And my first Woot ever was a Bag O' Crap. Life is good.

Posted by Noemon (Member # 1115) on :

::envious::

I tried to buy a bag of crap earlier today. I got as far as clicking on the stupidly large yellow button before their server crashed. By the time I was able to get back on the sale was over.

Posted by Jhai (Member # 5633) on :

When you get it, will you tell us what's in it?

Pleeeeeeeease? [Smile]

Posted by Chris Bridges (Member # 1138) on :

I will!

Posted by Zeugma (Member # 6636) on :

I got one too!! My first one! I was so excited. [Smile] I screwed up though and only ordered one, so I emailed them and I'm hoping they'll bump the order up to 3. We'll see. [Big Grin]

What fun! [Smile]

So, any hints on obtaining that ever-elusive Bandolier of Carrots? This is the second time I've been at my computer when a BoC came up, but missed out on ordering one because of server overloads.

I still had plenty of fun watching the Woot-Off and trying to get my order in, so I'm not going to be one of those whiners on the Woot forums who think that Woot should add 15235436326 servers just for the BoCs. But I'd still like to increase my chances of getting a Blinged-Out Cabbage someday.

Posted by Chris Bridges (Member # 1138) on :

Not really, other than having all your account info ready and hammering the F5 button over and over... I missed out on previous ones but I happened to reload just as it started, and then it took about 20 minutes of obsessive reloading to get all the way through the process.

Posted by Goody Scrivener (Member # 6742) on :

OH I hate you both!!! (not really, just extremely jealous...) My boss kept pulling me away as I'd get the main page to load, and by the time I could get back to my desk and hit the "I Want One", the servers were too busy again.

Posted by Icarus (Member # 3162) on :

Huh. I haven't had any issues either of the two times I ordered from them. Heck, one of them was on my phone. And both (I think) were during woot-offs.

Posted by TL (Member # 8124) on :

Yeah -- but did you get a Bag o' Crap? That's the holy grail, man.

Posted by MightyCow (Member # 9253) on :

How much is the Bag o' Crap?

Damn, it's marketing genius when you can sell ANYTHING, and have people beating down your door to get it.

If anyone wants a bandoleer of carrots or a pimped out cabbage, send me $25 and I'll hook you up. I might even send you a "naughty zucchini."

Maybe I'll add something like that to my website. I can see the $$$$$ now!

Edit: I was looking at the Woot forums, and someone mentioned playthelamegame.com

I want to punch myself in the face! I can't figure out puzzle 2. [Mad]

WoOt, they changed my order to 3! I guess they sell slots expecting each person to order 3 or something.

The only thing fancy I did was use a wootoff checker during the day so I didn't have to spend my entire day reloading their main page. When the BoC came up, I saw it within seconds of the launch, so I had a good 10 minutes to try to make it through all of the order pages. It's pretty nutso. [Smile]

OH, and I actually had to do it twice, the first time I made it in I forgot to enter the security code from the back of the debit card I was using! I thought for sure I'd missed my chance then. But I got back in and made sure I had the entire order form filled out, and eventually managed to refresh my way to.... crap. [Big Grin]

Haha, what a ridiculous way to spend 10 minutes and $8. I hope I get a saucy necktie. Or maybe one of those anti-static wristbands! [Big Grin]

Posted by Chris Bridges (Member # 1138) on :

Ooh, a story! A story! Tell us a story!

The Bag is $1, with $5 shipping, and you can order up to 3 with the same shipping so it's foolish not to. You won't know what you're gettng until it arrives, which is part of the fun. The last BoC contained things like USB locks, thumbdrives, hideous plastic visors (with flipdown sunglasses), camera bags, cheap plastic toys, etc. At least one person got a RoboDino toy (without the remote) and 3 people each got a (refurbished) 61" TV.

When you said Bag O Crap I got excited until I realised it wasn't real manure.

Do they put the Bag O Crap up randomly or is there something I'm missing when it comes to getting one?

Posted by Zeugma (Member # 6636) on :

Woot.com sells one product a day, sometimes that product is a Bag of Crap, but not in a long time. Occasionally they run a "woot-off", usually a multi-day event where they put up a new product as soon as the current one sells out, often in less than 20 minutes. Every woot-off I've ever seen has included a BoC... so when you see they're holding a woot-off, you can try to keep an eye on the site to see if you can snag a bag within the miniscule window of opportunity. It's sort of like Black Friday in web form. [Smile]

Some people are starting to receive their bags, and two people so far have gotten Nintendo Wiis! The people from Woot had to camp out to get them. [Big Grin]

What people have received so far:

Today's woot looks pretty good. If I didn't already have a divx-capable dvd player, I'd get it.

Posted by rivka (Member # 4859) on :

Does that mean that it is capable of reading CDs with .avi files without conversion?

Posted by mr_porteiro_head (Member # 4644) on :

yup

edit: At least, that's the way ours works. You can burn the .avi or .mpg files to a CD or a DVD and watch them normally.

This isn't actually a new idea. Long before I was gone, my grandfather would buy unlabeled boxes of stuff at auctions. My mother has a lovely set of handpainted china that he got such an auction.

I've been at a live auction where they auctioned off, basically, a box of crap.

But the difference was that at this auction it really was crap.

I missed the BoC in the past Woot-Off, being on my way to Texas for a wedding, but I got one the previous time around. My haul was a camera bag, two useless USB thumbdrive locks, a tiny laptop mouse, and a bag of little plastic undersea creatures. [Smile]

Posted by libertygirl (Member # 8761) on :

Wow this is like the coolest thing ever! I'd never even heard of it lol. Can't wait to hear what's in your bag!!!

The Box!!

Even the dog is curious.

Woot!

For my $6 (I don't think they ever upped my bill to the full $8), I am now the proud owner of 1 Samsonite camera bag, 1 Thermos Unbreakable Pub Glass (unbroken!), and 2 gelicious pens.... but unlike anyone else, I also got a handsome pair of men's work gloves!! Oh woot, how did you know! [Big Grin]

Well that was a lot of fun. I can't wait for the next one. [Smile]

Aww, I missed the 250 gig hard drive for 44$ by about 10 seconds. I'm still hoping for the BOC, but I really needed a scratch disk for some hard core video editing I'm about to get myself into. I seem to vaguely recall a rather large stack of homework I was supposed to do, but I'm sure my AP teacher will recognize that a woot off qualifies for extenuating circumstances.

Posted by Nato (Member # 1448) on :

I got a 250gb drive from woot about a year ago. It was refurb, but hasn't failed me yet. [Smile] I was really hoping for a digital voice recorder tonight, and sure enough, it was the very first item. Of course I forgot to check until 6 minutes after midnight and the wootoff was already onto the second item. Oh well. They seem to sell them once a month, so I'll probably have one by the time next term starts anyway.

Posted by Nato (Member # 1448) on :

Oh, and dante: I'm sure there will not be a BOC up tonight. I talked to one of the wootmen myself a few hours ago.

Posted by Icarus (Member # 3162) on :

But there could be one today. [Smile]

Posted by Nato (Member # 1448) on :

Well, good luck, but he did tell me that there was no bag of crap in this woot-off, so [Dont Know]

Posted by Icarus (Member # 3162) on :

Oh. Well that's not what you said earlier. You just said there wasn't one last night.

Well.

That sucks.

Posted by Icarus (Member # 3162) on :

You know what else sucks? This stupid Lexmark printer that nobody wanted, that's being sold at the same price. That'll be up all morning.

Posted by TheTick (Member # 2883) on :

Really. They should've had that on my way IN to work, not once I'm here.

Posted by Nato (Member # 1448) on :

It's moving a little faster now. I imagine people are waking up and smelling the deals.

But pretty much everybody has a printer already, every company practically gives 'em away so they can keep you buying ink for $30.

Posted by Chris Bridges (Member # 1138) on :

"That'll be up all morning. "

Good! That way I don't have to worry about what gret deals I'm missing during my commute [Smile]

Posted by Nato (Member # 1448) on :

*bump* It's now a Roomba. (But if you don't want a Roomba it'll probably be a few hours before the next change too. The last time they sold this in a Woot-off they had 1500 of them.)

Posted by CaySedai (Member # 6459) on :

iRobot Roomba Discovery SE for $149.99

I don't have that kind of money, and probably wouldn't buy it if I did. But, there's a hilarious blog about someone who got this: Viva La Roombalución!. I literally can't read this without busting into laughter and reading bits out loud to anyone in the room.

The Roombas are going fast. [Wink]

Posted by CaySedai (Member # 6459) on :

Nato's link is awesome - I love knowing the percent.

On the other hand, I'm delaying going to work, hoping that the next item will come up before I go.

Posted by Icarus (Member # 3162) on :

I've already bought two Roombas from woot . . . I can't buy any more!

(Seriously, the Roomba is pretty awesome, though mine is a different model.)

It's at 85% right now, according to the service I'm using (Wootaholics).

Posted by Nato (Member # 1448) on :

I'm telling you, it's all about putting one of those tracker pages in the Firefox sidebar. I've been up all night writing a couple papers and I've got two 19" LCD screens that I bought off of Woot a couple weeks ago. I've had Firefox open in one, doing research and browsing the web with the current Woot in the sidebar, updated every 30 seconds or so.

Pretty nerdy, I know. Heh.

Links to this sort of thing:

I tried all of the services on the wiki until I found two I liked that seemed to work pretty well. The web-based one, which works the best, I just have on it's own tab. The tab itself has the percentage written on it, which is mostly all I need to know. When I have something other than Firefox on top, I just make sure that tab is the selected one, and then the percentage shows up on my taskbar as well. And I can jump to "Buy It" from wootaholics.

I'm sure it's not the only great caching service, but since I tried like a dozen of them, I'm not in a hurry to start trying new things again.

It's all good. [Cool]

24.99 is really good for a dual handset cordless phone system with remote voicemail. But I don't know if I should. Mercifully, it sold out. I'm hanging on with morbid anticipation to see if it will tempt me with a laptop. They've all been going fast. Even the robotic litterbox.

My first Woot purchase

Now the hard part is deciding whether I will really give it to Amanda for Christmas or keep it for myself. [Wink]

Posted by Icarus (Member # 3162) on :

FYI, you can pick up a 2 gig SD card for about $25, that will make it a little less, um, small.

Posted by CaySedai (Member # 6459) on :

Icarus - was that FYI for me? Part of the reason I jumped on this purchase is because my digital camera takes SD cards, so I already have them.

Oh, and I showed Amanda the link and she's like, "It's ugly." That's too bad. [Wink] It may not be pretty, but it will play music. Maybe my "give to Amanda or keep for myself" decision won't be so hard after all.

Posted by Icarus (Member # 3162) on :

Yeah, it was. Glad you already know. [Smile] You might point out (or you might not [Wink] ) that it has like four different-colored face plates to change the color. I honestly didn't get why people were going on and on in the woot forums about how ugly it was, like that really matters. I was very sorely tempted by that one.

Posted by MidnightBlue (Member # 6146) on :

I make it a personal policy never to visit Woot. I'm afraid I might be tempted to buy something.

I don't need anything. I am content with what I have. Logging on to Woot can only change this perception and make me acutely aware of how much stuff I really really need, and will be unhappy without.

Ignorance is blissful for the Tante.

Posted by Icarus (Member # 3162) on :

I'm not unhappy without any of the stuff I decide not to buy, nor would I be unhappy without any of the stuff I do decide to buy, if I didn't get it--the notable exception being, of course, the Bandoleer of Carrots. I realize pretty much everything they sell is a luxury item. It helps that they pretty much never have anything that is the top of its line, so I can always convince myself I don't need whatever it is because it's not really that good. When I end up buying from them, it's typically because they come up with something I've already been thinking I'd like to buy someday, and suddenly there it is for like half of the price. I also really enjoy their sense of humor, and I enjoy reading their forum--though I hardly post.

(I'm not trying to convince you, btw. I'm just rambling like I'm wont to do.)

It's not just Woot. I hate shopping, too, in part for the feeling that I get that I want want want something that, just a few minutes ago, I didn't know existed, or that I had no desire for.

Even grocery shopping will trigger urges in me to buy stuff just because it is there, or novel, rather than because it is stuff that I need.

I'm better off steering clear. You guys go and enjoy without me.

I was tempted by the Polaroid digital, but I have a digital camera (with fewer metgapixels), I hear the Polaroid brand name has been sold and is now a junk brand, and if I buy another digital camera, I want it to be pocket-sized. I've been looking at the community to see the past items every so often, and the only thing that caught my eye was that wooden keyboard. Neat!

(I'm using the woot tracker at Bagsofcrap.com, and the one I'm using--they have like 4--doesn't have the descriptions, so I didn't know what the heck you were talking about at first!)

zgator, during woot-offs they frequently sell off their leftovers, so they might only have ten or twenty of some of these things.

I was in class for the bag of crap. I'm not really interested in anything else as I have just about no money right now.

I asked the guy in charge of their website.

The BOC's always seem to come up when I'm not at the computer. Oh well, I got a nice mp3 player/audio recorder out of this woot-off.

They had 446 of those tape measures, but cheap items like that sell really fast. The Woot-offs are a like a big stress test on the website; they've got thousands of people refreshing like mad whenever it looks like a product is about to sell out. They've got their system upgraded from last year, so that it can handle the load a lot better, but they don't have a way to process credit cards faster than 4 or 5 every second. The processing for the bags of crap can take up to 20 minutes, I guess.

Very interesting. Thanks Nato!

I didn't get it but I tried.

*cry*

I came so close on that bag of crap!!!

Yep, same here.

I *had* a bag-o-crap and was filling out the credit card/shipping information only to learn that those bastidges don't ship to Hawaii. I almost had it delivered to my daughter on the mainland, but didn't.

I'm so disappointed. I only noticed this thread yesterday and have been having so much fun watching for something I might want. [Cry]

*sigh* So close...

Ah, it's a pig-speaker and it sold out before I saw it! I would have bought one for Troll.
(Troll likes pigs.)

I had it. I even got to the final yellow button. But I was delayed because the credit card they had on record, it turns out, is the one I lost last week, which I only discovered after they rejected it, and I had to reinput CC info.

I had been refreshing repeatedly when it came up. I was all over the damn thing, and the page loaded instantly.

[Cry]

Posted by TomDavidson (Member # 124) on :

I made it to the final yellow button, too. But by the time I clicked it, it came back with "there is not enough to complete the order." [Frown]

Posted by Icarus (Member # 3162) on :

I got the "Wait while we see if there's enough stuff" window.

The Woot-Off is back on!

The vacuum cleaner looks lovely; I'd love to get one for my family. But $, $, $...

My mom has one and loves it - she even got it from woot... Yes I have introduced my mom to the wonder that is woot. [Big Grin]

I totally got the Roomba. I've been wanting one forever; my place is too small for a regular vaccuum. Oh, no more sweeping...

Dang! I can't believe I missed the roomba! Last time I looked it was a bluetooth headset [Frown] *grumble*

What's with all the wine today?

Posted by Carrie (Member # 394) on :

No kidding - I like wine, but they can't ship it to AZ, so it's completely useless.

Posted by MightyCow (Member # 9253) on :

Bah! I just missed the random bag of crap!

Curse my metal body, I was too slow!

Posted by MidnightBlue (Member # 6146) on :

What? When? I haven't seen one, and it isn't in the blog!

Posted by MidnightBlue (Member # 6146) on :

Well, it just came up but it sold out while I was trying to figure out how to up my order to three. They made it so you could only order one this time. [Grumble]

Posted by MrSquicky (Member # 1802) on :

I think there may have only been one. It was up for 20 seconds.

Posted by Chris Bridges (Member # 1138) on :

It always defaults to one, you have to change it to three, if you can reload your pages fast enough.

Posted by TheTick (Member # 2883) on :

They simplified it this time, buy one (the only option), get your three craps.

I still missed it.

Yeah, Chris, that was my problem. I was looking for where I could switch it, and by the time I realized you couldn't I had missed it.

I do NOT need another Roomba.

I do NOT need another Roomba.

I do NOT need another Roomba.

You could buy me a Roomba!

*puppy eyes*

I had no difficulty resisting the Roomba. Two is enough for me to have bought.

I wonder if my father would have wanted one for Fathe--

Nope. No more Roombas.

How about this camo phone? Is this not the most ridiculous invention ever?!

And refurbished, to boot.

Single serving coffee thingy.

*want*

::resists more::

Not only is the coffee maker back, the percentage available is going UP.

Buyer's remorse that fast? [Wink]

*WANT*

Well that point became moot fast.

-o-

Actually the percentage thing is probably a glitch. Happens all the time on woot-offs. I saw several of today's items before the previous one had sold out.

I figured. I just thought it was funny.

Woot saved me quite the dilemma with that 42-inch plasma TV. I appreciate it.

Posted by rivka (Member # 4859) on :

It's the second or third one today. Don't worry, I bet there'll be another one. [Wink]

Posted by Icarus (Member # 3162) on :

The previous huge one was a DLP TV. This one was LCD. (The previous LCD was only 20 inches.)

Of course, it was also refurb (r0x0rz!). And my next paycheck won't come until August 31. And I'm going to Las Vegas in July. Details.

Posted by rivka (Member # 4859) on :

I'll take your word for the product details. Like any item I have no interest in, I only notice the details which are bizarre. (Like the camo phone.)

Posted by TomDavidson (Member # 124) on :

I actually own the 42" TV in question. It is as incredibly kewl as you might imagine.

Last Woot Off I didn't resist the Roomba (new). We love it!

This Woot Off I didn't resist the DVR/VCR combo (refurbished). Hopefully I don't regret it.
