Wired reports that Multiverse, a company that provides open source multi-user game platforms for designers to make their own games, will be licensing the rights to a Firefly game from FOX.

Which means that in a few years -- probably not sooner -- you can cancel your World of Warcraft, Star Wars Empires, and Eve Online memberships and come play in the 'verse.

There goes any vestige of free time I'll ever have, ever again...

That is SO cool!

[Cool] See you there.

Why have you forsaken me? I can see it now....a universe full of people trying to spout clever lines.

Grrr.

On the index page, the thread title was shown as "Firefly coming back as...".

You got me all excited for nothing.

Honestly, the universe of Firefly wasn't all that compelling. Not that it was bad -- I think it was a fine backdrop for some great stories.

But was the crew of Firefly and their stories that captured my heart.

I'll pass.

Granted. But there are an awful lot of talented people who have been crafting their own versy stories for a few years now. I want to see what's possible.

It is Star Wars Galaxies not Star Wars Empires.
Sorry, I was in love with the game before it got screwed up. [Blushing]

Sadly, I'm with MPR on this one. Er, not that it's sad that I agree with MPR. You know what I mean.

The writing and the characters were what made Firefly really special... without their involvement, it'll just feel like fanfic to me.

this could be intersting if its free...

You mean, when it launched? [Evil Laugh]

Gotta agree with MPH on this one.

We don't really know anything about the 'verse, and quite frankly, who cares? The fun of the show takes place in one place, on Serenity herself. Last thing I want is to play with thousands of other peoples, all flying identical Fireflys around the rim worlds. There's only so much room on Whitefall and Persephone.

And don't diss Star Wars Galaxies eros, without it, we wouldn't have this little jem.

Fair enough. I'll manage to have fun without you, somehow [Smile]

(Note: We do know a decent amount about the 'verse, by the way. Lots of hints and references scattered through the show and movie, more in the shooting scripts that didn't make it to air, and a ton of info in the Serenity Companion and Firefly Companion, all from Joss.)

I had not seen that before, err thanks I guess.

I guess we could argue about just when SWG got so screwed up it was a completely different game but I have better things to talk about than that like that player run servers that have pre-NGE galaxies on them. If you would like I can find the site for you.

Also Star Wars Galaxies led to the creation of Gamics. Gamics started out with Star Wars Galaxies and in fact is the longest running gamic to date. Nathan the creator is getting ready to start back with gamics after a break for real life.
Note* the forums at the moment, due to a bug, are plagued with spam-bots. So if you do peek in look for: Khil1, X, Agamemnon, and Gamics.

If it wasn't in the show or movie, I haven't seen it. Cool that it's all there though. Glad to see Joss added a lot more richness to the show even after it ended. [Smile]

This redeemed the thread. I question the awesomeness of a Firefly game, as much as I loved the show. That video is straight up awesome.

This will end in pain.

You can adventure right now with the Serenity RPG, but I guess y'all knew that.

"everybody has to have their own story," says Multiverse co-founder and executive producer Corey Bridges.
So the producer is also a "Bridges"??? Got on inside track on this, do ya, Chris? [Wink]

I agree that the characters made the show, so I'm not sure how this will look as a MMO.

I'm not into the whole MMO thing. Leveling up by killing rats in the sewers of Persephone with a six-shooter, surrounded by people with names like MalReynolds, MaLrEyNoLdS, xXxMalxXx, and JAYNE_1990 isn't really my idea of a good time.

I don't know if the intersection of the groups "into Firefly" and "into MMORPGs" will be big enough to sustain one, but I guess we'll find out.

I thought the first game specific comic was the short lived "B0n3d00d and pl4t3d3wd"... Followed by Ima Newbie does Britannia. Did Ima Newbie end?

What about Evercrest?

Hey, killing rats to raise your level as a fighter may not be great, but think about what you have to do as a low level "Companion".

oooh. Any game where I can run into a group of digitally accurate InArra, Inarrras, ENaRa7 etc can't be all bad.

I agree with Christ, the possibilities for this game could quite easily warrant an awesome mmorpg.

Ill keep an interested eye out.

I would much prefer a basic game, not MMO. Perhaps something like KOTOR, but where you can control any character or something.

I don't see how this will be just another game identical to the ones we already see, like SWG, but trying to take advantage of the Firefly branding.

Wow, I didn't know that he had an opinion on video games! Got any references to back that up?

Never heard of those but all other video game comics that I have seen have generally been to make fun of the game. Nathan just uses the universe the game creators made to tell stories and enhance the gameplay.

A single-player RPG written by Joss and voice-acted by the original cast would be wonderful. Too bad it'll never happen. [Frown]

I'd accept a movie or a TV show written by Joss long before a video game. Very different kinds of writing. He should be involved, but ...
