I can't get onto a news site here. Anyone have details? Coming on 10/11 (as compared to 9/11) should we panic now, or wait?

From CNN
quote:

NEW YORK (CNN) -- An aircraft has crashed into the middle of a brick highrise residential building on Manhattan's Upper East Side at 72nd Street and York Avenue, police officials said.

The building is located near Rockefeller Center and is very close to the Hudson River. A North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) spokesperson told CNN that it had not been tracking the plane.

There was no word on casualties as firefighters battled the flames that shot up from several windows on the 10th story. The Federal Aviation Administration has said a "general aviation" aircraft had hit the building.

Video from the scene shows at least three apartments in the high rise fully engulfed in flames.

I have a cousin who lives in the tenth floor of some building in that area. I'm going to go look up his addresss.....

That must be the reason for the crowd gathered around the TV here. Hmmm. Judging from the looks on their faces (I can't really see what's showing on the TV) it doesn't look like that big of a deal. I mean, obviously its a pretty big deal, but people don't appear to be fearing for their lives, so I'll assume there's not much danger of it being a nuclear or biological attack deal. [Dont Know]

The address of the building is 524 E. 72nd Street - a 50-story condominium tower built in 1986 and located nearby Sotheby's Auction House. It has 183 apartments, many of which sell for more than $1 million.

For whoever was going to check the address

It sure stopped me for a moment there, but then I saw the picture and noticed that the "breaking news" sign was yellow and small. Guess it's no 10/11. I do hope they come back with more info though, at least about the people involved.

I'm watching what claims to be a live stream from Channel 11 there. They're saying a helicopter, not a plane. And they're also saying the fire is out but are telling people to stay away.

Coords of the building:

40 45' 55.36" N
73 57' 07.93" W

To the top and to the right, you should see the smokestack depected in the image currently on CNN.com.

--j_k, who is glad we've got tinyURL.

Fighter aircraft are being put in the air over several U.S. cities as a precautionary measure, officials tell CNN. Details soon.

Better safe than sorry, I guess.

Sounds like an accident. No claim of responsibility, not a high profile target, not really Al Qaeda's style.

Thanks, BaoQingTian

Turns out my cousin is at 520 W. 43rd St. -- so that is a safe distance away...

And even though there's "no reason to think it's anything but an accident", NORAD has deployed fighters over major U.S. cities "just in case." I think that's intended to reassure everyone.

That, and just in case.

Never hurts to have some F-16s flitting about.

We're still waiting for my father-in-law to check in. He works at Rockefeller U which is on York at the East River. He walks to and from work, so we're kind of concerned. Neither of my in-laws have cell phones.

Plane is a Cirrus SR 20 registered to NY Yankees pitcher Corey Lidle.

This is the plane that was designed with a parachute so that it could float to the ground in the event of an emergency.

I have some friends that live on the Upper East Side near that avenue. I think they are on 58th street, though, so they should be okay.

It's now being reported that Lidle was piloting, and died in the accident.

When I looked at the Google Map, I noticed that the building is right by the water. I am wondering if he knew he was going down and tried to aim for the water and missed. [Frown]

Wow. A Yankee pitcher was killed.

Yikes.

That is my aunt's apartment.

(Edit: No it isn't! I meant her neighborhood, but wrote apartment, because I was thinking about her apartment.. I am losing it, I tell you.)

Holy [edit: dragon droppings]! My Red Sox are being one-upped! One of our pitchers gets cancer, and now one of theirs DIES?!

I blame A-Rod.

(too soon?)

Where have you been for the last year and a half, dude?!

You're back just in time for the Mafia game on sakeriver.

AFK, I suppose. I guess how it happened was I was internetless for awhile and then I just fell out of the Hatrack loop. I don't know if I'm ready to start back up again hardcore with a Mafia game.

(And maybe I was avoiding my 3000th post)

According to this owner's review, the Cirrus SR-22 is nearly death-on-wings as far as ease of flying, and the insurance companies charge as if it were an accident-waiting-to-happen.

He's fine.

I've had it, though - I'm getting my in-laws cell phones.

This story is just too incredible to be believable, had I read it in a novel.

Posted by Elizabeth (Member # 5218) on :

I agree, Ron. It is very eerie.

Woops. I must have missed this thread. I deleted mine.

Here's the most recent CNN story.
