Alright I have now installed vista on my desktop, everything is confusing, and bright and shiny
Now to test to see which games still work. 0.o

3 Ghz Intel CPU with hyper threading, 1 GB RAM 266mhz (DIE MDG.ca DIE AND BURN IN HELL), ATI (or shall I say AMD) X850XT Radeon 256 MB(?).
150 GB Harddrive, 1 DVD-/+RW drive.
6 or so USB ports, 1 floppy drive and 1 non dedicated soundcard and a standard network drive.
Mobo is a D915Gav

I'm getting a free upgrade to Vista Business in a few weeks since it's the version that corresponds with my current XP Professional. If I don't like it, I can always go back.
Should be able to handle Vista flawlessly. :3

A friend of mine just upgraded to Vista. He said that there is so much DRM software running in the background, it hogs memory like crazy.

While Vista IS a memory hog, my own testing suggests that it has little to do with "DRM software." Although the presence of the latter is unfortunate.

My school actually sent me 3 notices not to get Vista yet (something about virus protection software not fully working). Not that it matters as much to me; I doubt my old PC could handle Vista.

I've had something better than Vista for nearly two years now in the form of Mac OSX Tiger, but it was nice seeing Microsoft take Apple's lead and copy all their stuff for Vista. Too bad they did it so poorly. Now I get to look forward to Leopard's release this spring, on time, I can't fathom a situation in which it doesn't blow vista away.

Yeah, shiny means I won't get it until I have to. I still use W2k pro for that reason.

That's kind of an incredibly dumb reason, seeing as all of both XP and Vista's cosmetic features can be disabled.

Tom, it's not that I can't make it DO something, it's just that I have to dig for it. Options/settings aren't in the same places.
We use XP at work, but we're so locked down that I can't learn how to manage a computer under XP.

1) Format a FAT32 partition bigger than 32GB 2) Not use Windows Activation (and have to reactivate when changing hardware)
The second is probably the restriction which annoys me (and comes up) the most. Although the first is sorta (but not too) annoying since its easier to share a FAT32 partition between Linux and XP than NTFS between the two. Of course you can always create the partition in Linux.
Oh, I guess there's a third.

The first computer I used was a mixture of Windows 3.1 and DOS.
I remember my mind being blown by Win95. Those were good times.

First computer I every played with was a 386 machine with 4 megabytes of RAM. Dad installed win3.1 on it.
First games I played on it were:
Reader Rabbit The original SimCity (Dad says he got it free with TurboTax one year) Outnumbered (my parents the learning games, you see) Captain Comic (a platformer)
et cetera.
We brought that machine out a couple of years ago and played with it. That's when I finally beat Captain Comic. It's now in a box at home, but still fully functioning (though the clock is slow).
Good times.

Y'know, my (XP) laptop actually came with its hard disk in two 50GB FAT32 partitions, so I guess there has to be some way it can be done. Don't ask me why Acer is formatting its notebook hard drives in a configuration that the majority of its users probably don't want.
I *do* feel some indignation that MS wants around $150 for the UPGRADE version of its software. (Unless you go for the basic version, in which case, if you have XP, why are you bothering... And it's still around $100!) And that most of what I'm hearing about it are "flashier GUI, cumbersome DRM, lost my IE Favorites, demanded I reformat my hard drive"...
Well, I've already said I don't see any reason that I'd want to rush into this one.

maybe my version of Windows XP is less picky than others, but I've changed just about everything but the motherboard and processor and never had to reactivate.
I'll likely upgrade to Vista eventually, but I plan to wait at least 6 months or more. Right now I'm spending all my money on my new house...so I don't want to spend it on something I don't need...and I don't need Vista. That being said, if I had the spare money right now I would get it.
