So I've been going around and filling up the many holes in our walls with spackle.
When I paint over it, do I need to paint it with primer first?

You don't need to prime first, but you do need to sand. Figure you know that, but since you didn't mention it, it's best to make sure.

Well it depends what the wall is made of, but if it's your typical timber studs and drywall, it helps to prime first.
Unless you're talking about painting over the filled-up holes only, in which case you probably needn't worry.

Yeah, priming works best. If not the spakle will soak up the paint like a sponge and you'll have to put three or four coats on just to get the holes to match the rest of the wall.

Sometimes you also want to texture - that is if the hole is large enough you may need to make the surface of the spackle look like the rest of the wall. But if they're just little holes that won't matter.
