Just curious. I know there's a few more of us in the region (me included), now that school's started, and it might be nice to have a meet-up. Nothing fancy, unless people really want.

Thoughts?

Oh man, I want to come. I have never been to Toronto, but it's on my list of cities to visit. *wistful* I won't be coming, but I'd like to.

Depending on when it happens, we may be able to sneak up.

Posted by Noemon (Member # 1115) on :

I've been wanting to go to a Toronto gathering for some time. It will depend on my schedule, but it's entirely possible that I could make it. If I do I'll probably drive up (from SW Ohio), and would be willing to pick up people on the way.

Noemon and Toronto in the same trip? I would have to go.

Posted by twinky (Member # 693) on :

Depending on the weekend, I imagine that I could drive up. I'm not that far away.

Posted by Noemon (Member # 1115) on :

Go? Hell, I think you'd have to ride with me. [Smile]

This is assuming that I'm able to make it, of course. When were you thinking, Eaquae Legit?

[Smile] [Smile] [Smile]

I'm always around and available for casual (I don't have class until 6:00 today [Wink] ) or highly organized gatherings (except for one October or November weekend).

EL, I remember now. You're at U of T now, aren't you? If you're right here we should definately meet up somewhere for coffee and somewhat stunted (I mean, highly witty, of course) conversation.

Wasn't someone else (Reiko?) coming to U of T too or am I delusional on one or both counts?

Alternatively, you could drive to my place and I could drive the rest of the way. Thus we'd share the gas costs. [Smile]

Shorty wanna ride with me, ride with me....

Sorry, it made that song get stuck in my head and I had to share. Now I'll be singing it the rest of the day. And that's the only line I know.

We're both here. And this means I'll most definitely make it for at the very least part of it.

[Edit] I forgot to add that I'm here and frequently bored, so coffee or whatever would be fun.

I don't have any particular desire to go to Toronto, but the coolness quotient for this gathering is already registering a strong 8.5.

She didn't come to Dayton last year, but that might just be the exception that proves the rule.

Posted by rivka (Member # 4859) on :

Not even close. I'm not going to Billtmas! (Although that one tempts me as well. But Toronto is much more kosher-friendly that SLC. I even have new almost-relatives (my brother's new grandmother-in-law, as well as an aunt&uncle-in-law) there.)

I just like you people. Is that so wrong? [Wink]

That would work! I was actually addressing Kate, but I'd have been pretty surprised/disappointed if you'd wanted to drive seperately when I'd have basically been driving right past your apt.

Let me look at a map this evening and let you know.

If you drive the way I normally do, you'll go straight past the Detroit airport (DTW) on your way northward.

Toledo, maybe? I'll check bus and train schedules.

Who is going this way? Want to pick me up on the way? I'm not in Romulus, but if you're taking 94 (by the airport) to get to Toronto, I'm only a very short detour away.

I love Toronto, went there for a school trip five years ago.

(We should have a NiagaraCon)

It is if it comes from a kosher pizza place. Anchovies are fish, not meat.

OTOH, from anywhere it's disgusting! ewwwww!

Posted by Artemisia Tridentata (Member # 8746) on :

That was an old joke, sorry. Many years ago I dated a not-observant (is that what you would call clueless) girl who found it fun to order a kosher pizza in Italian places. When she didn't get blank stares, she got an anchovie pizza. Actually anchovies can be non-disgusting in some foods if you soak them in milk for a day or two.

I will be, assuming that I'm able to make it. If I do this and there are enough people interested, maybe we could rent a minivan or something and all split the cost of the vehicle and gas.

Posted by Eaquae Legit (Member # 3063) on :

I'm around pretty much all the time in the city, so best weekends would depend largely on everyone else. (Also, right now I am in a netless-unless-I-truck-it-to-the-library situation, so you might not see me around online too much.) Actually, on second thought, the weeks I have midterms are probably a bad idea, but since I'm still not sure which classes I'm in, that's not very helpful. I'll get back to you all on that. [Smile] Not that a weekend which works for everyone else but me shouldn't be chosen, it just means I might not make it to everything.

Teshi, coffee or tea or whatever (including stunted conversation) would be great, and you can email me for contact info if you want.

I don't have much in the way of accomodations except a bit of floor space in my room, but if you aren't too picky...

Posted by KarlEd (Member # 571) on :

Chris and I might be able to come up if it's sometime after the end of Sept. (I'd go with Noemon, but it's probably about the same drive to his house as it is to Toronto.)

Posted by Noemon (Member # 1115) on :

Kate, that might work. Or what about meeting somewhere near the Detroit airport?

A bit of floorspace is all I'd really need for sleeping. I've got a small camping mattress that I'll probably bring, but if there isn't enough room for it that's not a big deal.

Posted by Lyrhawn (Member # 7039) on :

Assuming this works out and I go, and people wanted to meet in the Detroit area, we could probably meet at my house, I'm a 10 minutes north of the airport.

I'm up for the van renting and gas sharing plan.

Posted by twinky (Member # 693) on :

I already have plans the weekend of October 28-29. October 7-8 and October 14-15 are likely to be bad because I probably need to be available in case of disasters at work during the unit startup (we're shut down right now).

Don't plan this thing around me, though -- I can hop up to Toronto pretty much anytime other than those weekends, or down to visit Noemon with similar flexibility. The people coming from furthest afield should have the greatest say in which weekend is chosen.

Posted by kmbboots (Member # 8576) on :

Noemon - I'll look into flights/buses/trains etc. to Detroit and see how they compare to flights to Toronto. Spending time with you is certainly a plus, though!

Posted by Lyrhawn (Member # 7039) on :

Best weekend for me is probably the first weekend of November.

You could burn Guy Fawkes effigys!

Posted by Eaquae Legit (Member # 3063) on :

So if we're looking around the end of October or early November, that gives us a few weekends.

There's 20-22 Oct, 27-29 Oct, 3-5 Nov, and 10-12 Nov, to throw out a few dates. 10-12 November is probably a bad idea, given Remembrance Day and all the subsequent holiday closures of fun stuff.

27-29 Oct and 3-5 Nov are probably the best for me.

Posted by Lyrhawn (Member # 7039) on :

I vote 3-5 November

Posted by kmbboots (Member # 8576) on :

That looks good for me so far.

Posted by breyerchic04 (Member # 6423) on :

Yo, Lyrhawn, if you're planning to travel that weekend, would it be more expensive to go to Bloomington than Toronto? Because I called you for that weekend a while ago [Wink]

Posted by Teshi (Member # 5024) on :

Possibly on one of those weekends I will be unavailable... I shall find out next Wednesday which.

Posted by Raia (Member # 4700) on :

I might very well be interested, btw... keep me in mind for the minivan rental plan for now. I'll see how feasible it is for me to actually do this. But I REALLY want to!

Also, Noemon -- how out of your way would it be to swing through Indiana on your way up? (If not, I can always drive and meet you somewhere, but if we're doing a big minivan roadtrip thing... I dunno. I just don't know exactly what parts of Ohio you were referring to.)

Posted by Noemon (Member # 1115) on :

Where in IN are you, Raia? It would be a bit out of the way--the easiest route for me to take (living in Dayton, OH) would be a straight shot up I75 to 94. Any chance you and other IN people would be interested in meeting me in Dayton (assuming, of course, that we're all able to go and that the gathering ends up happening)?

Posted by Raia (Member # 4700) on :

I go to school in Greencastle, IN. But I could definitely meet you somewhere along the way (Dayton sounds good, though I'd need to figure out where to leave my car). It would be nice to have company for the drive up, too, instead of driving the six hours to Detroit on my own. [Smile]

breyer -

Eh.errr....But Toronto is more fun! ::whines::

Posted by Noemon (Member # 1115) on :

Your car would probably be safe at my place; in the two years I've lived here I've never had it broken into.

Posted by Raia (Member # 4700) on :

Alright then... that might work out! [Smile] Now I just have to check and make sure I can get away that weekend (whatever weekend it ends up being).

Posted by breyerchic04 (Member # 6423) on :

I'd go, and try to make it to Dayton, but the only weekend that resembles working is November 10-12.

Posted by twinky (Member # 693) on :

November 11th is a holiday here -- since it's a Saturday, the actual holiday will probably be on November 13th. I don't know if that makes things worse or better for people, though.

I'm scheduled to be on call for work November 4th-5th, but I could probably swap weekends with a co-worker if this gathering happens that weekend.

Posted by ReikoDemosthenes (Member # 6218) on :

I just talked with my room-mate and I've got some floor space for anyone with a bit of bedding. We can probably take up to two people on our floor.

I am actually here now because I have been wondering what happened to PWEB and came to Hatrack looking for answers.... Anyways, I would gladly go to a gathering of sorts, to at least see the ones I do know and maybe meet some other people.

I came here looking for info on PWEB's crash and then ended up posting because of Taal's engagement/mission post.

Thank you all for the nice welcome. I figure I might as well tell you a bit about myself, and if you choose you may do the same.

I am 25 yrs old and am currently completing my last year of law school at the university of western ontario. Prior to this I completed a degree in math business at the university of waterloo, which is also where i first met EL in person. Due to the large crossover, I know or know of a number of people from this site.

umm.... that about covers me... gonna go back to reading about statutory interpretation.

Okay, I am not available the last weekend of October, whatever that may be. Any other weekend is just fine but please, please, NOT that one!

Posted by Teshi (Member # 5024) on :

Is this idea dead? Or is it just sleeping? Or (worse) is it on hiatus?

It seems like November the 3rd to the 5th (The first weekend of Nov.) is an "okay" for everyone.

I don't have to go anywhere or plan anything, so it's up to those hypothetically coming into town to weigh in on whether such an idea is plausible for them or not.

Posted by HegemonsAcolyte (Member # 1468) on :

I think i killed it by introducing myself and encouraging others to do the same to me..

Posted by Noemon (Member # 1115) on :

One thing that I hadn't considered in planning this was the weather. What kinds of conditions am I likely to find myself driving in between Sarnia and Toronto in early November?

Posted by Lyrhawn (Member # 7039) on :

Cold?

Not much preciptation around here that time of year I don't think.

But it'll be pretty nippy out probably.

Posted by Teshi (Member # 5024) on :

Well, the weather wouldn't be fabulous. It could be cold (Toronto November average is above freezing, but not by much). It might be rainy, although not rainstorm type rain, the more drizzly kind. It's very unlikely, but not impossible, to be snowy.

EDIT: Added the word very. I did snow about a centimetre here last year sometime in November, but I don't think it was so early on. I remember that Hallowe'en was actually quite a lovely autumn weekend.

Posted by Noemon (Member # 1115) on :

Well, cold and rain don't bother me; it was more ice I was concerned with.

Posted by HegemonsAcolyte (Member # 1468) on :

I think around that time of year freezing rain is a definite possibility. Sadly you can't really plan ahead for that since you only find out about it a couple days in advance.

Incidentally, I think that that weekend might be okay for me.

Right now i think i can

Posted by Noemon (Member # 1115) on :

If we were to drive up from Dayton, it would be a 10 hour (or so) drive each way, which means that we'd really only have Saturday on which to hang out. Do the people who were talking about road tripping with me think that that'd be worth it? I'm a bit up in the air about it, myself.

Posted by HegemonsAcolyte (Member # 1468) on :

Well, I am not gonna be road tripping with you, but i still think it's worth it... I can give you a cookie upon arrival.

And i also expect EL to be giving me a cookie. Which i then transfer to you.

Posted by Lyrhawn (Member # 7039) on :

Eh, that's a long time in the car Noeman.

How about everyone drives to Detroit instead, and we just have the event here, that way everyone is compromising...

[Smile]

Posted by HegemonsAcolyte (Member # 1468) on :

umm.... no... not detroit..

can't speak for anyone else, but i know i couldn't make it there *TO is hard enough*... Plus I have a feeling that a lot of the people are already in TO.

Posted by Noemon (Member # 1115) on :

Meh, everyone coming to Dayton is obviously the best compromise. [Wink]

Seriously, though, I could do Detroit pretty easily; that's only about 3.5 hours from here. How are you set for floor space (thinking of sleeping arrangements)?

What about the Toronto contingent though? Would you guys be interested in a trip to Detroit?

Posted by HegemonsAcolyte (Member # 1468) on :

umm... i can't make it to detroit....

as for TO, i am pretty sure i can swing a place to stay there...

... wait, how the hell is Dayton 10 hours form TO? I used to drive from TO to Cincinatti every summer for a good 10 years and it took only 8, and Dayton was like 40 minutes away from Cinci?

Could be longer border times, but from what i have seen it is only about 20-30 minutes more than it used to be.

Posted by Teshi (Member # 5024) on :

Monetary and temporal constraints pretty much prevent me from travelling too far afield. At the moment, Detroit in November is too far afield.

Posted by HegemonsAcolyte (Member # 1468) on :

Teshi, where are you? *sorry, new here*

Posted by Teshi (Member # 5024) on :

Toronto.

Maybe this isn't the best time to do this? Maybe in the Spring?

Posted by HegemonsAcolyte (Member # 1468) on :

seems like TO is just the logical place to do it since most people seem to be from around there. I mean, EL, Rei and you are already there. I am in London.

No idea about everyone else... So far it seems like most can make it, but in Spring Rei *i assume* would be back in BC for the summer.

Posted by ElJay (Member # 6358) on :

The last Toronto gathering was in April 2004. The one before that was two years prior. If y'all did it in Spring, before the end of the school year, it would keep up the every-other year pattern. Plus, I would come. I couldn't come in November, as I'm already traveling the last weekend in October. And I know that y'all want me to be there. [Big Grin] [Wink]

Jake, if we did that, I could fly in to Detroit on a Thursday evening, and maybe kmboots would, too, you could swing through and pick us up, (and anyone else in Detroit who wanted to come, if we rented a minivan so there was room) and then we could continue on to twinky's that evening and stay the night there. Friday morning we'd get up, have breakfast, and head on to Toronto. That way we'd have Friday afternoon, Saturday, and Sunday morning in Toronto, and leave after lunch Sunday. That would break up the drive enough and provide enough company that it wouldn't be horrible.

I'd love to see Teshi, EL, and Rei again, and meet Heg and anyone else who could make it. Naturally, I don't expect you to plan something like this around me, but perhaps those of you who are actually in the area could get together this fall still, but plan something in the Spring to include those of us coming from further afield.

It seems to me that April would usually be a bad thing for most people who are in school because of exams. But I recall it working well the last time.

btw where're you? *just curious*

Posted by ElJay (Member # 6358) on :

I'm in Minneapolis, Minnesota. [Smile]

And we would certainly want to schedule before exams. . . late April worked last time, but there's nothing saying that's when it would have to be again. I'm just saying I could probably come then, which would add one more person to Noemon's potential caravan.

Posted by HegemonsAcolyte (Member # 1468) on :

Yeah... I know that my own exams end Aug 29 *gahh, i hate this school!!!*

Ironically, I wouldn't mind holding it in Minn, assuming i had the money for it.... which i don't... but i was in Minn once, and i liked it a lot. I loved how i could travel for miles and miles in the downtown area without settng foot outdoors.

Posted by rivka (Member # 4859) on :

ElJay, wouldn't we be talking about April 2007?

Anyway, the last two weekends in April look possible for me. Not that I expect anyone to plan around me, either.

Posted by Noemon (Member # 1115) on :

ElJay, that sounds like a really good plan to me. That far from now I could pretty much make any weekend work, and would have time to actually build up enough leave to not have to rush things.

The magic 8-ball says "signs point to yes," but I can't confirm with absolute certainty yet.

As to the plan to have it in the spring, that's all well and good, but there's no reason for us "locals" to refrain from getting together on that account. [Big Grin]

(The last Toronto gathering was spring 2005, not 2004.)

I agree [Smile] . In fact, a 'smaller' thing might be better for November for me because it's looking like I'm going to have to be away from home the two weekends previously and I might actually need to study sometime.

Having it so far in the future makes it easy to plan though- whether it's travel or school you're planning around. Study patterns can be shifted when the need is great enough [Big Grin] .

I said the locals should still get together in the fall. [Razz] I'm just finding a way I get to road trip with Jake and Kate and see all y'all too. [Smile] And yeah, 2005, whatever. [Big Grin]

Glad you liked MN when you were here, Heg. The skyways are pretty neat, but the outdoors isn't that bad, either. [Smile]

I absolutely *love* Minneaoplis/St. Paul, Heg. I've actually been looking for a job there, on and off, since I visited in early July. No luck so far, but I'm keeping an eye on it.

Posted by ReikoDemosthenes (Member # 6218) on :

At the moment I know that nearly any trip off of public transit would be quite difficult for me. But a smaller gathering for now and seeing what the future holds sounds like a plan to me.

Heg, I'm actually not certain where I'll be come spring. So far it's looking like I might remain out here for the summer, depending on where the work is.

Music. Specifically, voice. With a possible double major either in Italian or in romance languages in general. Or art history, but I think I'm veering more and more away from that, at the moment. [Smile]

Linguistics, specifically of The Past. Although I need to do some of The Now, as well.
