Good God. No.

It's a Greek neighborhood, and a guy walks into a tailor shop with a pair of torn trousers. The guy behind the counter says, "Euripedes?" The customer nods and says, "Eumenides?"

Ooh, ethnic jokes! I've never seen this one told about anything but Swedes, so I shall share it with you. Two Swedish carpenters are building a house, and every so often one of them will throw away a nail. Pick up nail, inspect, throw away. Pick up nail, inspect, hammer in. Hammer, throw, throw, hammer. Finally the other one says,
"Why are you throwing away half the nails?"
"I throw away the defective ones - they point the wrong way."
"Oh, you idiot - those ones are for the other side of the house!"

I think you are referencing Frasier? I remember the joke from the show.

You don't get the joke or you don't get the reference? I'm assuming it's the latter...

The reference is to the TV show "The Young Ones". It was a wacky 80s British comedy that was shown a *lot* on MTV around 1982-1984. It was mainly about four college roommates (Rick, Vyvyan, Neil and Mike) who lived together in a very dilapidated building. The mice were puppets that were an integral part of the show (the puppets, not the mice).

Some of my favorite YO quotes are:

Vyvyan (punk rocker): "This calls for a rare blend of psychology and extreme violence."

Neil (hippie): "Vegetable rights and peace." also: "Socks aren't vegetables, man, they should be wiped out!"

Rick (nerd, weirdo): "Hands up, who likes me?"

Mike (cool person): "Now this is really big, and I'm not talking about my chopper."

I also liked the singing tomato, when Vyvyan ate the TV, and their appearance on "University Challenge".

<sigh> I was hoping for another Britcom fans lurking out there, since the reference wasn't really that obscure... [Frown]

The show is out on DVD and in reruns on BBC America. It's a bit dated now, and the bands featured are all very 80s (Madness, Dexy's Midnight Runners, Amazulu, etc.), but it's still just bizarre enough to be funny.

Another Britcom that is good is "The Vicar of Dibley". No slapstick or general weirdness, but still very funny. [Smile]

I've heard Mel Brooks use that joke long before "The Young Ones" used it. He probably got it from someone even older.
