Interesting article from the Washington Monthly:
http://www.washingtonmonthly.com/features/2006/0607.benen.html
quote:
Of course, there was once a time when reporters believed that the sexual peccadilloes of American leaders were a private matter, and the nation was probably better off for that belief. In the late 1990s, Broder himself argued several times that these kinds of stories don't do voters any favors. But the rules were shifting, thanks largely to the mainstream press and the GOP's relentless pursuit of Bill Clinton. Now the Times piece suggests that we're in for three long years in which reporters will judge Hillary Clinton's character by rumors about her husband. But it may be Republicans who have the most to lose.

Lurking just over the horizon are liabilities for three Republicans who have topped several national, independent polls for the GOP's favorite 2008 nominee: Sen. John McCain (affair, divorce), former House Speaker Newt Gingrich (affair, divorce, affair, divorce), and former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani (divorce, affair, nasty divorce). Together, they form the most maritally challenged crop of presidential hopefuls in American political history.

(emphasis mine)

Personally, John McCain's affair and divorce annoy me (his wife waited faithfully for him while he was a PRISONER OF WAR in Vietnam for SIX YEARS...and he has the nerve to cheat on her?!? Almost makes me not want to vote for him on that alone...).

We need to get sexual predilections out of politics. It's ...

Well, maybe we don't.

Kasie, do me a favor and scoot over to the valedictorian thread. I'm curious about your opinion.

As far as I can see, Gingrich doesn't have any room to criticize anyone, ever, about moral behavior. This is just about the scummiest thing I've ever heard of anyone doing:

quote:
Gingrich obtained his first divorce in 1981, after forcing his wife, who had helped put him through graduate school, to haggle over the terms while in the hospital, as she recovered from uterine cancer surgery.
I would never vote for Gingrich, not even for dog catcher. But the above is not the reason for that. I have never liked his manner nor his political positions.

I want my president to get laid on a regular basis. Keeps their heads clear. I think that is Bush's problem, he hasn't gotten any in a while.

Um . . . are we talkingabout putting rapists in office, then?

Or worse, gays? [Wink]

I disagree. Laura and George seem like an affectionate couple. I once saw them looking at each other . . . in public.

In public, they looked at each other? That's so messed up. I only make eye contact in private.

watch out for the eye-babies, breyerchick.

That'll get you in trouble from Pensacola College, and I hear they're tough on people like you. Especially if you get eye-pregnant.

You trying to tell us that the swelling is from allergies? Puh-leaze.

An interview with McCain by the Financial Times. I think it should be viewable, at least for a while, by nonsubscribers.

An article drawing from the interview in part (also hopefully subscription-free).
