fixings, a couple of side dishes - depending on what is available at the Kosher place (potato salad? Cole slaw?) and maybe some cookies or a cake or something. If someone wants to take charge of the cookies/cake/whatever they certainly can. It would be helpful from a logistics standpoint if we all brought our own beverages.

It would be nice to get a head count so I know how much sandwich stuff to buy. Anything perishable that isn't eaten will be wasted since we'll have nowhere to store it.

Katie, I emailed you my cellphone number through the blind forwarding thingy in your profile. Let me know if you don't get it.

Posted by rivka (Member # 4859) on :

I would lay odds on the kosher deli having potato salad, coleslaw, and several other side dishes (at a guess, a pasta salad or two, Israeli salad, a bean salad of some sort, and probably both noodle and potato kugel).

Posted by kwsni (Member # 1831) on :

Miro, I would love to stay with you on Saturday night. I'll email you my cell number (Hopefully it will work up there, it doesn't, downhere in the boondocks.)I'll see if I can get out of chores on Saturday morning(or do them really early), so I can go to arburetum, too.

I could probly bring pasta salad or something.

Ni!

I'll be there Saturday at noon and will show up at 11 on Sunday [Big Grin] . I can take the sweets (how do oatmeal cookies sound?) an' will bring a big bag of baby carrots.

Oh! Should I bring lettuce/tomato for the sandwiches? Or do we need that stuff? I like lettuce so I would bring that regardless but I don't so much like tomatoes so I'll only bring 'em if people want them.

Eve and I are planning to attend both the arboretum and the picnic.

The last word I've seen on the arboretum is this:

quote:
Regarding Saturday, let's say noon at The National Arboretum. Let's meet at the Admin Building on the parking lot side.
As for looking out for us, pictures of Eve and I look like this.

WRT the picnic, the last word I've seen is this:

quote:
I'll probably join in at around 11 at the mall. Where do we want to meet on the mall? It's a really big place. I'd like to suggest meeting on the street side of the sunken sculpture garden in front of the Hirschhorn museum.
We will bring a Mediterranean appetizer spread (hummus, tabouleh, and/or tapenade plus pitas) if anyone is interested. Either that or my famous cheese ball and tuna pate (two dishes, not just one).

Express preferences if you have them. [Smile]

Rivka, I doubt the second would be acceptable for you (both are prepared, and my mixer has definitely had both meat and dairy in it at some point), but I'll only make at most two of the three if I do the Mediterranean thing, so I'll look for kosher certification on what I buy.

Edit: Does anyone know which metro stops work best for each location?

Posted by Miro (Member # 1178) on :

The Arboretum is not particularly close to a Metro stop, but I got this from the Arboretum website:
quote:
On weekends and holidays except December 25, enjoy direct shuttle service from Union Station by hopping on the X6 metrobus. The bus operates every 40 minutes. Click here to see the schedule.

From the Hirschhorn website:
quote:
NEAREST METRO STOP
L'Enfant Plaza (Blue, Orange, Yellow, and Green lines). Use the Smithsonian Museums exit to Maryland Avenue and Seventh Street SW.

I will definitely be there for both Saturday and Sunday. It's going to be interesting to find my way to both places though, as I have no idea how to get around the city. If anyone feels like picking me up at American University *wink wink* I would really appreciate it. I'll post a picture of myself a little later.

Saturday doesn't look good for me, but I may be up for the earlier meeting Sunday. I guess the cookies haven't been called yet. I guess we'll want pareve prepackaged ones since we are having cold cuts. I may bring something homemade for the gentiles, but we'll see. Two batches of cookies, in any case.

I hope Diana and I won't be considered terribly rude for meeting up separately before the 11 o'clock time. I love y'all, but I've known her for almost 20 years, and I haven't seen her in person for about 3 or 4 (I think that's right).

Saturday looking about 95 percent probable for me and JVP.

I'm still groggy (yes, I know it's past noon), so am having trouble sorting through what would be good for us to bring for the picnic. But we will bring something.

Posted by ladyday (Member # 1069) on :

k Pooka has the sweets then...I'll do veggies *nods*.

Edit - any preferences for lunch on Saturday? I can start looking things up, unless we're meant to be eating before we get there [Smile] .

So we plan to be there on SATURDAY. We won't bring any picnic stuff [Big Grin] .

Rivka, if you're eating meat at the picnic, does that mean you won't eat any cheese at the picnic? Or do they just have to be kept secret?

Because I can bring some sealed kosher cheese spread, but I won't bother if you wouldn't eat it anyway. [Smile]

[Laugh] Ok, that was one of the funnier typos I have seen. [Big Grin]

They cannot be eaten together, and cheese cannot be eaten after meat (not for 3 or 6 hours, depending on which custom your family has). Meat cannot be eaten after hard (i.e., aged) cheese for a minimum of one hour, but after soft cheese one would just have to rinse out their mouth and have a bite of something neutral.

*curious* What kind of cheese spread is this?

I'm staying at a friend's house for the weekend and we are doing brunch on Saturday, so we will arrive at the Arboretum well fed. That shouldn't stop any of the rest of you from hooking up for lunch if you want. I was thinking that eventually we'd decide on dinner plans for those who are interested in hanging out that long. Hopefully I can talk my friend into tagging along with us for the day. (He knows all the good restaurants within 20 miles of Bethesda. [Wink] )

YAY for Sharpie and JVP! Glad we'll see you on Saturday.

An hour before another stupid meeting...grrrr

OK, the positive Diana will make an appearance. I just found out that my daughter is leaving for Chicago on Sunday, so I will drive up to Washington DC very early on Sunday morning instead of late Saturday night. Actually, this makes sense on plenty of fronts. I'm an absolute morning person, I don't have to impose on Pooka at some ungodly hour in the morning, and I can have one last dinner with Lorraine before she disappears until Thanksguiving. Rivka, tell me where to meet you on Sunday morning and give me a time. Thanks-I am looking SO forward to meeting y'all!

Please don't bother. Its very sweet, but having cheese and meat at the same meal is more bother than it's worth, for me. But thanks for the offer.

Diana, can you call me after your meeting? I'd call you, but if you're about to have a meeting that seems futile.

*LAUGH*

That is an awesome premise. I am going to be a very good girl, and wait to read those until I am at home.

If anything could get me to do iTunes, SG is the thing. But given that I'm leaving town AGAIN in just over a week, I think I'll resist.

For now, anyway. [Wink]

I had a WONDERFUL time yesterday! Great to meet so many new people, and to see old friends again. [Smile]

And I'm actually a bit worried about our no-shows. Has Dags posted at all on Hatrack today?

I just mean the ones of SG-1 and Atlantis currently airing new episodes. Also, keep in mind that the quality of the videos is nowhere near DVD quality (though that keeps download times very reasonable). I consider them adequately good quality to watch full screen on my 17 inch monitor, but only barely.

Just wanted to say how very much I enjoyed meeting everyone in Washington DC this weekend. Karl and Chris, your wonderful lunch stuff was really appreciated. This may sound odd, but I was reminded how rarely I get the opportunity to talk with people who are between the ages of 25-35...and how much I earn and think about when I do get that chance. You all were extremely kind to Rivka's old teacher...I am so glad I came. Worth ten hours of driving time? In a heartbeat. I hope the 75 party actually happens...hint, hint...until next time, THANK YOU!

I'm sorry if I caused anyone to worry. I missed the picnic for a stupid reason. I didn't post about it because by the time I realized I would miss it, everyone going would have already left. I didn't have any cell numbers.

After that, I haven't been on. I was so wrapped up in stuff that I haven't checked the board since then. It didn't occur to me that anyone would worry, although it should have.

So, sorry for standing people up and for not posting sooner about it.

Wow! The first picture of me outside of a group shot in four years...so that's what I look like to others. Great pics, and I really enjoyed the other albums (is that what you call them?) too.

Who ever you are, Dagonee, I am looking forward to meeting you someday. Everyone trully missed you, and WANTED to believe you have a real existence beyond this forum.

Here are my and Sharpie's photos from the Arboretum on Saturday.

Enjoy!

Diana,
I, for one, am looking forward to seeing you post more on Hatrack. You were a joy to have in the group.

John/Sharpie, those photos are great. Now I feel bad for procrastinating. All my photos are still in the camera.

BTW, the cracker barrel thing failed to generate any excitement with my relatives so we're going to six flags instead.
P.S. cool pictures, Miro [Smile]

Viewing those pictures makes me happy. It's good to know that there are sane, happy people within 100 miles of where I live.

You're just rubbing in the fact that you didn't deign to join us. [Cry]

No, I'm really not. I was sorely tempted to come.

Instead, I helped my brother-and-sister-in-law move to Christiansburg, and then took the family to Busch Gardens. While I won't provide pictures (forgot the stupid camera), we had LOTS of fun for a last-minute-late-summer fling.

Family obligations come first. [Smile]

(And this way, I can pretend it's not that you're avoiding me. [Wink] )

Who said anything about sane?

Shhhhh! Don't you want him to consider coming to the next one?

Yeah. Sane people aren't nearly as much fun as the rest of us.
