At my work I do a lot of errands. I work at a school and do computer repairs, network management, training, et cetera.

My boss told me he could use the school budget to buy me a palm. He is thinking the price range is around $250. Since I can keep it once I quit, I don't mind going a little higher and paying the difference.

What I NEED is something that I can use as a Calendar with also the ability to do checklists to keep track of my multiple projects.

I don't need email ability since we don't have wireless. It might be COOL to sync with email so I can read some of my tech requests.

I would LIKE the ability to podcast and or listen to mp3.

I have never had a handheld device. Can anyone help me understand my options, price, and differences between products? I live close to a BestBuy, Walmart, Staples, and the Internet [Razz] .

Thanks

EDIT: My cell is with Verizon, but I don't think I want to go the all-in-one route. I have email and picture taking turned off on my phone. I have never seen one of those thingys.

[Razz]

Reminds me of the Jack Black Spiderman Parody where the hair on his palm didn't surprise him.

Do you have a cell phone? Check to see if you can get a good deal on a smart phone by renewing your contract. Cingular got me a Siemens sx66 for only $50. I bought an SD card for some extra space, and it has everything. I use the calendar and to do list for everything.

I'm a big fan of the Palm brand. I have a Palm Tungsten E, which has been replaced by the newer E2. As you can see, the E2 currently comes with a free memory card and runs about $200.

That memory card is important if you want to be able to play mp3s. In fact, if you want to be able to play music or other audio files, I recommend getting a 1 GB card (available from places like Buy.com for less than $50, I think) -- 256 MB is only a couple dozen songs.

Dell usually has great deals on those memory cards to. Last I saw they had a 2gb for $50.

I totally could not figure out why your boss wanted to buy you a tree. [Blushing]

The biggest difference between Palm OS and Windows-based PDA devices is what they link with. I had to purchase a separate add-on software so that I could synch my Palm with the calendar in Outlook (our corporate shared calendar is in Outlook, so it's just easier if all the calendars are...).

My suggestion is that if you need Windows compatibility, go with one of the hand-held computer type things from Dell or Compaq/HP.

If you don't need Windows compatibility in the handheld itself, Palm's system is (to my mind) better, more intuitive, and maybe even better supported.

You may not want to tell your boss this, but the best deal going right now is to purchase a refurb Palm III from Overstock.com That device does everything it sounds like you need, it works great, and hey, what the heck, who wants a color screen and rechargeable batteries anyway.

But...if you really MUST purchase new, then go for the color. Also, you can get e-books for your Palm and it's a lot easier to read with black letters on a white background of the color screen.

Good luck!

I got my Pocket PC. It is an hp iPAQ h1945. I am a little bummed because it was "checked" out to one of our vice principals. He hardly used it, so he brought it for me.

It looks like it will do everything I need, think would be cool, and want. I am a little bummed because it is on inventory and I doubt I get to keep it. If I would have bought one first, it would of been mine forever.

He lost the disk to install active sync, but the box says not to plug it into your usb port until you install active sync.

When I go to the website, it only gives me updates for the device itself.

I just talked an online friend through buying a Palm T|X, which is the E (the type I have) with a bigger screen, longer battery life, and WiFi.
