Well, yes, tonight my third Ipod showed me the sadmac face, and will play my beloved Bach, no more.

A new twist to this failure: it started actually playing the music but in a really wierd and jerky way, THEN, it went to sad mac!

Can't say I am particularly sad to see this model go though, it was the worst one yet. It was a photo generation 60GB, so it was actually BIGGER than my first two 3rd gen ipod 30GBs. Add to that, the screen immediately got all washed out right after I bought it, and I have been just waiting for something else to go wrong. It only took 9 months this time, but last time my ipod lasted only 7 months. I use them very frequently, and the hard drives give out pretty easily.

Lucky for me, I learned long ago to ALWAYS buy applecare for these things, so the replacement will be covered under my plan! Free upgrade! But I now have to drive to an applestore to exchange it :urk: and the closest ones are Burlingame (pretty far from here) and Sacramento (the armpit of America, or the worst place to shop on Earth).

So Its a bittersweet day saying goodbye to my ipod photo. She will not be missed... but she will be missed.

???

You either have to go to Vermont or upstate California to replace your iPod?

[Eek!]

And here I was complaining 'cuz it takes so long to go to the big malls over in Omaha...

Better luck with your next iPod. Seems like the device is not geared to your style of usage, or something.

No, they said BurlingAME. Not BurlingTON! Silly.

Haven't bought applecare. My understanding is I can up until a year after- because they'll still replace my ipod up to a year later.

There is a replacement policy standard on all ipods for a year anyway... applecare is full repair and replacement for 2 years.

Bob- The confusing thing is that just south of San Francisco there is a BurlinGAME, and in the east bay there is another BurlingTON (known by most peninsulites by an annoying commercial for the Burlington coat factory, iirc)

My style of usage is everyday, for hours, and lots of recording, running, changing tracks, loading new stuff all the time. The things aren't flimsy, but I give them all they can handle. [Wink]

Oh, btw Bob on your nomenclature: We call it NORTHERN California, but never UPSTATE California (sounds too much like New York). This is similar to non San Francisco locals calling the city "frisco" or non Californians calling the state "Cali," (I have even heard eastern Europeans call it "cali" [Confused] ). Mind you, LA people may call it "cali," but this is mainly because LA people are often out of staters.

I call it "Cali" (at least in writing) and I'm from South Bay. Well, I grew up in the REAL Northern California - i.e. that stretch of 48,800 square miles north of San Francsico - but I've called Sunnyvale my home for the past seven years or so.

You do realize that there are at least two or three Apple Stores in South Bay, and I think there's one in San Francisco proper too, right? They're all over the bay - so whatever else happens, you don't have to go into the *shudder* valley. It's hot enough here near the coast.

*edit*
Oh - looking at your profile, it appears that you live in Davis. My sympathies - how hot is it there right now? South Bay got up to 105-108 today. Record highs, baby!

Why can't you just apply for a mail-in?

I grew up in California. I'll call it whatever the heck I want.

Wow...honestly why do you keep buying crap that lasts less than a year? Is all your music Apple's proprietary sound format or something?

Or is it a devious plan under which you're certain to get free upgrades yearly thanks to applecare?

I have an iPod that I bought in May 2003 that's still going strong.

I bought a shuffle so I could have something a little more portable for the gym, and that's been plugging along about a year now with no problems.

You must seriously beat yours up, or something...

[Dont Know]

Huh, I've always seen "Cali" as a Northern CA thing. (I'm from L.A.) But you're right about "Northern California" and "Southern California" (or "SoCal"). I don't know about "frisco"; I had never heard that from a Californian but was still confused when I moved to Dallas, where there is a city called Frisco.

I grew up in Burnal Heights (sf proper) and Brisbane, just to the south of Burnal Heights. I study at Davis and go home every six motnhs or so, when I have time. Right now I am in added inconvenience because I lent my car out to a sister who is home for the summer, so I am carless and ipodless. [Cry]

To answer your question, it is averaging 110 this week. I took a teen group (I work at the TC here) on a trip to Great America yesterday, and it didn't get below the 110s all day.

[Big Grin] Well that is a different matter.

I do get tired of the "Cali" thing, which you didn't do, and "upstate" is not bad, I just never heard it before.

The Frisco thing is terrible, I just can't stand people saying it. I don't exactly why, but I think it has to do with people implying an intimate knowledge of the city where I actually grew up, when in fact no one from there is likely to call if Frisco. Mind you, I am sure ten people can tell me that they ARE from San Francisco, and they DO call it Frisco, but honestly these people are just beyond reasoning with. The same, unfortunately, for those Californians who call our fair state "Cali." Its just completely without class.
