Is this for a school assignment?

Frodo: It's a pity Bilbo didn't kill him when he had the chance.
Gandalf: Pity? It was pity that stayed Bilbo's hand. Many that live deserve death.
Some that die deserve life. Can you give it to them, Frodo?
Do not be too eager to deal out death in judgment, fearing for your own safety. Even the very wise cannot see all ends.
My heart tells me that Gollum has some part to play yet, for good or ill before this is over. The pity of Bilbo may rule the fate of many.

what does that have to do with this?

Part of the problem is that Xenocide is really just the first half of the novel. To find out what happens with psuedo-Peter and pseudo-Valentine, read Children of the Mind.

Why do you think a book needs to have one "main idea?"

"Pity? It was pity that stayed his hand. Pity, and Mercy: not to strike without need."

"Deserves it! I daresay he does. Many that live deserve death. And some die that deserve life. Can you give it to them? Then do not be too eager to deal out death in judgment. For even the very wise cannot see all ends. I have not much hope that Gollum can be cured before he dies, but there is a chance of it. And he is bound up with the fate of the Ring. My heart tells me that he has some part to play yet, for good or ill, before the end; and when that comes, the pity of Bilbo may rule the fate of many--yours not least."
