The Political Compass

This questionnaire has serious flaws (like any 'what are you' questionnaires) but is interesting to play with. It certainly beats the usual left-right scale though.

It landed me in the Social Libertarian Economic Right; the fourth quadrant of the chart (where I would have thought).

You don't have to post your results.

Edit: But if you do, and there are enough coordinates, I might be able to graph them. It might be an interesting statistical study, and we could settle those arguments over whether Hatrack is liberal etc. On the other hand, it might be creepy. Please discuss.

Ok, I'll come clean with my numbers:

Economic right, social libertarian.

We've discussed this here before. The compass lands almost everyone in a libertarian category.

Sorry, I searched but didn't find a thread discussing it.

Do you remember what it was called?

Edit: A more thorough search revealed The Semanatics of Liberal Vs. Conservative, No conservatives and no liberals allowed in this thread., The World's Smallest Political Quiz

I might have had a slightly different score if there was a neutral category. I had to pick an agree or disagree several times when I really would have prefered something in between.

Same here. Something neutral, or a possibility precluded by the wording of the question.

Euripides- The hatrack search engine is notorius for being awful. I just spent a long time searching for the hug thread and couldn't find it, although I found several on Hugh Laurie.

I wasn't faulting you for posting it, I just wanted to make sure everyone was aware that it was biased.

I believe it's The World's Smallest Political Quiz that has a libertarian bias, not The Political Compass.

The Political Compass is reputed to have a Libertarian bias. The source code is not available, so it can't be verified that way. Hence the Political Survey linked above.

So, no interest in a Hatrack graph? Perhaps if we use the second questionnaire?

No offence taken. Like most people I like to avoid redundant posting, is all.

I've had so many of my own difficulties with the search engine that I don't blame others for not finding things.

Also, I think a lot of the time it was best that the original thread stay dead, and I'm very upset when someone brings it back to post something that could have very well been its own thread. I remember a time recently in particular when an old, very acrimonious thread I'd been involved in was resurrected to post a semi-related bit of news. I didn't appreciate living again through a fight that had taken me a long time to get over originally.

Which is really just a semi-related rant that I've never been able to use, so sorry.

Fascnating. Great link Euripides, I'd not seen it before. Apparently I am somewhere between Nelson Mandela, Ghandi and the Dalai Lama:

Economic Left/Right: -4.25
Social Libertarian/Authoritarian: -4.92

So, two terrorists and a religous agitator. My TSA file will be flagged and I'll be carted off to Gitmo next time I try and enter the US of A.....

I believe that puts me further left than anyone in the thread. While I'm certainly a social libertarian, I definitely have an authoritarian bent in other areas. These quizzes usually peg me as a liberal authoritarian -- actually, I may have some old results in a couple of those links. I'll check later. Anyway, specifying social libertarianism separately is probably more accurate.

I tried taking it, but couldn't even get started. The first question was:
quote:
If economic globalisation is inevitable, it should primarily serve humanity rather than the interests of trans-national corporations.
What's that about? It starts with a premise that is ridiculous on the face of it, and then asks whether we should be slaves to "society" or corporations.

No thanks, I prefer not to serve.

That's fine. That was one of the questions that bugged me too; 'Are you an idealistic socialist philanthrope or a greedy unprincipled capitalist?'

Posted by Tarrsk (Member # 332) on :

Economic Left/Right: -3.50
Social Libertarian/Authoritarian: -6.00

I'm surprised I wasn't placed further left/libertarian than I was. I must be feeling sick or something. [Wink]

This thing is inherently flawed. Too many of the questions fail to separate what I think is moral/good from what I think the government should do.

From Euripides' survey:
1 left/right -2.5434 (-0.1531)
2 pragmatism +2.5075 (+0.1509)

Posted by Lyrhawn (Member # 7039) on :

Economic Left/Right: -2.75
Social Libertarian/Authoritarian: -4.41

I think it was a fatally flawed in a lot of ways too, but it's just a quiz. Since these quizzes usually try to tell me what astrological sign is my soul mate, I don't expect much out of a political affiliation quiz.

From the same quiz two years ago (almost to the day):
quote:
Economic Left/Right: -5.13
Social Libertarian/Authoritarian: -3.33

Posted by Avatar300 (Member # 5108) on :

From the second survey I scored:
1 left/right +0.5651 (+0.0340)
2 pragmatism +8.5311 (+0.5135)

Has anyone taken the Moral Politics test?

For inspiration for people here, I witnessed this at a different forum, which did actually make a chart.
The thread is at http://flare.solareclipse.net/ultimatebb.php/topic/11/1454.html#000000
and the picture is at http://mucous.googlepages.com/flarepol2006.png

I'm using the same nick with a score of
Economic Left/Right: -5.63
Social Libertarian/Authoritarian: -3.18

Edit for Tom: Do you have to register to see the images? Try the new link.

Any quiz that has Lisa as a Bill Clinton voting Liberal and me as a social Republican needs to get its head reexamined.

The Moral Politics quiz pegged me fairly accurately, although I seem to be the only one who thought so.

My political compass: -3.63, -4.10.
No wonder I'm so often silently agreeing with Lyrhawn. [Wave]
