There was a thread on here earlier that discussed a new movie about Pan coming out. I looked up Pan, one of the less well known Greek Gods.
Hmmm Heardsmen--I think cows. Created reed flute, kind of like an old time Harmonica.
Then I think of Appollo and his Lute. The farshooter could easily trade in his bow for a Remington, and his lute--to a guitar.
Suddenly I pictured a dark cool desert evening. In front of the cacti fire, a lone cowhand plays a sand lonesome song on his harmonica. His big hat covering the satyr horns, the cowboy boots cover his cloven feet, and everyone who sees him believe his legs to be sheepskin chaps.
In comes the good sherrif, tall, blonde, beautiful to behold, almost glowing. Without a word he joins the music whith his guitar.
Over the distanct ridge, what could be a tribe of indians on horseback, or centaur, creep closer.
They sing the tale of the old man who put a new meaning to lightening draw, of the Eros brothel and the problems Midas had in the Mts of California.
I love this setting. The more I think of it the more of a fit it makes. A part of the world where chaos and order, civilization and fueds fight to see who will rule.

I rather like the idea. But then, I'm writing a short story in which Charon and Dionysus Zagreus still ferry the souls of the dead across the Arizona desert in an RV.

Um, you've never heard of panpipes?
I'd set it in Peru or Bolivia.

When you mention Athena, does anyone else picture a school marm with an attitude?
Peru, Bolivia, even Australia are also great settings, but they don't quite match the mythic American west. Illium Texas is the perfect title for the second book of what is soon becoming a trilogy in my head.

American townships being what they are, there probably is an Ilium, Texas. Possibly even a mis-spelled one.
