I'm amazed. And I'm more qualified to be amazed than average person because I once sculpted a box in Home Economics. It didn't look like a box, but it was. The teacher didn't believe me, but she said it would be accepted as a cloud if I painted it white. Anyway, I applaud your talent, and thank you for sharing it with us.

About how big is the sculpture?
If it's about the size I'm imagining, that's some impressively intricate paint-work.

I'm torn. I think it's really cool, and I know two or three people for whom it would be a great gift, if I don't end up keeping it for myself. If I get it for my current max bid or less, it will be a steal.
On the other hand, it's a beautiful, well-crafted, original work of art, so if I'm outbid, it's no less than Libbie deserves.
Libbie, how long would you say it took you to make her? Is the narwhal idea your own original creation? I've never seen a mermaid like this and really never thought of one that lived in non-tropical waters. What inspired you??

By the way, do you ever do anything with male figures? I'd love a centaur or a matching merman. (Or even a different kind of merman.)
I also collect dragon, phoenix, and griffin figures and the latter two of those three are surprisingly difficult to find.

Aww, thanks! You might do really well. The world of OOAK art doll collectors is a very large but very connected group. As this is my first eBay auction, nobody's ever heard of me before, so it probably will go fairly low until people start seeing my name more.
One extraordinarily awesome artist (literally awesome - check out her web page ) reguarly gets $1000 - $3000 per sculpture, and she does about one a week. It's her full-time job, obviously, and she is deservedly making as much as some doctors make for her art! Yay! I aspire to get to that level ASAP.

Hmmm...it probably took me about 15 hours from building her armature to putting on her hair, which was the very last step. I've been working on her in my spare time, though, so a couple of weeks at least.
The narwhal idea is one I came up with on my own. As far as I know, nobody else has done it. I got the idea by thinking about doing some merpeople who were different from the usual sweet/pretty/colorful type you see. I actually came up with the idea for a pair of hunting Orca merpeople first while following that train of thought (male and female, so I can give them the different dorsal fins that male and female Orcas have!). I started working on my Orca pair, but then the narwhal idea struck me so I started on this one since she was easier than the Orcas will be. I have some other ideas for "mammalian mermaids" that I'll be working on soon...Amazon dolphin (pink!), plus a few more narwhal ones - adults. Maybe even a male!

I haven't yet, but I plan to.
I am of the not particularly humble opinion that I will do the best dang centaurs in the OOAK art doll world, since nobody else sculpting these figures appears to have a good grasp of horse anatomy yet, but I've been sculpting horses for years. So I do have plans for a centaur, if only to totally blow the competition out of the water and get people to pay Faeries in the Attic-style prices for my work.

Interesting! I haven't spent enough time looking to see what's out there. I love animals and have more experience sculpting them than humans, so I'd love to give some of these critters a try. I'm going to be putting together a mailing list soon to announce my fantasy sculptures. If you want, I'll let you know when I get it all arranged, and then you'll at least have first notice when I do something you're interested in!

Did you invent the Narwhal Mermaid? Because what a great idea! and also a sensitively done sculpture- so often fantasy scultures are corny, but this is just beautiful .

Libbie... your sculpture is beautiful and very well done. I especially love the hair and the horn.
I was at a craft fair recently where a lady was making little sculptured people, but her's were more toward the cartoon than the real. At the time, she was making little Santa's.

Larisse - I use a polymer "clay" (it's not technically clay; it's plastic) called ProSculpt. It's a fine-art polymer material that's intended to look flesh-like. It's baked in the oven just like Fimo or Sculpey to set it.

KarlEd, I have a friend that specalizes in griffins although more drawing than sculputure, though she has done some sculpture also.... I'll try to find a link...
