For the past few days I've had the most painful thing on the way back and to the left of my tongue. I have no idea what it is, I can't see it in the mirror, but my mom says I might have something like a blister or a pimple on my tongue. That sounds like it might be right, does that happen? All I know is it's the most painful thing ever. Whenever I breathe, swallow, or talk it feels as if there's a knife being shoved in and out of my tongue, over and over.

I went to a doctor yesterday, but she was a moron and kept insisting that the only problem was I had too much mucus in the back of my throat. She took one look for a second inside my mouth and that was it. I kept telling her about the cut on my tongue but she didn't listen and just gave me medicine for the mucus and we left. I've been taking the medicine since yesterday and it does nothing for the cut.

I've eaten maybe 500 calories in the past 48 hours and I'm starving, but whenever I eat, the pain is unbearable. I've gargled with lots of salt water and it helps for a few minutes after but then the pain returns full strength. I have no idea what else to do. Has anyone ever experienced anything like this? How long does it take to go away? What can I do in the meantime? Help! So much pain right now!

You sound like you have a small sore, perhaps a canker sore, back there. It can hurt so much it feels like a much bigger wound than it actually is. [Smile] It can last several days.

Try something medicinal to numb the area. Salt water is excellent too, keep doing it. Medications include oral lidocaine preparations meant for the mought. Like oragel. You'd have to touch a qtip to the medicine then touch the part of your mouth that hurts. There's also sprays with numbing medicine, like chloraseptic spray. And cepachol lozenges are my favorite for sore throats. You'd have to talk to the pharmacist about what preparations are over the counter there.

Numb it, then eat, then numb it again.

Orajel is really good.

I know everyone says that Listerine dries out your mouth and makes it take longer to heal, but it's the only mouthwash that's done any good for me. The peroxide one doesn't seem to help it heal as quickly. And also when I have a cut, the Listerine is uncomfortable on it for a little while, but it feels numb for a while afterwards.

But not the minty Listerine. The citrus whatever one.

Would those medicines have to be applied to the afflicted area? Because it's way in the back of my tongue and I can't even see it in the mirror. The weird thing is when I try to touch around where it hurts, I can't find anything. Nothing hurts when I touch it in the area it's hurting, so I can't even find out what it is that's hurting, if it's a cut or a sore or whatever. It's like a nonexistant knife is moving in and out of my mouth.

Thanks alot for the help. I'm going to try to go to a pharmacy and look for that stuff. But are there any that wouldn't have to be applied directly on the sore? A spray might work, though.

Chloriseptic always numbed my entire mouth in addition to my throat.

But in all honesty, you can numb half your mouth with orajel without intending to do so.

I'd swish with Listerine, then put some Orajel on a q-tip and get it as far back under your tongue on the affected side as you can.

I found two bottles of Vick's Chloraseptic in the back of a medicine cabinet. Problem is one of them was bought about 6 years ago when I got knocked in my mouth playing basketball when I was about 10, and I'm not so sure about the other one. Do those things expire? They don't have a date on them. If I'm going to use one it's going to be the one I'm not sure about since I'm pretty sure it was bought within a couple of years. Is that also too long ago?

I don't know what's in Chloriseptic, but I don't think it goes bad.

I found expiration dates on the bottles and they're both bad, so I'm going now to CVS to buy stuff. If orajel numbs alot of my mouth, would I still be able to talk normally? I'm going out later and I don't want to sound like an idiot when I talk.

Well, considering that the cut is on the base of your tongue, I wouldn't recommend a lot of talking to begin with. I mean, you'll probably be fine.

But if you talk, the orajel wears off faster.

I highly recommend the salt water. Use as much salt as you can get dissolved.

If you could reach it, I'd suggest straight salt or cream of tartar right straight on the sore. Hurts like the dickens, but cures it even faster.
