What has it been, almost two years? (Is that right?) Shameful, really.

Now, I know that everyone is busy, and some of you have moved far(ther) away, and the last couple times we tried to do this it fizzled out.

But my place is available any of the following Sundays: Dec. 10 or 17 (the 24 and 31 would both be fine with me, but I imagine not for anyone else), Jan. 7, 21, 28. If another location is preferred, I am willing to drive anywhere reasonable. [Wink]

(For those new to the SoCal clump, a Shinda (pl. Shindae) is a SoCallian Hatrack get-together.)

*salutes* We can do probably any of those, after about 2:30 in the afternoon (that time is assuming Rivka's place.) We will do (besides Rivka's place) anyone's house or a public space that does not require anyone to be working for pay for us to be there. We have Sabbath conflicts with making people work on a Sunday. We'll bring the Martinelli's for a toast. [Smile]

Oh. 'Shinda' = 'Died' in Japanese, so I was confused.

Requires a cake, doesn't it?

We have had cakeless Shindae. I've hosted both caked and cakeless varieties.

No, I just figured if it was sitting, it was silly for me to stand.

Ah. Gotcha.

I would like to add that I'm not opposed to cake, by any means. Cake is good. Just not necessary. Okay, not ALWAYS necessary. Okay, not necessary every day.

We aren't available either of the December dates but the January ones might work. We don't really know what our schedule will be like in January because Mike might be going to France for work - we don't know when. We are also planning on getting a puppy around then so that might get in the way of us being able to drive all the way to L.A.
We would be very happy to host at our house but it may be too far for some to drive all the way to San Diego.

Posted by rivka (Member # 4859) on :

I'd be more than willing to drive to San Diego if it meant Alt could join us.

My sense of geography is absolutely dreadful, but isn't it about the same for some of y'all to drive to me or to San Diego?

*goes to consult with Google Maps*

Posted by rivka (Member # 4859) on :

Ok, scratch that. Quite a bit farther.

Regardless, if we're going to manage to get together, SOMEONE is going to have to drive a fair distance, neh? I can only speak for myself, but I'd be ok with being one of the someones. [Wink]

Pfft. I attended my first shinda a couple months after joining Hatrack, and had a great time, even though I wasn't able to stay long.

January seems to be the current consensus. How would you feel about San Diego v. W.L.A.?

Posted by TheGrimace (Member # 9178) on :

obviously LA is preferred, but SD is a potential as well

Posted by saxon75 (Member # 4589) on :

The way my company functions it's quite possible that I won't know whether or not I'm going until the day before. And, once there, it's actually likely that I won't know when I'm returning until the day before. We've had a number of "one-week visits" continue for over a month.

Having said that, they did give me over a month of notice that I might be going, which is a good sign that they're planning ahead this time, and the program I'd be going over there for is much less likely to keep us there long term. Still, I almost certainly won't know before the new year.

Posted by Primal Curve (Member # 3587) on :

My brother is stationed in San Diego, but the wedding will be somewhere around LA, as the bride is from the County of Orange.

Posted by rivka (Member # 4859) on :

So what do you suggest, saxy? We could pick a date, and tentatively make it at y'all's place, with mine as a fallback. Would that be ok?

Primal, O.C. is adjacent to L.A., but there are parts that are almost as far from me as San Diego is.

Just talked to rivka. She has no internet at home at the moment.

So*.

We are to choose a day and all that works for us and let her know, "preferably at least a week in advance if we want food."

First of all, we are most certainly not doing next Sunday at this point. I think Rivka's is the consensus right now, and she's still okay with doing it at her place.

So let's narrow it down to two choices: 21st or 28th. If you can't do either, please tell us when you can. We're probably looking at early evening (sometime between 4:30 and 5:30), if that works for everyone else.

State preference on date, time, and any conflicts. Thank you. Let's work this out so we can party!

We are doing something all day on the 20th, but won't be out late, just might have clingy kids 'cause they're not coming with us the day before, so we have a slight (very slight) preference for the 28th. (If the 21st is better for someone else, it will really be okay if we do that, we'll still make it.) Our only conflict is anything before 4 or a place other than a private home, as already stated. Okay, everyone, your turns!

Posted by TheGrimace (Member # 9178) on :

I'd be up for either I believe.

Just a quick clarification from anyone who has done this before, is this generally something like an informal barbeque (i.e. I'd bring a bunch of shish-kebabs and/or pasta salad and/or tasty desert etc to munch/share) at someone's place (who actually has a place worthy of hosting a party).

Posted by ketchupqueen (Member # 6877) on :

Since it's at rivka's, please don't bring any food or drink that's not certified kosher with a reputable kosher mark, in a sealed container. If you want to bring something, she can let you know what, where to get it, and whether something you want to bring is okay. (I'm bringing Martinelli's sparkling apple cider, which is certified kosher and contains neither meat nor dairy ingredients, and it will be in the sealed bottles, for instance.)

You don't need to bring anything; I'm sure a contribution would be welcome, but I guess my point is "it needs to be kosher, clear it with rivka first or bring something pareve in an original sealed container."

(If you DO want to bring something, here's a list of reliable kosher certs, I think the one that rivka has posted before.)

Seriously, folks, input time.

Posted by Papa Moose (Member # 1992) on :

We have no preference and are good for either of the days listed, Lord willin' and the crick don't rise (Superstation threw up last night, but feels fine today). We just wanna see lots o' folks and celebratify. And while I love seeing rivka, the ketchups and the saxons (and Ladydove, of course, though I haven't seen her post here), it'd be really cool to see Grimace and/or Alt, too.

Well, we just found out that we have Stake Conference on the 28th. And I can't figure out yet what time that will be. But I think the 28th will still work, although the 21st I KNOW we have no other conflicts.

Alas, I am fully booked for January; two birthdays, a trip to the snow and a play. I would love to see you all, so I'll keep looking to see if something gets planned for later in the year. If there is a Shinda sometime in early July or late August, I'd be happy to host and fire-up the water slide.

kq, just got your email. Sorry, neither one of us check this site very often. Anyway, I think evening on a Sunday is a bit difficult for us coming all the way from San Diego. We also just got a puppy so we can't leave him for very long. I'll check with Mike to see what he thinks for sure but that's my initial answer.

Posted by ketchupqueen (Member # 6877) on :

If we do it the 28th, we may be able to do it a little earlier-- 3-ish? Worst case, we do it at 3 and our family is a little late.

But we can only do that on the 28th, not the 21st.

Would that work for you?

Posted by Juliette (Member # 5484) on :

We could probably come earlier in the day (We'd probably want to leave by around 5 or 5:30 at the latest to get back to SD) but only if we can bring the puppy with us because he can't stay alone for more than 3 hours at a time. If we can't bring the pup then maybe one of us will come without the other. We'd like to see you all.
kq - can you pass on the message to rivka that our puppy is very mellow and would probably be sleeping/lying around most of the time.

Posted by ketchupqueen (Member # 6877) on :

I will be happy to.

Posted by ketchupqueen (Member # 6877) on :

She says bring the puppy along, that is fine with her.

So, it looks like we are on for the 28th at 3-ish (I'm sure rivka won't mind if you want to come a little earlier, if you need contact info for her please e-mail me.)

I will send out e-mails to everyone with Rivka's address and other relevant information as the time approaches.

email sent, I'm a little daunted from bringing anything terribly interesting in the way of food (afraid i'll mess up something in the Kosher category) so how's a couple of 2-liters of coke/sprite sound? I just feel bad not bringing anything, but don't want to tread on anyone's religion by bringing the wrong thing (such a canundrum)

Posted by ketchupqueen (Member # 6877) on :

I think a couple of 2-liters would be very appreciated. [Smile] Just make sure they're kosher. Coke and Sprite both are (here's a list of other kosher soda.) You might be better off staying away from "flavored" varieties, though; I know some of them are dairy and I don't know what we'll be eating. My husband will love you forever if you bring Sprite, he loves Sprite. And since neither of us drink caffeine (him for cultural/religious/upbringing reasons, me because I'm nursing a baby) please don't be offended if you bring something with caffeine and we don't drink it. [Smile]

Posted by TheGrimace (Member # 9178) on :

see the trick with bringing caffinated drinks is that if no one else drinks them I'm happy because then it's more for me =p

Posted by ketchupqueen (Member # 6877) on :

[Big Grin] There are plenty of caffeine-drinkers who will be there, so I'm sure you will get a run for your money on the Coke.

[flyby just before leaving work]

Big thanks to kq for staying on top of this, and keeping me up-to-date!

My new modem came, so if I can get the darn thing set up, I may actually show up here on occasion!

A few things.

I'd actually like to call this for 1-ish, if that's ok with everyone. I realize the ketchups can't make it that early, but Shindae are always drop-in-whenever sorts of things. And especially with people coming from far, who have to leave early . . .

Bringing stuff. First of all, thanks. [Smile] Definitely not necessary, but much appreciated. Most national brands of soda, potato chips (plain ones, at least), pretzels, etc. are kosher. Specify a brand and flavor, and I can confirm if it is (probably). As far as sodas, very few are dairy (the only ones I can think of are Coke Blak (which is nasty anyway) and I think one of the Cherry Vanilla mutations. Cherry Coke, Cherry Sprite, Wild Cherry Pepsi are all parve. Besides, no one but me will care anyway if it IS dairy, and I'll just drink something else -- so no biggie.

Oh, and raw fruits and veggies are kosher without any symbols stamped on 'em. [Wink]

Posted by ketchupqueen (Member # 6877) on :

(As long as you don't cut them with your unkosher knife on your unkosher cutting board.)

And we may be able to make it as early as 1 or 1:30, I'm just not sure; it depends what time our SC ends up being. So 1-ish is fine with us. [Smile]

Posted by rivka (Member # 4859) on :

(Preferably not. However, if the knife and board are both used exclusively for fruits and veggies (which health regulations require for such places as supermarkets and such), it is probably not a problem.)

New modem came. Ironically, I don't need it. I just needed the transformer/power cord. gah!

Posted by Juliette (Member # 5484) on :

1-ish is better for us, Rivka. Are you sure it's okay to bring the pup? Everybody else, are you all okay with that? We don't want to be a burden at all.

I'm allergic to dogs, but as I mentioned before, I'll take my meds and be fine in an apartment that usually doesn't have them for a couple of hours. [Smile]

Are we supposed to post? We plan to come, though the number of us who are sick has been wavering between three and four, so there's always the chance of failure. All of our kids will love the puppy as far as we know -- nobody has shown allergic tendencies. Chances are we won't get there until around 2:00, I would guess, but we'll aim for "ASAP." Rivka (capitalized only because it begins the sentence), could you e-mail me with your address and/or directions, and maybe your phone number in case I don't have the current one?

I've been forgetting to ask this question for weeks. oops!

Any allergies or strong food dislikes? (I recall someone in La Familia de Moose y Squirrel doesn't like either cauliflower or broccoli. So no plans to serve either.) Any vegetarians?

I am currently planning to serve cold cuts, salads (none containing jello -- sorry), chips, and veggies. However, except for the latter two items (and drinks), those are changeable.

Posted by ketchupqueen (Member # 6877) on :

We're bringing sparkling cider (four bottles should do it, right?)

Jeff doesn't like cherries. I don't eat raw tomatoes (and I think one of the Moose clan doesn't, either, although I'm not sure.) As long as they're not mixed in I don't mind if you have them, of course (like, on a veggie tray is fine, but please don't put them in a salad if you want me to eat it. Unless they're whole cherry or grape tomatoes, which are easy to avoid and don't leak on other foods.) Jeff also dislikes sweet potatoes, but I have no clue how that would come into play. I am not a fan of bananas, but will eat them if they're in a fruit salad (and the kids love them.) I can't have CoolWhip (probably not a problem) or other non-dairy substitutes, so please warn me if there's one in something (it's a really weird newly developed allergy, sadly.) Oh, and I'm allergic to hazelnuts, too. Other than that, we eat most things.

Posted by rivka (Member # 4859) on :

Does "non-dairy substitutes" include soy and/or rice milk, or only the lovely chemical cocktail kinds?

The only other thing on that list that I was thinking of putting out is tomatoes, and they're little ones for a veggie plate. So shouldn't be a problem.

Posted by ketchupqueen (Member # 6877) on :

Soy and rice milk are fine. It's just the chemical ones that contain no food known to nature. [Smile]

Nope. [Smile]

*bump, just in case anyone wants to come last minute or the Meeses want to answer the question*

Everyone has directions, right?

Pop doesn't like cauliflower. We all like broccoli if it's cooked (some of us might eat it raw). Mooselet and Superstation will eat all cherry or grape tomatoes in sight! Superstation can't have anything with raw egg in it. Other than that I think we are good.

Ok, no raw eggs. That rules out precisely nothing I was planning on. [Wink]

Posted by ketchupqueen (Member # 6877) on :

Yeah, rivka, I don't eat raw eggs, either. [Razz]

Funny thing. Me either.

The rain (which is supposed to get progressively lighter through tomorrow afternoon) isn't going to keep any of y'all away, is it?

I had a really nice time, everyone. Thanks for letting me know about it. So will anyone be posting pictures?

Posted by rivka (Member # 4859) on :

Glad to see you made it home safe. Thanks for making the drive!

And thanks to everyone for coming. [Smile]

The only pictures I have are of the cake . . . and I haven't figured out the whole getting-pictures-from-cell-phone-elsewhere thing.

I think kq took a bunch of pics, and also Mama Squirrel. I wanna see 'em too, please. [Smile]

kq fell asleep in the car and was led in to collapse in bed, waking up to remove items of clothing periodically. She just woke up to brush her teeth and potty and things and then is going back to bed. Pics will be posted tomorrow.

But she managed to post at 2 am? *laugh*

Hope you got a good night's sleep. [Smile]

and they say kq has a "normal" sleep schedule... =p

pretty much ditto on what saxon75 said, it was a very nice time, and thanks for being so friendly and welcoming to a newcomer. And now I feel all proud that PapaMoose declared me real since I held a squoose (pardon my probable misspelling and/or mis-naming of the little one).

also, thanks again to Noemon for being such a nice guy and providing us with a very hatrack-y cake despite his being thousands of miles away [Smile]

Hey! It took at least two of us to declare you real (and I think I happened to "declare" it before Pop did). [Big Grin]

And you spelled Squoose exactly right. [Smile] Watching him and Her Royal Heinzness try to eat each other's noses was wonderful dinner theater. [Wink]

true true, Rivka did state it first, but I have to think Moose's criteria were a little more stringent. I'm pretty sure you declared me real before I even walked through the door, wheras I had to hold a child before Senor Moose would pass judgement.

And yes, I think the infant attempted-gnaw-fest was arguably the highlight of the afternoon, potentially followed by "That's what I do." ahh, the joy of little children...

[Smile] Your welcome, Grimace. Glad it was tasty!

Posted by ketchupqueen (Member # 6877) on :

I think "Hello, Jake. Thank you for the cake!" was at least on the level of "That's what I do!"

Posted by ketchupqueen (Member # 6877) on :

(And I am thinking of recording One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish with a bell or something for a "turn the page" noise and making it available through the Reading Aloud Club so Papa Moose never has to read it again if he doesn't want to, since I think his boys liked hearing me read it. Not to mention for my own sake.)

[Grumble] I can't find the thingy that the memory card goes in to upload the photos. So photos will have to wait until KPC gets home and tells me where in the heck it is.

for all those who care to know, kq definately had the most passionate/animate reading of the book that I've ever heard, and was keeping 3 children and 7 adults more or less rapt through the entire thing. So this recording idea could be a real boon [Smile]

and to be fair, the little ones may have been rapt too, I can't recall whether they were paying attention or just trying to eat each other at the time.

They looked up once in a while. [Wink]

The wonderful cake from Noemon. The babies playing together. The two ketchup kids .

There were a few other pics, but unfortunately they were blurry.

I still can't find the thingy. We'll keep looking.

I realized tonight that I forgot to sing Papa Moose the song he wanted me to sing the first time we met and I promised to learn for him.

Again.

That cake is too funny!

Thanks for sharing all the photos. [Smile]
