I've been a fun of Colbert of a long time, and think his show has surpassed the Daily Show from whence it sprang.

But after seeing this video, I like him even more.

It's Stephen Colbert on the Conan O'Brien show, and at about 4:40 in that video, he starts talking about what a D&D and Tolkien nerd he was in high school.

I think I might have a teeny tiny man crush on him now.

Heh, I've known that for awhile now.

BTW, here's the video of the 6/6/06 episode where Colbert talks about Middle Earth and the Balrog. It's still hilarious. Any pundit who has read, and for that matter has a freakish recollection of, The Silmarillion, gets extra points in my book. His frequent D&D talk cracks me up too.

Hold on I have more...

Okay, Click on the Viggo Mortensen interview. Back when Stephen was on the Daily Show, and Viggo came a calling, Jon asked Stephen to tell everyone who Aragorn was in a recording, which he did, at length, and Viggo, who'd already heard of Stephen, actually sent him a platter of LOTR characters carved out of chocolate. Solidifying Viggo's status as a class act, and Stephen's status as a dorkgasm waiting to happen. He's had the figures on the Colbert Report before I believe.

He cracks me up, and seriously, SERIOUSLY knows his Tolkien. And I thought I'd read the Histories of Middle Earth one too many times, he puts me to shame.

This, by the way, will always be my favorite summary of Stephen Colbert's sense of humor and personality. [Smile] Enjoy.

Yeah, I like him even better than I did before seeing that clip.

Wait, I have even more stuff!

LOTR Stephen fanfiction

It's a short storyish thing about Stephen Colbert meeting Gandalf in Middle Earth and taking down a Ringwraith. It's pretty funny.

That's great! Christopher Lee has to be a guest on "The Report" one day, just so the two of them can have a tolkien-off.

I agree that the Report has surpassed The Daily SHow. Mainly, this is because it is still a comedy show. I still love Stewart, and would follow Rob Corddry on a groupie train, but Stephen Colbert's show makes me laugh harder these days.

If Colbert is a fantasy geek, I am pretty sure Corddry is a Deadhead. He knows way too much about following musicians around.

Oh my goodness, that Conan episode cracked me up: "Or don't you speak Quenya? You are not my people."

I can tell I'll be wasting various parts of my day watching the other links posted in this thread.

Those two videos cracked me up, particularly the 6/6/6 one...so much that JenniK came over and we watched both of them again.

I caught his error on the 6/6/6 episode before I saw the Conan one though.

JenniK thought it was funny that he has bred and somewhere in the world his offspring are growing stronger!

And probably learning Quenya as we post.

What's great is that he clearly conveys the irony (i.e., that Tolkien was intentionally creating direct analogs between Satan/Morgoth, Devils/Balrogs, etc.) while still making it funny as hell.

It's the second half that many of us LOTR geeks don't do well.

I didn't catch the mistake right away, I haven't read the Silmarillion recently enough, all the names sounded like they were placed about right, but I should have picked up on the lack of Angbad. For shame Lyrhawn, for shame.

A friend of mine speaks a bit of Sindarin, but then as I understand it, Sindarin is the lesser fleshed out language anyway.

When I saw it, there was a link on the right side for a video entitled "Ted Hitler". It was Colbert and Stewart, and I was laughing so hard it hurt. Which, I'll grant you, isn't tough at the moment.

I have knit Cirth into a cable pattern...just sayin'.

And Steven Colbert is one of our geeks. Northwestern School of Communication.
