The IAU finally named 2003 UB313. No, the name is not Xena, it's Eris. The moon is Dysnomia.

Yeah seriously BOOO!!!!

Greek mythology has gotten PLENTY of planet slots. Why do they have to be so greedy?

Perfect name choice. Well done.

Oh no, are they in trouble now.

I can't wait for Xena AND Gabrielle shows up and kicks their Asteroids.

I was holding out for Persephone, but Eris'll do juuuuust fine.

I kind of wish astronomers could pick a pantheon. At least in English.

All those in favor or renaming Jupiter-_Joxster the Mighty--Raise your hands!

[ROFL]

I'm Joxer the Mighty! No one else is mightier! With Xena as his side-kick, Gabby with her little stick... He's Joxerrrr, Joxer the Mighty!

</supernerd>

Oh wait, I think it's with Gabby as his side-kick, fighting with her little stick. It's been a while!

I think MyrddinFyre brings up an important point. If 2003 UB313 can't put on a quality song and dance number, it doesn't deserve to be named Xena.

Well said.

Hail Eris! All hail Discordia!

Eris' moon also received a formal name: Dysnomia, the daughter of Eris known as the spirit of lawlessness.
Well at least Lucy Lawless got a nod.

But when the SG1 team went to UB313 they ran into those strange crystal critters that ate radio frequencies or something like that.

Pluto is now asteroid number 134340.

Oh, how the mighty (or not-so-mighty) has fallen...

Posted by FlyingCow (Member # 2150) on :

Dwarf planet! Dwarf planet!

(Pluto's very touchy about that... it's sort of a sore spot)

[Angst]

yep, looks like pluto is a bit sore over it

Posted by MightyCow (Member # 9253) on :

Man, that's just so harsh. They could have at least let Pluto keep his name. What's up with the astronomers getting so big for their britches? Next they're going to declare Earth "The Master Planet, Ruler of All Planets. Awesomest Planet in the Universe."

Eris is actually the second name that Dr. Brown proposed...[after]...his wife persuaded him to look for another name, telling him:
What if we have a second child? You’d have to go find another planet.
