A few weeks ago, some mysterious signs started a big fuss at my school. They were large posters that simply appeared overnight with the words "Do You Deserve To Live? 10/11/2006"

Having very few credit hours this semester and only in one building, I never saw the signs. I ended up hearing about it when our professor brought it up in my Chuck Palahniuk class. We joked that it resembled a Project Mayhem assignment (we'd just finished Fight Club.) One student let us know that his professor had been deputized and was leading an investigation with members of the campus faculty. The general feeling on campus was somewhere between apathy and nervousness, especially following the many incidents of school violence in the news. Mostly, its been a mystery. My english professor and I had joked that perhaps it was a religious organization oblivious to tasteless advertising.

A week ago in the same CP class, we learned that the student in my class who had brought up the investigation had sent an email to the campus newspaper claiming responsibility. He hadn't meant to attach his name but it was rumored that he had unwisely used his school email address.

Today, the date set on the poster, I learned the student had been questioned by the university and then later arrested. Additionally, he has been suspended from university property for two years. Apparently it hadn't just been a scare tactic and some big event had been planned for today. No one knows if it was meant to be humorous or harmful.

Its crazy really. He was one of less than 15 other people in my class with me.

I'm glad nothing happened though. I've been wound up about it for weeks.

That is spooky.

Then again, this has "cry for help" written all over it. "Accidentally" used his school email address? I don't think so.

Wow. Kind of freaky, but it seems like an overreaction, unless the student actually planned violence. Whatever the "big event" was, it wouldn't appear to have been anything illegal, or he should have had worse than just suspension.

If you get any more details, I'd be interested in hearing about it.

Very strange story.

Then again, people continue to astound me with their ability to be stupid.
