William Goldman...

I assume that most of you have read The Princess Bride. But how much of Goldman's other writings have you read?

The Marathon Man was better than the movie. Of course. But then he wrote a sequel. And when I read the last couple of pages, I felt like I needed to wash my hands, over and over. Just thinking about that ending makes me queasy.

And then there's The Color of Light. It came out in paperback in 1985, the year I graduated from college. I still have that copy. And I'm most of the way through my third reading.

I'm not sure why I'm reading it. It could be because Goldman is the best creator of people I've ever seen in my life. With all due respect to OSC, Goldman creates people I wouldn't be surprised to meet later today. They're that real. Which is why it hurts so much when he hurts them, I guess.

I'm not sure where I'm going with this. I was just wondering, I guess, whether any of you have read this book, and whether you have anything to say about it.

I wish he'd write Buttercup's Baby... but I haven't read anything else of his.
