Here we go! The moment has arrived! Jack's coming back! New president! New twists! New turns! How will the next 24 hours be rotten for Jack Bauer?

He's coming back from China, right? Should be a good day, right? Right . . . ? Somebody?

Man, it's fun to just let yourself get excited about something once in a while.

The first four episodes of season 6 have been leaked onto the net and i can tell you that they are exceptionally good. Its like being back in season three when the show was still good. And episode four has the most unbelievable twist you'll ever see. They literally do the one thing you never thought they'd do. Pure genius.

The whole season has been hyped up on the premise that in order to save the world, Jack must die...again.

I've never watched 24 before, but I just watched the first episode, I'm a) immpressed and b) hooked.

However, does anyone want to fill me in on seasons one through five?

I figure I can just wikipedia it, but a few important details would probably be better.

A brief recap of 24, for the unitiated.

NOTHING BUT SPOILERS.

And you want my advice? Don't read this. Just watch the seasons. 24 is the best show EVER. You deserve to get it the way it was made.

But, if you're sure, here goes. This will get you up to speed, but not spoil some of the better moments of the show. For when you go back to watch it again.

But BEWARE. There are big spoilers here.

I'm trying to include the biggest points, along with things I think will prove relevant this season.

Season 1:

Jack Bauer is head of CTU, a counterterroist organization.

David Palmer is a senator running for President.

Jack and CTU receive word that terrorists want to kill David Palmer. Jack goes in to try to stop him.

The terrorists Kidnap Jack's daughter, and, eventually, his wife, to try to control Jack. They want HIM to kill Senator Palmer.

Jack gets loose and rescues his family and saves Senator Palmer, but at the very last moment, discovers his wife has been killed by a mole in CTU.

Season 2:

Jack has quit CTU. He has no desire to work there any more, and is trying to reconnect with his now-alienated daughter.

However, some terroists have some nuclear bombs, and now-President Palmer wants Jack to come back and help.

The large part of the plot here is President Palmer wanting to attack the country they think was behind the Nuclear attack, while Jack tries to avert war.

Oh, and while Jack's daughter tries to get out of LA before the bomb goes off, she finds every possible bit of trouble a person can imagine. She should have just taken the freeway.

Season 3:

Jack is now back at CTU, but he's now addicted to Heroin after going undercover with some bad guys for a long time. When terrorists want to unleash a deadly virus on the US, their only hope is for Jack to bust the guy out of jail who he got addicted to heroin to bring down.

In the meantime, President Palmer is being blackmailed. It seems his brother Wayne (the one who is now President in season 6) had some indiscretions, and a senator wants to uncover it. As President Palmer tries to cover things up, then cover up the cover-ups, things get ugly.

By the time Jack has saved the world, the scandals are bad enough that President Palmer has decided to resign.

Season 4:

It's a while later. Jack's heroin problem has gotten him kicked out of CTU, but he's clean now, and working for the Secretary of Defense for the new President. Oh, and he's seeing the SOD's daughter.

Terrorists kidnap the SOD and his daughter while Jack is at CTU talking with them about "budget issues." Jack plays a key role in saving the pair, and stays on at CTU as the terror attacks escalate.

In the course of the action, the new president is put in a coma, and the vice president takes over. The vice president turns out to be a wimpy, weasly guy, who calls in former President Palmer for help, but takes credit for all of Former President Palmer's decisions.

Among the things he has to do that day, Jack has to raid a chinese embassy. In the course of the raid, a couple of people are killed in the firefight.

By the time Jack has saved the day, the chinese are pissed. They want Jack Bauer. When Vice President Weenie decides to turn Jack over to the Chinese to appease them, former President Palmer calls Jack to warn him.

Jack fakes his own death and goes into hiding.

Season 5:

Jack is forced out of hiding when the only four people who knew he was alive are targeted for assasination, and Jack is framed for it, and it's outed that he's alive.

Amount those killed is former President Palmer.

As Jack tries to track down who really did it, terrorists are trying to stop now-President Weenie from signing an anti-terrrist accord with the Soviet Union.

Now President Weenie and his mildly unstable wife argue a lot over what's right for the nation. She actually thinks former President Palmer was killed because of stuff going on in the white house.

In a shocking twist that right now you're regretting you know about, it turns out President Weenie is Pretend President Weenie, and is actually President Devious Evil Mastermind. He's working together with a secret cabal to start war in the middle east.

Jack figures all of this out, and manages to bring President Devious down. President Devious is publically arrested and humiliated.

However, at the last minute we discover that, in an effort to stop Jack, President Devious had notified the Chinese government Jack was still alive. They Shanghai Jack, and haul him off on the slow boat to China.

Season 6:

Somehow the brother who caused all the scandal that caused President Palmer to resign is now President, and Jack Bauer is back from China.

He's been back for like an hour and 45 minutes, and he's already managed to shave a long beard off, memorize long numbers while being tortured, kill a man with his teeth, escape death, correct mistakes in intelligence given to the president, steal a car, thwart a military assult, blow a man up, and save a trainload of people, all while managing to feel insecure about how competent he is after "all he's been through."

I can't wait for tommorrow night.

Jack Bauer jokes have been around for a while already. I'll try and find a link. I do remember my favorite one:

When Kim Bauer lost her virginity, Jack got it back.

Edit: Found it!

quote:
On a high school math test, Jack Bauer put down "Violence" as every one of the answers. He got an A+ on the test because Jack Bauer solves all his problems with Violence.

I'm even willing to go as far as to say that the Jack Bauer jokes preceded the Chuck Norris jokes. And that the Chuck Norris jokes copied the jack Bauer format and just became more popular.

We even had a thread or two with all the jokes when they first came out.

I liked the first two episodes last night, but there were a couple little 24-isms that I had to laugh at.

#1: It seems like they've given up even pretending that Jack fits into the real-time format any more. CTU ordered an air strike that took 15 minutes to carry out. In that 15 minutes, Jack had a chance to kill a terrorist, break out of his shackles, escape his cell, elude his captors, find a car, have a chat with CTU, wait on hold, chat with the President, type in some coordinates on a convenient GPS device, hotwire the car, drive (in rush hour traffic) to the address given somewhere in one of the biggest and busiest cities in the world, sneak around the house, take out a couple henchmen, break in, negotiate with the house's occupants, expose a mole, and take his ally to safety just before the missiles struck.

I live in a relatively small town, I chose a job relatively close to my home, and I can't drive there at 4 a.m. on a Sunday morning as fast as Jack did all that. He's on the wrong show. He should be on Heroes.

#2. Do I even need to say anything about kicking a terrorist through a subway door at the same moment that he pushes a button and not even getting shrapnel wounds from the bomb? With explosives that impotent, why didn't Jack just tell everyone to step back a couple paces and let the kid have his fun?

I'm just waiting for the moment when Jack Bauer kills a terrorist with the terrorist's own teeth.

Best method of thinning the herd they've found yet. "Killed by Jack" is the ideal way for a minor character to depart, in my book. Especially if he liked them.

*Spoilers*

24 just became a comedy for me. I have never laughed so hard. It is a shame, I really did love the show.

quote:
Jack kills minor character and friend.

Jack gets a call from an informed and concerned boss.

"It's ok Jack, you had no other choice."

"That's what I keep telling myself."

Keeps telling himself?! That whole scene transpired in like 45 seconds. How much drama do they want to fit into each minute?

I actually laughed when Jack said that.

I liked the clever plot of an elaborate series of terrorist attacks for the off chance of getting the president to rescind American tradition of not dealing with terrorists so the only terrorist who can activate the bomb will be released.....especially given that there are 4 other bombs that don't need the nuclear specialist.

One good thing I learned is that you only need to be 10 minutes away from a suitcase nuke to have it not be anything other then a pretty light show. It takes 12 minutes to get to my work. I guess a nuclear explosion can go off at my local Maverick and I will be fine.

Yeah, I'm going to have to invoke the spirit of Penn & Teller and call B.S. on that show last night. When I heard that there was going to be a truly horrifying and unexpected plot twist at the end of hour 4 (as it's been described here, "the most unbelievable twist you'll ever see") a nuke going off in the city was one of the first things I dismissed.

This storyline shows nothing more than desperation on the part of the writers. "We've got to up the ante, but we ran out of interesting ideas 3 seasons ago. Hmmm... nuke L.A.? Yeah, ok..." It's the same sort of "What's the biggest thing ever" thought process that leads to the President being the bad guy, or Captain Kirk meeting God. What's more, it's supposed to up the ante, but releasing a biological weapon in season 3 was considerably more suspensful than the nuke last night.

And as far as killing Curtis goes, we've long since learned that the dramatic heart-wrenching death of a beloved character is just the producers' way of telling us that the actor wanted too much money. It's been at least 3 years since a character's death actually meant anything. Now it's just a time-consuming layoff ritual.

I'm afraid 24 is now just some goofy cartoonishness with a dramatically self-important facade, like a Moore-era James Bond film produced by Merchant Ivory. I think the only way to save the series now is to bring in Mike Nelson for a commentary track.

But then, I'm still watching, so I can't complain too much.

The sad thing is that they don't need to up the ante. Season 1 and 3 were the best seasons. I wish they would get back to their roots and have "real time" be just believable enough to not distract from the story because it is OBVIOUSLY not possible.

I still think the only way for the show to redeem itself is for Jack to go bad or for Jack to be the target of something bad. They need to make it personal on an individual bases.

What we have now is exactly what Baron outlined. Ooohh look at all the blue men on the screen representing death. See audience, there are lots of little blue people!! You should really care about that nuke!!! It is impersonal and patronizing.

Unlike the Baron, I am not invested in watching it. I may see an episode here and there, but it is just too silly.

The direction of the show seems to be to up the ante so they can justify striping the citizens' civil liberties and shock us. So far the strongest character to defend cival rights is a whiny ineffective lawyer. Bah!!

The president should be impeached for giving in to terrorists. Even if there is there is a chance terrorists can make a nuke go off, it is better to not give in instead of making yourself an open target because you bow to force. Plus the president's decision is responsible for the nuke going off.

When the first thing Jack does in a season is shave, and even that's so fast it ruins my willing suspension of disbelief, you know the real-time gimmick isn't going to be taken too seriously.

The suitcase nuke probably did not cause that many casualties, because it went off in a sparsely populated area of the city, an abandoned warehouse where the terrorists were free to do their work. And remember it was only a 1 kiloton device. The main concern will be fallout. But there won't be that much, because it was such a small nuclear device. The really BIG aspect of this is the very idea of a nuclear weapon being detonated on American soil as a hostile act by terrorists.

It is funny how the story line kept undercutting the concerns about preserving civil liberties. The president's sister took a righteous stand, deleting the membership personnel files of the group she served as legal counsel to, and then it turns out that some of those members were in league with the terrorists. And the father who protected his son's friend Ahmed, standing up to the neighbor who wanted to beat him up or worse, discovered that Ahmed actually was a terrorist, who held his family hostage while he was sent on errands for Ahmed. Of course, we knew that the father who was just trying to save his family had to die, after he killed the man who demanded more money before giving the item Ahmed had told him he had to obtain.

The teaser for next Monday's show puzzled me a little. It showed Assad getting away. I thought he was there as the two CTU tac teams rushed in on him--so how was he able to get far enough away to survive the detonation of the nuke in such a short time?

They already did that in Season 2. Again, thank goodness Jack was at least 5 minutes away so he could survive the blast and fallout.

Have you learned nothing about "24 time?" He had plenty of time to get away, acquire some bio weapons to go with the other nukes, plant them, plant a mole in the white house, and have brunch at Dennys.

Edited to add first quote.

If Season 3 was the best season, then I'm a six tailed monkey named Gooboo.

Season 3 had stuff that made Kim and the cougar seem like The Shawshank Redemption.

The President plot meandered all over the place like a goldfish flopping on a kitchen floor. And CTU became Days of Our Lives, with Kim suddenly trying to be a Chloe, with Justin Timerlake as Jack's partner, secretly having a relationship with Kim (Oh, but we can't tell Father!)--man, am I the only one who remembers the baby in CTU?

The best seasons are the ones where the White House plots and the CTU plots are totally tied together--Seasons 2, 4, and to a lesser degree, 5.

Four was great, if you can just suspend disbelief that one remote control can cause all the nuclear reactors in North America to go into meltdown.

But suspending disbelief is the key to enjoying 24 sometimes.

As for how close Jack was to the bomb--Valencia is about 40 miles north of the heart of LA. It's even north of Magic Mountain--remember, when the kid told the Dad where the wherehouse was, he said it would take him about a half an hour to get there.

Agree with you on the "Keep telling myself" line. It's vaugely plausible that he was repeating that to himself over and over for 45 seconds, but thinking about is a distraction that pulls you out of the moment.

On the whole, I enjoyed last night's episode a lot, felt bad for Jack, and can't wait for next week.

This post and Lem's are what I find absurd, particularly this one. Why? Simple. If you were going to call b.s., or refuse to suspend your disbelief, wouldn't you have done so in season 1, when, unable to find something for Jack's wife Terry to do, the writers came up with the soapspectacular amnesia trick, or how about season 2's, "everyone hates Kim except males 18-31 and even they are getting sick of her, what do we do? Let's get a bobcat into the plot!" twist. This show has required you to lease out your brain at times every season, and consistently it makes nearly impossible demands to suspend your disbelief. If you could before, there is absolutely no reason you can't now. This show has always had giant plot holes, ridiculous twists, and mountain upon mountain of impossibilities, to call b.s. right now is to ignore the entire history of the show.

Gonna have to disagree with you there doc. Seasons one and three were by far the best with two trailing slightly behind. Personally I found season four slightly lacklustre and season five was just laughable. How anyone liked a show that killed of the best three characters in it is just wrong. I've watched the show and loved those characters too long than to see them die just for skock value, not one of them even died in a noble way.

We are very much on the same page. Season 2, 4 and 5 were also my favorites. 1 was a fav because it got me into the show, but has paled in comparison at the enemy angle, just not as interesting as the rest of the seasons. Season 3 we are on the same page about with one difference, I thought the second half of season 3 was solid, but the first half, with the drug dealers, was idiotic. Basically the third was the worst in my view, but had a solid second half to make up for the vastly inferior first half product.

Sorry we're not as hip as you, Jay. [Wink]

I just remembered something. Wasn't Kim in Valencia last Jack knew?

You know why they thought they could get away with the amnesia thing? Because it really happened to one of the producers. So he thought it would be realistic, because he'd seen it happen in real life, to himself.

Which just goes to show you that just because things really happen doesn't mean they make good fiction.

You people have ruined my reputation.

So I'm at work and I look over this thread to see if I've truly been missing anything.

I enjoy the Jack Bauer jokes.

Someone else in the office has a problem. The icestorm this weekend meant she missed the new episodes. She wanted to know if anyone had a tape she could borrow.

A little Cut & Paste and I respond, copied to all, that while I had no tape, here is some Jack Bauer to get you through the day.

It was the Jack Bauer jokes.

Now the biggest 24 fans in the company are hunting me down to discuss fanboy details and propose life in Bauerverse.

One proposed raising a gaggle of Bauer-kids to secure peace in the world.

I pointed out the flaw in that tactic. How many teachers would be needed, on a daily basis, in order to teach a classroom full of Bauers? We have a teacher shortage as it is. No use killing them off in droves.

He answered, duh, you only need one teacher --Jack Bauer.

I replied, yeah, but then how many kids would survive until graduation?

Posted by Wowbagger the Infinitely Prolonged (Member # 7476) on :

On the other hand that would be one well behaved class. All it would take is for one kid to go to detention, word travels pretty fast.

Student: You're hurting me.

Jack: Trust me, I'm not

I'm with docmagik and graywolfe on the seasons. If you think season 3 is the best, then I can't really let your opinion make me feel guilty about loving season 6 so far.

I actually had a minor problem with season 5 for the same reason. Any time you're dealing with something airborn (virus, nerve gas) and trying to 'beat it' somewhere...puh-lease. And the Tony/Michelle thing? I was pissed that they marched out and shot Chapelle in the head without so much as a "Maybe there's another way..." and then Tony ruined the whole operation going for Michelle. Who I don't much like anyway. Oh yeah, and when she called Tony to say she was 'immune' to the deadly virus, I just had to roll my eyes. [Smile] Yeah, there are all sorts of problems with season 3 (including all the ones you mentioned, doc.)

I love 2, 4, and 5, but I also really loved season 1. There was just something about Jack being so emotionally involved that made it terribly exciting for me. I just wanted to make him some soup and tell him everything was going to be ok. He wasn't such a superman then, just a guy doing his job, trying to save his family. He seemed tired, stressed, worried, and we were actually scared that he wouldn't be able to save them. Now, we're sure that once Jack knows, he'll fix it. I miss the old insecurity sometimes.

That said, I can't get completely on board with season 1 because of the terrible ending.

In short, I enjoyed the premiere. I was cramming season 5 as well this weekend, so I'll always have the middle of season 5 all mixed up with the premiere of season 6 in my head. It was a Jack Bauer weekend.

D--d-d-don't like Michelle?

Blasphemy!

There is no woman this season who compares to Michelle.

If you like insecurity with Jack, it looks like this may be the season for you!

And how much harder he is going to take it when the inevitable twist comes that the guy he saved by killing Curtis probably should have been killed after all?

Reiko Aylsworth (sp?) is a really cold actress. I never could buy her love for Tony, her commitment to the cause. Tony was so warm and so convincing, and she was like a block of marble.

That said, the only other female I've come to like is Kim Raver as Audrey. It took a while for me to like her because I was irritated that Jack had a girlfriend at the beginning of the fourth season. But I love her father and I've come to really enjoy her too.

But, I do agree with you about the Curtis twist. I'm expecting Assad to go crazy and blow somebody up at any moment. Poor Jack. I just love him.

I still think that somehow, Curtis isn't dead. They never actually stated that he is, and his body wasn't shown. It leaves room for him to make a miraculous recovery later in the season. Tony got shot in the neck also, and he came out okay.

Hey, I've found Audrey's fan!

Just kidding. We're not big fans of Audrey here. My wife absolutely can't stand her.

She would, however, wholeheartedly endorse your support for Tony.

The way Tony went out like a punk was the biggest mistake the series ever made. Especially after the way he came in during season 4 was was one of the best moments of the series.

_________

As for tonight--

Wow.

Who would have believed that bluetooth boy was Jack's Brother?

Anybody who just recently watched season 5 have thoughts on that? I got it, but have only watched the "prequel" movie, so it's been a year since I saw him trapsing about ordering President Devious around.

And I daresay the previews for next weeks show are giving too much away. I think we saw a peice of every scene in the next episode that features Jack. I'm certain the last scene in the commercial is going to be part of the last scene of the next episode.

Although last week's preview at least managed to hide who bluetooth boy really was.

I just can't believe Jack's dad is Rolo Tamasi. [Eek!] Does that mean he's related to Guy Pearce?

I was really hoping they'd use his real dad... That would have been some quality TV.

I know! I've come to really appreciate Donald Sutherland. [Smile] They put him on Commander in Chief instead. erg.

Bluetooth boy's reveal was fantastically surprising and twisty for me since I just finished Day 5 last week. How many times did he ask President Logan if Jack had been "taken care of" again? Oooh. This puts the fun back in dysfunctional in a big way! Gray's wife has a crush on Jack, Gray's son may even BE Jack's son, and Gray has tried and failed to kill Jack no less than 5 times. Fantastic!

What are you talking about? He's Zefram Cochrane.

Maybe Jack has been stealing the keys to his dad's warp drive for the past 5 years. That would explain how he's able to drive so fast in L.A. traffic.

Donald Sutherland was a great idea. The part may even have been written for him. But I don't know if 24 could have afforded him.

And anyway, Pixiest, since when did you start watching the previews for the next week's show? Whenever I regret watching a preview for the next week's show, I always mutter, "Should have done like the Pixiest . . ."

doc: just started this year. I need to go back to not watching the scenes. Stupid Me.

What on this page could possibly be causing Google to pop up with L Word ads?

It's not like the people in this thread didn't spoil it anyways [Wink] .

I actually specifically avoided mentioning what the last scene in the preveiw was, just in case you were reading this. It's the twist next week that I wish I didn't know about.

Okay, so here is are my predictions/wishes for the rest of the season:

The terrorist being flown out to Washington DC, the one Jack killed Curtis to save, is going to turn out to still be a terrorist. He's going to create a bad, bad situation at the White House.

And since Jack Bauer can't get out to DC in time to set things right, that leaves only one man to save the day on the East Coast:

Agent Aaron Peirce. He will emerge in the coolest debut of a character in a season since Tony's season 4 debut.

Man, that would be some good TV.

I also think Chloe's husband has ultierior motives for working at CTU, although I'd really like to see that card held until next season. There has to be at least some continuity between seasons for this stuff to matter when they reveal it.

I also sincerely hope they find a cooler way for Jack to find out about what happened last season with his brother than just have his brother have one of those, "I'm so sure I'm about to kill you that I'm willing to reveal the entire evil plan," moments.

And I still have my wish from last season that it turns out that the little cabal his brother belongs to was responsible for a lot of the stuff in prior seasons as well, particularly the downing of Air Force One that brought Logan to power.

What about you folks?

Okay, here's how my predictions for last night should have went:

I predict nothing much is going to happen until the last, say, 15 minutes, where barely enough will happen to want to tune back in next week.

I love the show, but man.

So, what's the verdict?

Is Jack's brother dead?

Is anybody still watching this?

Not that I blame anybody after last week's yawn-fest . . .

Posted by The Pixiest (Member # 1863) on :

I watched it. I think Gray is dead.

This show doesn't seem to be able to shock me anymore...

I'm gonna keep watching it though.

I saw the Morris thing coming a mile away. My gf and I called it the week before. The setup was a bit contrived for getting him out of CTU, too. If Milo didn't want Morris to know about his brother before the picture was done, he certainly wouldn't have told Chloe. He'd have just kept it to himself, then said "I just got this in" after the picture was completed.

Writers fell down on that one, in my mind.

This week's episode wasn't as good as previous weeks, but I've come to expect a mid-season lull at this point. It's what turned me off to Season 3 (I stopped watching mid season). I know the end of the year will be better, so I'll push on.

I thought the episode was pretty good, though the "twists" were all really obvious I thought. Both Morris and Jack's dad.

I also thought Gray's death was a bit weak. He was like the head honcho last season! What a pitiful way to go. And the worst part is Jack didn't get to do it himself! [Smile]

Posted by FlyingCow (Member # 2150) on :

It also bothered me that the drugs were left out for the dad to get at them. The technician had been cleaning everything up, no? Seemed pretty weak.

But again, I sort of expect a dip in the quality after the first third of the season, with the quality ramping up again in the home stretch.

Wasn't Kim in the cave being chased by mountain lions at around this part of one of the seasons?

I'm with Strider. If that was the end of Graem, that was a HUGE waste of possibilities. So much could have happened . . .

24 Hour Pizza Delivery.

This is why YouTube rocks.

Is anybody still watching this, or has Heroes taken over?

It got kind of dull there for a few episodes, but I thought the last couple of episodes picked back up.

I've seen that before, and I remember my friend part being the cougar, and how we're reminded of him in the final shots.

I haven't watched this season since episode 3 or 4 because it was too silly. Anything interesting going on?

Posted by Strider (Member # 1807) on :

24 really hasn't been doing it for me this year. Some of the episodes are down right annoying and frustrating. BUT...it's still good enough that I'm watching it.

I'm glad Brady didn't die. The show has a bad habit of killing off anyone and everyone who helps Jack.
