In follow-up to this thread I really must acknowledge the excellent work my son has done!

His first report card came back with wonderful scores and comments from his teacher -- all A's and B's except for a C in math -- which is fine by me, as he is really working hard and putting effort into the subject he likes least.

The stupendous thing about his grades is this:

1. He's attending a private parochial school which has very high expectations and that is holding him to a standard of excellence he had not previously experienced in public school . . .

AND

2. He's doing this work without benefit of an IEP or special services.

He really is learning just how competent he is, and that he really can hang with the work.

He brought home a 100% on his history test and 99% on his health test yesterday. And better yet, he's giving himself credit for the hard work he's doing it, and he's learning to like this feeling of doing well and succeeding -- including his hard work and efforts at math. [Cool]

He has come up with a plan of attack for piano practice, so he will resume lessons in December.

And he is still doing exceptionally well at swimming lessons -- and better at picking up after himself, and is trying to be a bit more proactive in standing up for himself, and asking for what he needs.

He, of course, continues to be the same gentle, caring, fn-loving child he's always been -- with the same thoughtful, penetrating questions and ideas about the world around him.

What a great kid!

Yay! You (and he) have done a wonderful thing.

You should both be proud of yourselves, and each other. [Big Grin]

Woohoo! Go Shan Jr! [Smile] [Wink]

That is just great to hear. It's amazing what kids can pull off when they have the right frame of mind.

That's awesome! I was hoping he was doing better. I was a tutor for a while and had some students who hated math and were resistant to any and all teaching methods. It was so great to have one of them come in with a C or a B and just be smiling like they'd won a million bucks because it turned out that I was right, they could do it [Smile] . Glad to hear it sounds like you son is wearing one of those smiles.

Can I tack on a brag about my son? We had an unexpectedly awesome parent-teacher conference last night. We knew he had improved. But both teachers were almost 100% positive, with only a few small things that still need to be worked on.

Considering that a few months ago, we had to have an emergency meeting with the principals and his teachers due to both behavioral and scholastic issues, this was SO nice to hear! I guess the things we set up then (plus consistency, which is SOOOOO important with this kid -- from the time he was an infant) did the trick.
