I realize they're likely posted elsewhere as well, but please remove the names and phone numbers from your post.

What's your income likely to be, how much experience cooking do you have, and will you have a car? If the last answer is no, you should remove all but the ones immediately accessible to the lines of transportation you need to use.

I pisked houses all in the same town as my college. As for names/numbers I have to go now so if PJ reads this any chance he can do it for me? I wont be back for 90 minutes.

Blayne just meant that he didn't have time right now so if it couldn't wait 90 minutes, Pops would have to do it.

What is your income going to be? Also pay attention to the inclusion or exclusion of things like utilities, cable, phone, etc. If some place has high rent, it might be because it includes those things and would actually be cheaper than some place that looks like it has cheap rent but doesn't include the amenities. Also pay attention to other things like pools, weight rooms, etc. I have pretty cheap apartment in a absolutely fantastic location, but it's just the apartment, no pool or anything. Oh, and also pay attention to the washer/dryer situation. Decide whether or not it's a priority to have one in your apartment or if a laundromat is ok.

k edited out phone numbers, (they were posted online btw) im thinking the 355/mo one the onel that says all utilities. Im geting 2k in lans, 36,00 in bursuries and 2 k for computer loan. I do have a job now that makes probly around 360 a month, one i can finally get into the army that'll be some more money.

Do they do credit checks or anything? Beware evil landlords. The first place I rented was slightly pricier, but it included water and was gated and had parking and a guard and a pool. And they didn't do credit checks, and I didn't need a guarantor for the lease. A lot of students lived there because the management's policy was, "If you can write us a deposit check, you can live here." That was much better than my second place, which had a landlord and a listing agent who were very, very intrusive.

Also, washer/dryer hookups...unless you are able to purchase a washer/dryer, this will do you no good, and on top of that if you buy them, you're responsible if they explode, as far as I know.

I think personally that for a first apartment, a complex with community laundry is the best way to go, not a house/duplex or anything.

Rent is way cheaper in your neck of the woods than in mine.

But I can't help you decide which apartment. I'd have to take a look at the place and the street that it's on before I could decide.

I second that. Best thing you can do is to start visiting places.

You won't find little endearing traits like 6' high ceilings or phantom pee smells in the ads.

Oh and see if you can find any reviews of the places online. Don't base your decision of the reviews because everyone's perception will be different, but if, for example, everyone says that there are a lot of parties there and you don't want a lot of parties ... well, you do the math.

note* these arent actually apartments I think, I think they're ore along the lines of people with a large house and renting out rooms, although I could be mistaken ill have to do exploring tomorrow.

One thing to be careful of is your landlord-tenant act. Where I live, if you share a bathroom and kitchen with your landlord, you are considered a boarder, not a tenant, and you are not covered by the landlord-tenant act. Basically, you can get royally screwed.

Just be careful.

If you are a boarder, then you also want to meet the people that you are boarding with. In close quarters, it can get uncomfortable. I'd rather stay in a crummier room with a nicer family than a nicer room with a bunch of bums. You may also be able to negotiate rent reduction for yard work or snow shoveling.

I'm currently renting a room and it's a fantastic experience. So while there is reason to beware, don't write it off. And I agree with Tante that you should try to meet the people. Your roommates will make a bigger impact on your happiness than the commodities.

I recommend meeting with the landlords/renters to get a feel for their personality and their level of responsibility. My first apartment seemed great and our landlord had promised us additional renovations since we viewed during their restoration (it was a historic home.) None of the additions happened because they went overbudget fixing another house, we were not provided any, much less adequate, heating during the winter, and when we called about a gas leak it took hours for our landlord to arrive.

We have a new apartment which is more expensive but my roommate and I are both comfortable and safe. We have a great relationship with our landlord who is quick to fix any problem from loose doorknobs to broken water pipes.
