So, driving down to the outskirts of Boston today, Nathan and I were listening to Metallica play an entirely acoustic version of Fade to Black live (if you're interested, it's in The Bridge Collection and you can find it on iTunes...and it's amazing).
Anyway.
Right after the Metallica track, there was an unplugged REM track and I thought... what if Metallica did a cover of Shiny Happy People?
Or Losing My Religion?
Of course, that cover will never, ever happen, but it's amusing to think about.
Anyone else?

Actually mph, there are really cool bluegrass tributes to Modest Mouse (Pickin' on Modest Mouse) and Metallica (Fade to Bluegrass). Both By Iron Horse. They are amazing. I have heard bits of a bluegrass tribute to Weezer by crappier bluegrass bands. It's terrible.

There's a whole series of Pickin' on albums. The one I really like is Pickin' on U2.
I've also got a so-so album called Moody Bluegrass.
I've never heard of Fade to Bluegrass. I'll have to check it out.
I'm especially interested in 80s electronica being converted to bluegrass. I think that it could work really well.

Exactly.
In fact, just the other day we rejected that song as one of the ones we wanted to work on. I just cannot sing harmony well enough to do that song justice right now. Although, maybe we could get Beverly and her sister who lives out here to sing that. *ponders*
We performed Howard Jones' "No One Is To Blame" at a bluegrass festival right before we moved.
Once I'm more satisfied with it, I'll have to record it.

I love Del N|McCoury's version of Richard Thompson's "Vincent Black Lightning."
I would really love my favorite band(Donna the Buffalo) do a c\Grateful Dead cover, particularly "Bertha" or "Birdong."
It ain't gonna happen.They resist the comparison to the Dead, even though 85% of their fanbase is aging Deadheads.

And I've heard a bluegrass version of One, the group included Ricky Skaggs I believe. I could swear that true, but I can't find it in my collection at the moment. I might have that confused with Fade to Bluegrass, but I think they are different. *shrug*
On a slight tangent, you should find some Hayseed Dixie stuff. Its country versions of some AC/DC. Really really good too, I might add.

There's a version of Jingle Bells by (I think) the Statler Brothers. The vocals are done in multi-part harmony, long and drawn out and almost sounding like a yodel. Meanwhile, the guitar is furiously fast picking.
I love how it sounds, but I think it's a combination that's probably really hard to actually pull off.
I think that's what I was thinking of when I thought of Oh L'Amour, and you're right, the harmony is very important to making that work.
I'd still love to hear it someday.

Argh! I saw a series of bluegrass albums by a band? Or a bunch of bands? They were all theme-based bluegrass covers: I remember reggae being one. I cannot for the life of me remember the name, but it was always (Something)grass.

I love "I've Just Seen A Face" when done as bluegrass. That was really fun. (We did that a couple of times.)

And there's a local band here that plays 80's electronica/dance music on fiddle, banjo, guitar, and bass. I saw them once. It was fun. They're a little older than I, and quite talented. I forget what they're called, though.

Coverville is very good. I've listened to every show so far. I like his themed shows a lot (six-degrees of coveration, cover stories - all about one artist, and originalvill which plays originals that were made famous by the cover version).
Hayseed Dixie does more than just AC/DC. They also have a Kiss album (Kiss My Grass) and another album that is covers of a bunch of different stuff.
I really like The Supersuckers version of Hey Ya.

I would love Marilyn Manson to do the LDS Primary song "Follow the Prophet." I always thought the music had an Addams Family dissonance about it that is very different then other LDS songs. Plus I think he could nail the lyrics.

Speaking as a member of a cover band, it's always a great feeling when you finally nail a song, when you hear a tune on the radio and think to yourself "We play that song, and we play it well."
An awesome cover would be The Tragically Hip covering Leonard Cohen. The amount of awesome in those covers would blow everyone's mind.

Ok, I've selected about 6 of the podcasts over at Coverville. Pretty good, though most of them aren't my style. But I did find a few diamonds in the rough (Ian Gillian doing 'Lonely Avenue', Foo Fighters doing "Bakers Street", The Virgos doing 'Maybe I'm Amazed', GooGoo Dolls doing 'Give a little bit', and Green Day doing 'I fought the Law') and thats just what I've found so far. I'll definetely keep listening (I'm currently working my way up from 2004.
lem, that cracked me up. The antichrist himself doing an LDS song. Oh the irony. Anyway, that reminded of that Nirvana song, 'Jesus doesn't want me for a sunbeam'. I've always wondered if there was a connection with that song and our LDS song of similar name. I'm sure there must, but I don't know the details.

That reminds me: I remember when I was on my mission thinking there were several songs from The Messiah that would make awesome metal covers. Whenever "He Trusted In God That He Would Deliver Him" or "And He Shall Purify the Sons of Levi" came up, I could almost hear the Metallica or Deep Purple versions of them playing simultaneously in my head.
Maybe I can petition Tenacious D to put them on their next album.

Have you ever heard Michael Jackson's cover of "Come Together"? (It's one of the original songs on his HIStory album.) It's suprisingly good; really full of desperation. You can just see him in a garage somewhere screaming melodically back at his band.
