Raise your hand if you want the semester to be over!!!

I've got three papers and a final left to go. Two of the papers are due by Wednesday and I haven't started one yet. And instead of working on them, I'm starting threads on Hatrack. Yay procrastination!

I don't have that much left, but I burned out a long time ago.

What I have

Paper due tomorrow (or Thursday, but I'd like to get it over with)
Group paper due Monday.
Finals every day Monday-Thursday of next week
Online review thing that I was supposed to do today, but the file is of a type that apparently doesn't exist, so I can't.

So, not too bad, if I could only make myself care.

Aye, I'm struggling to finish my research paper which is due tomorrow. I've got about 7 pages of 12-15 and oh it's getting harder and harder.

AHG!!!! I'm such a procrastinator I saved all my pre-finals stuff for this week...
2000 word reasearch paper
5 essays
Humanities test
Spanish test
English test
Tons of math h/w
then comes finals week.
yay. : (

man...

i just took my physics lab finale today. very tough. i was suprised since the labs were so easy. i have a calc exam tomorrow, a pol. sci. exam on thursday, and finals for lecture start monday. i will have one each day from mon-wed. so close to being done, and yet this next week and a half is about 40% of my total grade. very stressful.

15-20 page paper due Wednesday, research done, needs to be written
10 pager due next week Wednesday, not even close to being started
Hell Poetry final next Tuesday
Lucretius final next Wednesday
Herodotus final next Thursday

Then... lots of drinking. [Smile]

Raises hand!

Tomorrow: 15 minute philosophy thesis presentation, followed by questions from prof. + classmates
Wednesday: 15+ page Econometrics project due... it's only 40% of our grade for the semester, and I'm still fiddling with data!
Thursday: Philosophy thesis due
Friday: Econometrics project presentation for 15 minutes
Next week: Probabilty & Stats (400-level class) final, Philosophy Senior Seminar Final, 10+ page Advanced Logic Paper due, 4 grad school applications.

Then I get 6 weeks off. And next semester will be much easier - independent study of Philosophy of Econ (400 level), independent study for Economics Senior Honors Thesis, independent study of Advanced Micro (grad text), Decartes to Kant (history of philosophy 200-level), and Probability & Stats II (400-level).

It sounds hard. It will be hard. But it'll be a cakewalk compared to this semester.
Oh, and today I need to write up the syllabis for my philosophy of econ independent study for next semester.

Four finals next week, a 10 page research paper in English (I am about halfway done at this point) and a 10 page conversation analysis due in linguistics. On the analysis I have the transcript typed and part of my analysis done, but need to do some research for it before I can finish.

Busy, busy busy.

Let's not even get into my personal obligations right now - well, let's do it briefly. Three drama performances in the next three weeks at church, my kids choir that I teach is performing one more time this season. A banquet tonight that I was responsible for decorating a table for and one of the dramas is also tonight and I'm not only in the thing, but responsible for making all the costumes. Also this week are 1)and end of the year banquet for my daughter's scholar's bowl team 2) my middle daughter's performance in a play at school and 3)my middle daughter's gymnastics team's Christmas party. All of which I must attend and bring food to.

I've got to learn to say no around the holidays.

1 program to write
2 physics problem assignments, overdue (but won't be docked -- I hope)
1 physics problem assignment yet to be assigned
1 algorithms problem assignment
5 physics lab write ups (she said we could turn em in whenever pretty much, so of course they got left to the last minute)
2 finals -- both are gonna be extraordinarily painful, one's gonna be take home I think, when it comes to math/comp sci and take home is exam is not a good thing.
1 38 page paper on Dark Matter to read and present
1 2 - 4 page paper to write and present -- this'll be the easiest of all my work.

And this is with only two real classes. One Computer Science and one Physics.

Sort of, I'm really sad my group in my poli sci class is going to be broken up. We get along well and talk and joke around and everything. I think that's just because I'm going through a really lonely phase and am searching desperately for anything resembling friendship.

The semester, though. I want that to be over right away, so I can go home and get the real thing.

I am so happy that this semester is almost over. I'm also quite pleased that for the most part I haven't seriouly procrastinated any of my work so I only have one paper left to finish. Of course, it's a 20 page lit review that I haven't started writing and it's due tomorrow, but at least I'm not trying to do it along with five other projects : )

I'm trying to avoid stressing about school by rewatching Buffy.

Well, the presentation last night kind of sucked, but I think I get extra points for my ULTRA DRAMATIC opening. It was on an alternative energy company, and we had to go last, and everybody else had gone on about how much electricity we were using.

So I turned out all the lights and started talking.

The group turned them back on for the stupid slides. I wanted to turn them back off again at the end, but my group did not fully appreciate my flair for theatrics. [Frown]

Today, I put together a new product development presentation...and hopefully spend five hours researching for my marketing plan, since I'm getting paid to do it.

I took my only exam. I think I got a high B on it, or a low A. It depends on how well I guessed at the ones I was having trouble at. Even a low B would be acceptable. I got a 97 and a 100 on the other two exams, so it's not as if a low B will even matter.

I'm finishing up one of my papers to be turned in this afternoon.

Tonight and tomorrow I'll be writing a 12-page paper. I've done the research for it, but I haven't written ONE single, solitary word. Thankfully, it's a research paper, so does not require original thought. *phew* It was originally due today, so I'm very thankful for the extension to Thursday at noon. I needed the time for my OTHER paper.

But Thursday at noon will be my breathe-easy day... I can't wait.

I just wrote my first final and I have two more to write this week, along with a few papers to do this week, as well. Although I may be able to get an extension to Monday for the one paper, which will take off a LOT of the pressure. Then it'll just be one last final in a week or so and plenty of time to study for it.

I don't like this statement, one bit. I've worked in the "real" world, right smack in the corporate rat race, and I'm a full time mother of four kids - a REAL job that never ends - and yet I think that college exam weeks are among the most stressful of times possible.

It's a tad belittling to call us "kids" and talk as if we don't know what real stress is, because we don't work in the "big bad wide world" yet. There is a particular level of stress that comes with finals that isn't comparable to anything I've ever experienced in the real world and I'm certainly old enough and experienced enough to be able to say that fairly confidently.

What's it on?

I kind of put together my presentation for tomorrow night...it's for one of those professors who gives you no guidelines at all just to see what you come up with when you panic and realize that you don't quite know what he expects, like it's an academic Rorschach test. Fortunately, I've had him for something like four of my undergrad classes, so I have a vague idea. But I still don't know what he really wants on a presentation; I've only given one of those for him before, and it was two and a half years ago, and he gave ma a B or B+.

I have to write about a statement Tocqueville made regarding religion and the US ("enthusiastic, almost fierce spirituality such as cannot be found in Europe") using the readings we had as examples. We also have to talk about whether or not the "religious madness" has been the dangerous, irrational phenomenon that Tocqueville feared.

Just got my grade back for the first of my finals. She graded on a range and is going to decide which end to take after assessing all of our stuff together. I got a high B/low A. I'm not too worried, since I have As on everything else in the class, and have been participating both in and out of class.

For my paper, I have 649 of the 1000-1300 words needed. However, all of them are topic sentences. I swear I'm never outlining again.

After that it's just a ton of reading and the tests themselves. I can't wait for it to actually be finals week.

I got excited about my marketing plan again. [Big Grin] I talked to my client, and I called some ad reps, and it just sounds really cool to be like, "I'm with the LSBDC, and I have a client who's interested in..."

They're sending an intern to bring me a media kit. AFter the ad rep offered to meet with me in person, and I declined because I have far too much to do today.

Unfortuately, what I REALLY need to be worried about right now is my international business take-home final, but...it's soooooo boring.

I just had a moment.

I'm writing this letter from St. Bernard to Thomas a Kempis. It's not been going very well. I'm getting about 100 words an hour, and most of those words aren't mine, they're quotes from either person. I've been having a lot of trouble writing anything of substance in my own words.

Well, I just wrote something original, and I stopped, and reread it, and it sounds exactly like something Bernard would say.

It's little moments like this that let me get through the end of the semester.

Ouch! Best get started on that ASAP man. You know people groan when I say that comp sci majors work harder than humanities majors, but it's so fracking true. The comp sci equivalent of a paper is a program. I know people who can pump out papers in a couple of hours. At worst it takes a day or two of hard work, including research, minus procrastination. A program can take weeks of hard work including research and minus procrastination. And what's worse is that we're not usually given quite enough time. And you can't just write it and be done with it. It has to work and not crash.

I wish you luck JTK.

I have 9 pages done of a 10 page conversation transcript and analysis that's due tomorrow morning. Now I'm searching through all my sociolinguistic literature to find some more reasearch I can bring into it to make it longer. I dont' want to just pad the word count, I want there to be some substance to it, I have an A in this class right now and want to keep it and this analysis is 25% of my grade.

It is fun though - we got to pick what we wanted to transcribe and I picked sports talk radio. I think I'm going to pull in some stuff from Deborah Tannen on male conversational style - that should add some weight to the paper and be relevant.

So, my groupmate was going to take all our bits of the paper and put it together so that it actually makes sense and is in some sort of order.

Well, if this is her idea of that, I suddenly understand why I get good grades.

I'm currently redoing. Of course, that implies that she did something other than copy and paste everything into a word file. Which she didn't.

Seems like I'm having it easy compared to most of you people.

I only have four exams to go and two projects I need to finish off.

The thing I'm most stressed out is handling the paperwork to getting my new study plan approved. About a year ago they changed the degree structure in Finnish universities to fit some stupid overall EU formula, and that means I can't finish university with the same study plan I started it. Not that changing my study plan is difficult in itself, it's just paperwork... and I hate paperwork. [Mad]

In an attempt to try to make everyone else feel a little better about their workload, my end-of-semester schedule:
Total page count: 71
Pages completed: 15
Percentage done: ~21%

I'm just looking forward to finishing so I can start writing other papers over the break.

See y'all in a couple more months.

Hehe. The funny thing is, I'm not a CompSci major. This was for a class called "Minds and Machines." I was trying to show how hard subconscious human tasks are to program. Just turned in in, though.

The hardest part was all the vector geometry. To be honest, I'm kind of surprised at how well it turned out [Cool]

How long does it have to be?

Ten pages. I've written five. I shouldn't have too much trouble finishing it, I just have to sit down and make myself do it.

I feel really, really awful, and I don't know why.

I got about 5 or 6 hours of sleep last night, which made it impossible for me to study today until the bright idea of taking a nap occurred to me around 4:30, so I napped until 6, went to dinner, and then started studying again. I still feel awfully exhuasted, though, and I feel like I'm racing against the clock to get all the studying done that I'd planned to do earlier in the day.

Added to that, I'm spiraling into depression about things completly unrelated to finals. And my mom has been emailing me about all these things to do when I'm in town, when I was just looking forward to relaxing and getting the massive amount of not school related work that I've been putting off until break done. So I don't really have anything to look forward to anymore, when the thought that I could go home in 4 days was the only thing getting me through.

I'm sorry to complain. I'm hoping by getting it out there I'll be able to get back to work and get things done.

*hugs for blacwolve* [Frown] I'm sure it'll get better. My mom can be the same way when I get home. I just want to lie around and relax, and she goes all crazy about how I don't do anything but lie around all day...and I'm like, Mom! It's my break! This is ME TIME!

Maybe she's just excited to have you home.

I'm sure she is, she just expresses that excitement by wanting to go on outings and stuff constantly. And I like doing stuff with her, but I rarely get a moment to myself.

So I lied, I returned in my unstructured procrastination.

If by "horrible" you mean "horribly awesome." I'm a philosophy and political science double major (senior) at a small liberal arts college. The philosophy program (currently) requires two semesters of colloquium which is where you spend the semester researching a topic in philosophy (due), present on it, and then finish with a first draft of a paper that could then possibly be revised and polished for publishing. I just happened to end up drawing a later presentation date, so I'm including it in my "finals schedule" (I actually would have liked to do it far earlier). The policy proposal is also actually supposed to be the cumulative of a semester's worth of work, but eh, the rest of school gets in the way. The 10 page final paper is just that, nothing really special.
The 30 page paper, however, is beautiful. It is literally 100% of the grade for the course, which is technically a 300 level history course, however, it was actually a seminar on historiography and the philosophy of mind (with bits of neurobiology, and academic history tossed in). The course read a major book a week (I'm talking books like The Aesthetics of Memesis here, not any random novel) along with major readings in the philosophy of mind. The seminar met once a week for 3 hours, and was entirely amazing. This paper is going to be my crowning achievement of the semester. In fact, as I'm writing this post I just starting another book from the library that looks very promising. I'm writing on building an understanding of how we understand and negotiate structures using the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy as a catalyst, through small vignettes (think Mrs. Bridge).
And once I'm done with the semester, I can start working on papers for conferences in the spring!

(There actually is no sarcasm in this post at all.)

Thirty-nine pages.

Still not finished.

Meeting with the client tomorrow to work out nitpicky details.

What amuses me is that really, this isn't nearly the longest of these kinds of assignments I've had. I think my undergrad music finance midterm ended up being 60 pages, and the final project was 90.

I am going to die. This stupid Lucretius paper isn't writing itself, and it's due at 2! &@*$^$#@*# Lucretius!

3/10 pages, but I can probably drop that to 8.5...

I can't get into my Othello paper either. Which tells me it's typical end of the semester brain fog, because I LIKE Othello.

I have only one final remaining - on Friday and this final paper to do and that's it.

Today, the biggest portion of my Language and Culture class was an essay question - "Describe the differences between prescriptive and descriptive grammar and give illustrations of what the implications are for speakers of African American Vernacular English in public schools."

That's not verbatim, but that was the general gist of the question - definitely one I could wrap my head around and something the professor and I had already talked about at length after class, several times. I read it and looked up at him and grinned and he just smiled back at me, it was almost as if it was designed for me. [Big Grin]

One more final that's worth 40% of my grade. It's for my statistics class, I have about 88% right now and I really, really want to get an A in the class. It's at 8 am tomorrow morning so I have ten more hours to study.

<---Goes back to work.

Update:

The Lucretius paper managed to finish itself, and the ensuing final... wasn't bad! I didn't fail it, and I definitely have a solid B in the class (which is perfectly fine by me. [Smile] )

Last night, I actually studied for the final I have today, which kicks major frakking butt, and it'll be a cake test as well.

I'm almost done, and it's all gone (relatively) well!

Ugh, still not done. Classes are over, but now I have a week to wade through piles and piles of work before finals. This is going to be fuuunnn.

Incidentally, I miss paper writing. I have one paper this semester for the peer mentoring seminar, it's so easy and relaxing compared to all my other work. I just have to write, piece of cake. Sure the ideas need to make sense and come together and such, but doing that's not so hard.

It's so much easier than trying to analyze or write computer algorithms. And a Sunday picnic compared to trying to solve Schrödinger equations.

Page nine. Yes, nine.

Actually, I have about 9.25 pages done, so I'm getting closer. I even think I'm on my last point now, and will soon be able to move onto the conclusion.

I think, counting all the time spent reading source material and researching, I've spent more than 12 hours on this paper. I suppose it's worth it, considering the paper's worth more than 25% of my grade in this course, but when I hear classmates talk about how they just sit down and bang out a 10 page paper in 2 or 3 hours I wonder if I'm no good at this or they're just that much better.

Of course, my grades on my papers are generally higher than theirs, but not that much higher. One person in particular claims she wrote a paper in 1.5 hours that took me more than five - I made an A, she a B. I worked more than 3 times longer and only received one additional letter grade. Frustrating.

Posted by rivka (Member # 4859) on :

Belle, there's a pretty substantive difference between a B paper and an A paper. It makes sense that it would take significantly longer.

In any case, every person works at their own speed, neh?

Just got my grade back on the final I took this morning.

80% That's a solid B for me in my second class this semester. Still haven't gotten the other three back. Looks like my GPA is taking a nosedive.

(I know this sounds stupid, but before this semester I had a 3.95- that is, one B on my transcript. Suddenly, that number has tripled. I don't have that many things going for me, I hoped my GPA would pull me through.)

I just found out that I get to take three of my four classes next semester as independent study.

You have no idea how much I love independent study. I get ridiculously bored in class because everything moves SO SLOWLY that I don't have the attention span for it.

So chances are, classes that would be three hours a week will take me one hour. [Big Grin]

I'm sorry blacwolve. I'm the same - I have one B. In Intermediate Alegebra no less. I ended up acing College Algebra and becoming a math tutor. I was seriously pissed at that B. What's your major?

In other news, I finished today. I think I'll get all A's, but its possible I could end up with 3 B's. That would make me sad, but oddly I would be OK with it because I actually learned quite a bit from the classes I struggled a bit in. In those classes, for the first time learning was a higher priority to sucking up and getting a good grade. It was ... odd.

Posted by Belle (Member # 2314) on :

I'm finished. I still have to take a final in this class tomorrow, but that is no big deal, this paper is worth much more than the final.

I must admit, I'm actually kinda proud of it. Not too bad, considering that getting the darn thing done was like pulling teeth for me.

Posted by blacwolve (Member # 2972) on :

My major is political science. The B's are in two Spanish classes and a undergrad/grad Statistical Quality Control course. I'd sort of like to do something combining statistics and liberal arts in the future (market research, maybe?) so the Statistics particularly bothers me.

I'm DONE!!!!!!!!!!! YAY!!!! I know I got two A's and one B and the other class is either an A or B. Hurray!! Unlike stangelove I'm extremely happy with my intermediate alegebra B [Big Grin]
