Italy.

Because my sister is living in Rome right now.

Posted by Kama (Member # 3022) on :

italia cuz they're better.

Italy. Because then I'll have a chance to sleep that night.

Italy, because they always ruin things.

Like say... Zizou's send off and Australia's run.

Steelers!

France, because the Italians are a bunch of divers who don't deserve to win.

And Zinedine Zidane is such an awesome name.

Italy.

Because they are the better team.

Posted by Angiomorphism (Member # 8184) on :

France, becasue they just came off of beating brazil and portugal, and because italy is the worst thing to happen to soccer since shin pads! plus if italy wins everyone will think they rigged it ;-)

Posted by Avadaru (Member # 3026) on :

Italy, 'cause the players are hawt.

Nah, actually, I'm rooting for Italy 'cause they're amazing players.

And they're gorgeous.

Posted by The Rabbit (Member # 671) on :

Italy because:

1. Italy's defense is impenetrable. No one (except Italy) has scored against them yet in this world cup.

2. They beat Germany ruining the week for all of my colleagues here. (Yes I'm working in Germany again this summer)

3. Aduvardu's right. The Italian players are hawt!!

4. Everyone in France is too busy sitting on the street waiting for the Tour de France to come by. Where as everyone in Italy is in Germany for the weekend.

If only...
Note that if they were in Germany I'd be happy with it too.

Germany wins. I don't care that they're not playing. Germany FTW.

I'm really enjoying this World Cup. Particularly when France knocked Portugal out of the running -- god, but I hate Ronaldo. If you have that kind of sportsmanship, I'll cheerfully watch you die in a fire.

And Italy's another team of cheaters and dive queens. I'll be stumping for France, but I think it's a long shot -- poor sports and pansies they might be, but Italy's freaking fast, and in truth I didn't expect France to get this far. But... still. Vive le France!

Can't wait for Sunday.

Posted by Soara (Member # 6729) on :

France, because they're sexier.

Posted by Jhai (Member # 5633) on :

Word, Lalo. If a Portugal player falls in the next 75/105 minutes, he better be *injured.* Especially Ronaldo.

Tee hee! Well, even if they lost the World Cup, Portugal's going to make a killing with their new diving team...

Posted by Eisenoxyde (Member # 7289) on :

I won't be rooting for France as much as I'll be rooting against the Azzurri diving squad.

A HEADBUTT!

Posted by Fitz (Member # 4803) on :

What an idiotic thing for Zidane to do in his last World Cup game.

Posted by Tstorm (Member # 1871) on :

Yeah, that stupidity will probably shame him for a long time.

I'm betting this game comes down to penalty kicks.

Posted by Nato (Member # 1448) on :

And Italy makes the last PK...

Posted by Squish (Member # 9191) on :

WHEEEEEEEE!

I hate penalty kicks.

Yay, Italy. [Frown]

Oh well. I agree, I'm not a PK fan either.

congrats to Italy's fans, though.

Why aren't we allowed to use [img] tags still?

Zidane rules. That headbutt was awesome. I bet he was tired of how everyone put him up on the "legendary" pedestal of being such a great player. Everyone talks about it being "such a shame", but I've seen worse, and Zidane wouldn't have done it unless Materazzi deserved it.

There's no excuse for such a lack of sportsmanship. It's soccer, not ultimate fighting.

Curious: what would've happened if Italy and France had still been tied after the Penalty Kicks?

Posted by Tstorm (Member # 1871) on :

Sudden Death penalty kicks, right?

They did a series of five kicks, where the only outcome that mattered, was who scored the best of 5.

If they were still tied after 5, then they take turns, and the first team to miss, loses.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong...I'm not a soccer expert. [Smile]

Posted by Soara (Member # 6729) on :

I hate when it gets to that point...It's like they're playing kick-the-ball-really-hard, not soccer. But I guess it's what you gotta do when the games keeps going on and on.

My mom didn't realize the game was over. On the TV, fireworks were going off, my cousins were cheering, and the players were shouting. She taps my should and goes "How much longer left in the game?" I turn and say "Italy won, the game is over!" "Oh, I thought they just took the lead" Aparently my mom needs a sign that says 'Game is over!'

Italy in blue confused me. I caught the game from the middle and had the teams mixed up in my head for the first ten minutes I watched.

Penalty kicks are so anticlimactic, but I enjoyed the game anyway.

What's up with the PK-hating? I love it when it goes to PKs. It's the most exciting part of the game (though obviously not the best). It's the only part of the game where every second matters. I love soccer because I love watching the skill and strategy of moving the ball into scoring position and constantly having fights for the ball. The teamwork, the skillful passes, and the ball-handling are the best parts of the game for me, but the PKs is the final adrenaline rush to end the game.

I don't like how everything comes down to those couple seconds, and those two players. Soccer is a team sport, it shouldn't depend on a few kicks at the end. Also, it must be sickeningly nervous for the goalie and the person shooting.
But I know it's what they have to do eventually.

That doesn't mean he didn't deserve a red card for it.

I went to Church this morning expecting to watch the replay of the match this afternoon. Our pastor blew it for me, using the game (and it's score -_-) as a reference in his message. Yeah, I was angry. But I was at Church so... I forgave him. =D

I slept without earplugs last night. [Smile]

OK, so if they HAD gotten to "Sudden Death Penalty Kicks"... which team would've gone first? Would Italy have continued to go first? Or would they have flipped a coin?

Posted by Vast Left-Wing Conspiracy (Member # 9384) on :

I think Italy would have continued to go first, but if Italy made a kick, France would still get a chance to match it.

Here's a working link to the head butt... with some extra graphics added!

Tada!

Even without seeing it, knowing he had a history of head butting and stomping, I'm not at all shocked he got the red card. How ever, after seeing it... Is there a black card? Just on general princple?

Long story short: It's a team game, and he probably cost his the cup.

No matter what Zidane did, and why, and whether or not it ruined his team's chance at the Cup, or devastated a generation of small children, this fact remains: the man has the coolest name ever.

About the penalty kicks: after the first 5, if the teams are still tied, they continue shooting a PK each in the same order as before (here: Italy first, France following) until during one of those paired PKs a team scores and the other one doesn't. If every field player that was in at the end of the match scores (including the goalkeepers), they start over with the first player on the list.

Useless statistic of the day: up to this final, the Italians have never won on PKs during a World Cup event. I guess there's a first for everything.
