Interesting. I wonder if he'll take it.

He's busy making Spiderman movies until the end of time, isn't he?

Or, perhaps, my dream will come true: Bruce Campbell as Gandalf.

It's all too hard to hear. [Frown]

Where is MGM to save the day?

Gandalf obliterates Smaug with a bolt from his staff.

"Oh, I'm sorry, did I break your concentration?"

"Whose jewelry is this?"
"It's a ring, baby."
"Whose ring is this?"
"It's Smaug's."
"Who's Smaug?"
"Smaug's dead, baby. Smaug's dead."

On top of MGM's earlier statement that, despite New Line's statement, the issue of PJ and the Hobbit is far from over, here is further hope that PJ will direct the movie:

Well as sad as it makes me, I sure hope their is nothing but delays for the next year in regards to The Hobbit. I would really rather PJ direct since I like the way he does things, rather then hope for somebody to do better but possibly not being able to.

When's the last time we saw a fight like this in the movie biz?

Go Zaentz!

As Lord of the Rings fans mounted a protest following word that New Line had dropped Peter Jackson from consideration as director of The Hobbit and another Lord of the Rings prequel, producer Saul Zaentz has given assurances that Jackson will indeed direct the two films. A German website, Elbenwald.de, posted an interview with Zaentz, who acquired the rights to the works of the late Rings writer, J.R.R. Tolkien, in 1976 (the Saul Zaentz Company owns Tolkien Enterprises), in which Zaentz says, "It will definitely be shot by Peter Jackson. ... Next year The Hobbit rights will fall back to my company. I suppose that Peter will wait because he knows that he will make the best deal with us. And he is fed up with the studios: to get his profit share on the Rings trilogy he had to sue New Line. With us, in contrast, he knows that he will be paid fairly and artistically supported without reservation."

Samuel Jackson as Bilbo:

"If it were not for Bilbo then we very well could have faced dragon fire at Pellinor Field"

Gandalf T. W.

I am saddened that New Line wanted to mess about with the money, it seems greedy when you consider that Jackson made them over a billion dollars. I hope it was just a metodology dispute and not maliciousness.

Is it possible that two competing Hobbits could happen? I suppose the rights purchased are something like "Start By" with a no competition clause. But it would be interesting to see two different takes on the same story back to back, on by Rami and the other by Jackson. Didn't that happen with two different takes on King Aurthur a few years ago? One was First Knight (horrific) and I forget the other...

He's only on board to finish the third one. He's done after that.

If Jackson isn't going to do the movie, I like Raimi as their choice. He's a great director, so we'll see how it goes if he takes the job.

::In a Christopher Walken Cadence::

I got this here Ring.. it's a power ring, you know, magic, invisible, all that **** Thing is, see, you guess the answer to this riddle I got, and you get this ring.

This ring, was on my finger when I strangled my brother, when I came into the smokey mountains 500 years ago... this ring... which lay in river for untold millenia. This ring. This ring, that was forged as the ultimate power ring, one ring to rule them all.

It was cut off the hand of a very bad man who would have used it to cover all the world in darkness. And the human and elves, they'd had enough. They decided to get rid of the ring, (this ring) once and for all, so they went to the top of mount doom. And at the last moment, a human, by the name of isildor, decided he would keep this ring for himself, and he did. And he was killed. And I found the ring, and it drove me mad.. I went up in the mountains, I lived off of raw fish for centuries, and finally you found me, with this ring.

And now, little hobbit, I give this ring to you.

So Zaentz says Jackson will direct the movie once he gets the rights back? Jackson sounded pretty certain that he wouldn't be directing the Hobbit. I'm sure he would have been aware that the rights fell back to Zaentz next year, so wouldn't he have mentioned this in his letter? Or was PJ just trying to not tick New Line off by reminding them that he would get a shot at it next year? Or was he not aware that Zaentz was going to offer him the opportunity to direct it?

I dont think Jackson wants to spend 8 or 9 months waiting around to see what happens.

New Line wants to start SOON, and they need a director now, if they wait too long, Zaentz gets the rights back, but Jackson isn't going to sit on his hands and wait for MGM, New Line and Zaentz to fight it out. He has projects of his own that were already on the front burner before New Line started jerking him around.

I think he's pushing forward with Lovely Bones, which will proably start filming in June or July, and he'll be ready for The Hobbit to film in early 2008, and we'll probably see it Christmas 2009, if Zaentz has his way. Unless MGM can move New Line in the next few weeks, or Jackson can get some sort of assurances from Zaentz, I think Hobbit is back burnered for awhile, assuming New Line doesn't find a replacement in the next couple months.

I don't know what rights Zaentz has to make the movie after New Line starts it next year, if New Line has to stop filming if they don't finish in time, if Zaentz is allowed to make it even after New Line does, etc. Lots of stuff still to be played out.
