He deserves it if you ask me. He has done a lot for physics. The article doesn't really explain how hes going to space, with his neurogical disorder and all that but it must be safe otherwise I don't see him doing it.
Excerpt
quote: Hawking, 65, has said he hopes to travel on British businessman Richard Branson's Virgin Galactic service, which is scheduled to launch in 2009. The service will charge space tourists about $200,000 (about £100,000) for a two-hour suborbital trip some 87 miles (140 kilometers) above the Earth.
Seriously, he's earned the privelege, and then some. Safe voyages, Hawking!

I bet Branson will give him a discount.
I agree he deserves to go.

I hope he gets to go! That would make me very happy.

That's so cool.

Seriously! Lets get this man into space! Newton never got to ride a roller coaster and its a damned shame, lets not screw this up too!

Yeah, and Einstien never got to detonate an atom bomb either.
Or did he?
Posted by Kwea (Member # 2199) on :
Doubt he would have wanted to....

General: "Just push this big red button to make it launch."
Einstein: "I push it, and it goes kavoom!"

Einstein was a German speaker. That would be "I it push, und it kavoom goes!".

Y'know, "Who Wants to Go to Space?" would make a GREAT game show.

I'm afraid I obtained that distinction only alittle over 3 years ago.
Though if Hawking does indeed replicate the deed going into space I will concede defeat.

Well, that was more than I needed to know, thank you.

This is all a bunch of hooey. He's already been in space. I saw him on Star-Trek TNG.
And if its on Star Trek it must be realer than real.

Silly -- that was just a hologram of him.

Branson is picking up Hawking's tab.
He made a similar offer to Captain*Kirk, WilliamShatner who refused with: They would have to pay me an awful lot of money to risk going up there."
* The Shatner offer was based his role in StarTrek, and how StarTrek has continued to popularize the idea of "going out there."

He spoke English, too.

Quite well. His Yiddish was pretty good also. ( ) Actually, I believe he spoke several other languages fluently. Russian, I think. Maybe French?
