Fire rainbow spotted over Idaho... the rarest of earth's natural atmospheric phenomena. The event lasted about an hour.

quote:
The arc isn't a rainbow in the traditional sense—it is caused by light passing through wispy, high-altitude cirrus clouds. The sight occurs only when the sun is very high in the sky (more than 58° above the horizon). What's more, the hexagonal ice crystals that make up cirrus clouds must be shaped like thick plates with their faces parallel to the ground.
This is incredibly rare... I would have loved to have seen it in person. That picture is one of the most beautiful things I've ever seen.

How cool! That really is gorgeous.

Sidenote - I was amused by this part of the article:
quote:
This particular arc spanned several hundred square miles of sky and lasted for about an hour, according to the London Daily Mail.
That's an interesting place to get your Idaho news. [Razz]

I could've sworn I've seen something like that before. Since it's incredibly rare, I doubt I'm remembering correctly, but it'd be cool if I am.

Seen in person or seen a picture of? 'Cause that article's from June, and has been linked here at least twice before. [Smile] Very pretty, though.

Oh, oops... I didn't notice how old the article was. I thought it was a more recent thing... my RA from last year e-mailed it to me, but didn't specify on the date. So I just googled it and linked it here.

My boyfriend saw one of those in Colorado this summer. He has some pictures of it that I'm trying to get him to post.
