I'm missing about 1/2 inch from the middle finger of my right hand. This happened as a result of an accident when I was 11 or 12. I was at a Scout meeting in the back room, which has a heavy metal door. Three other boys ran in and slammed the door in order to keep a kid who was running after them out. Unfortunately, when they did this, I happened to have my hand near one of the hinges of the door.
Kinda funny story, right after this happened, I'd somehow gotten it in my mind that washing it off was of supreme importance. So I ran out into the hallway and tried to get into the boys' bathroom. It was locked, so I then tried to bash it down with my shoulder. Didn't work so well. Then I ran over to the girls', which was open, and with great relief run some water over my forshortened finger that was gushing blood. Whatever magical transformation I expected to take place didn't occur though.
Anyway, I'm relating this story to some people I had met and one of them asks me, completely seriously, "So, did you sue anyone over this?" Right then I knew that there was no way I was ever going to be able to relate to these people.

A couple of years ago, I accidentally bumped my head on some stairs in my apartment complex. To keep this short, the gash required several stitches in my scalp. I told the apartment complex about the low ceiling problem, but I didn't ask them to pay the medical bill.
Some people asked me why I didn't ask them to pay the bill. Here's why: My own clumsiness is no one else's fault, and I feel it's a matter of personal responsibility.

I have a sister that's an attorney. I've stopped telling her about most of my stories, because she'd always ask "why didn't you sue?"
I got bumped from the back by another car. We got out, saw that there wasn't any damage, then got back in and pretended it never happened. "Why didn't you sue? Weren't you injured?"
I purposely crashed in to a tree once (no brakes, so it was either that or the middle of heavy cross traffic). She seriously suggested sueing the condo association. Why? Because she CAN.
I can just imagine her walking around with my mother sometimes, waiting for my mother to fall so she can get her lawsuit.

I recently changed primary physicians because the old one retired. The new provider made a change in an ongoing course of medication. Within two weeks, I had a reocurance of the original symptoms and am in the process of getting things stablized and back to normal. (read old and fat and taking pills)
Two relevant comments:
I am saddened by the number of people, friends and relations, who have asked if I intend on sueing the new doctor and express suprise when I say no.
And a local ER Physician, who was asked to assist my new primary care physician because the new Dr is located in another state, insisted that I be hospitalized for medication. When I declined and opted to take the medication on an outpatient basis, he warned "Now, you are going to be responsible for your own health." Well Duh! Who else cares about my health.
