I liked this book. The rest of the series was all downhill from here on, IMO - which was a pity. I'll probably see this movie and skip the other two.

I loved the books, despite Pullman's dim view of the christian God.
I don't think they could have chosen a better cast, as far as the adult characters are concerned... Nicole Kidman as Ms. Coulter looks chillingly beautiful. And capable of anything.

Nicole Kidman as Mrs. Coulter is all wrong. (I am not a fan) I will agree that she(Nicole) is creepy, though. Lyra is all wrong. Cute little girl, but not Lyra. My daughter agrees.
And Puffy Treat? That is spelled Iogi Bear.

Yay! This was a good book and I think it'll be a good movie too. I'm not sure about Lyra, they didn't really say or show much of her on the website. All the other actors seem pretty right I just hope they stick pretty close to the book... (yeah right)

A trailer probably won't turn up until at least the spring of '07. The Daemons and Ice Bears alone will require massive amounts of FX work before they're ready for public viewing.

I googled up a HDM fan site, where (as I'd hoped) someone had looked at the code and found all the combinations. Normally I'd consider it as spoiling others' fun, but as someone could literally be at it for hours:
There is a too great shortage of blimps in the real world. It's a little more steampunk then I imagined, but in my mind that's not a bad thing.

This film has to be awesome as it will be combining His Dark Materials and Nicole Kidman, two of my favourite things.
Anyway, what is wrong with the second book? I can understand people not liking the third one that much, as it did get kind of preachy towards the end, but I thought the second book was the best in the series! I really loved the Mediterranean world with all the ghosts.

I found book two to be very disappointing, both characterization and imagination-wise. And book three to be deathly dull.
And, yes, the dim view Pullman takes of certain things I hold sacred became so blatant and broad in the subsequent books that I found them more difficult to properly digest.

I didn't think his view was dull... It was rather hopeful in my eyes, but my view of spirituality matches his in some ways. I would not have liked it as much when I was younger.

I still like the series in general though, and am looking forward to this movie!

I'm not using the meaning of "dim" that means the same as "dull".
I meant that from book two onward, the complex, morally diverse portrayal of the Christian characters gets replaced by "They believe this only because they're corrupt, evil, stupid, deluded, or a combination of all four."

The alethiometer on the website is awesome, but it's missing a way to tell WHICH of the meanings it means. In the books, I thought the arrow went around a certain number of times depending on which level of meaning it is. That wouldn't be hard to program.

The books didn't really insult anything that I believe, but I agree that in the third book the points Pullman wanted to make got in the way of the story.
I still like the first two books very much and think there is a lot of good stuff even in the third. (Could be because I read the first two books when I was 13 and the third one when I was 20, so the first two have a more special place in my heart.)

I love these books. What's most amazing to me is that they are classed as children's literature. He has a fourth book titled "Lyra's Oxford." This is a short story set before the trilogy. It is a hard cover book with maps and post cards etc. Pullman discribes this as a stepping stone between the trilogy and the next next book.

Mig, I agree! SOme of my favorite literature is labelled young adult or younger. Thank heavens I have no pride or shame, otherwise I would have missed some of the best fantasy writing around.
I am reading this book to my fifth graders. I always read a book above their reading level. They love it, though I know most of them are mainly intrigued by the action, but some are keyed in to the deeper parts.

I love young adult books. They usually have hope. Folks don't just sit there and think, we can't do anything about this situation, so let's give up. No, instead they fight against the bad guy and it's awesome. They face all that danger and fear. I love it.
