You've seen this game before, so you should know the rules. Vote for one +2 and two -2s per day. If you would like, you can use your +2 to add a movie to the list, but dead movies cannot be revived.

Here is the problem. While I like Apocalypse Now, I like Platoon better, but I like Gallipoli the most. So, I guess I'm going to have to burn points [Frown]

Now that I think about it, Three Kings did not suck. Oh, well

Alright, updated list. Added movies start at 10, and can be voted up from there. Apologies for good movies that have been left out. To be honest, I've never seen Apocalypse Now, which is probably a crime, especially since I love Heart of Darkness so much, and I honestly forgot about Great Escape, and haven't see Gallipoli either.

As far as what counts as a war movie, I'm using a broad definition. Movies like The Great Raid, or Andersonville depict prisons, escapes, that sort of thing, but are still war movies. There's some great war movies that have comparatively little fighting in them, which is why I count films like Gladiator, and I'd probably be willing to add something like The Pianist too, even though it isn't about the war.

[Updated to 4:45pm: I had Three Kings on the list originally, but took it off because the list was already pretty big, silly reason now I guess.]

Dag - Perhaps a bit premature [Smile] . You know technically any of the Star Wars films would qualify as war movies, especially if we're allowing fictional wars.

Blayne your list is off. It should be:

12 Glory
12 Enemy at the Gates
12 Apocalypse Now
10 The Thin Red Line
10 Jarhead
10 Three Kings
10 Zulu
10 Gallipoli
10 The Great Escape
10 Bridge on the River Kwai
10 The Longest Day
10 Midway
10 Gettysburg
10 Spartacus
10 Blackhawk Down
10 The Great Raid
10 Full Metal Jacket
10 Tora! Tora! Tora!
10 Patton
8 Platoon
8 Hotel Rwanda
8 Saving Private Ryan
6 Tears of the Sun
6 Master and Commander
6 Braveheart
4 Gladiator
4 M*A*S*H
4 Troy

Not sure how I feel about using two -2s on the same movie, but if you hate it that much, I suppose it's all fair.

+2 Blackhawk Down
-2 Thin Red Line (though I need to watch it again and see if my opinion has changed)

Lord of the Rings could be considered a war movie, ableit a fantasy war based on experiences in WW1.

As for me:
Patton +2
Full Metal Jacket +2

Haven't seen most of these anyhoo...

Posted by Lyrhawn (Member # 7039) on :

It was a starter list Dante, I fully expected people to add movies to it as we go along.

And I think I make the cutoff at Sound of Music. Too much singing, not enough Nazis.

Earndil, choose one of those for your +2. One +2 per day, and two -2s. As for LOTR, I'm curious as to what other think on including fantasy/scifi/anime movies on the list.

(Alright, anime, fantasy, sci fi, it's all fair game, so long as you nominate it fairly by burning a vote (as Storm puts it [Smile] ). People will decide with their negatives and positives whether or not the genre really matters when choosing the greatest war movie ever.)

I foresee there being a problem of people voting down a movie because they haven't seen it. I understand that that may just be how the ball bounces in this particular format, but I wonder if it's fair to say that a movie is 'better' than another that no one's seen, because in that case, it's not 'better', it's just been seen more.

/Porter

(I love ya, mph. I just have to tease. [Wink] [Razz] )

Posted by Samprimary (Member # 8561) on :

If it's all fair game if it's circumstantially related to war, then shouldn't Schindler's List be on there?

Posted by Lyrhawn (Member # 7039) on :

I considered it, along with The Pianist when I was first making the list, but I hadn't decided how close to war it needed to be in order to count. I think those are both fair game though.

Feel free to add it tomorrow [Smile] .

I think in order for it to be considered a war movie, the main thrust of the movie has to be directly related to the war, rather than the backdrop, thus, Sound of Music doesn't count because it's really more about the Von Trapp family and some darn good Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer acting than it is about the Nazis, who are at best a subplot.

Schindler's List and The Pianist count because the war is the cause of every ill that takes place in the movies, and both feature elements of the war itself in them.

Could something like Band Of Brothers be nominated?

Posted by Adam_S (Member # 9695) on :

Can we count Band of Brothers? Other countries take their miniseries and call them movies in the US (Das Boot, The Decalogue, Berlin Alexanderplatz, Scenes from a Marraige, Fanny and Alexander) so there's precedent for calling tv productions movies when people want to forget they came from tv [Roll Eyes] .
So +2 to Band of Brothers if it counts (I think of it as a film, not as tv)
otherwise I'd say +2 to Empire of the Sun
-2 to MASH
-2 to Troy

8 The Great Raid
6 Patton
6 Zulu
6 Blackhawk Down
6 Hotel Rwanda
6 Saving Private Ryan
4 Three Kings
4 Braveheart
4 Enemy at the Gates

Eliminated:
Troy
The Thin Red Line
Gladiator
M*A*S*H
Jarhead
Tears of the Sun (Sorry Rakeesh)
Master & Commander

My own vote:
+2 Gettysburg
-2 Jarhead
-2 Red Dawn (there's some pretty bad acting in there)

And no time limit on adding movies. If people add good movies that people have seen, they'll stay, if they nominate bad movies that people dislike or any movie that no one has seen, it'll be eliminated. But every movie should get their shot I think. Agreed?

Just to be clear, how many times do we get to vote for a movie?

Posted by Lyrhawn (Member # 7039) on :

Once a day you get two -2s and one +2. You can't vote for an eliminated movie, you can't vote more than once a day, you CAN use both your negative votes on the same movie.

Posted by Storm Saxon (Member # 3101) on :

No, I mean, can we keep voting +2 for the same movie day after day?

Posted by Lyrhawn (Member # 7039) on :

Oh. Sure, if you think it's the best, more power to you.

Edit to add: Do you think there should be a limit? It hadn't occurred to me, I just figured if it's your favorite movie, you should be able to support it however much you want.

Posted by Storm Saxon (Member # 3101) on :

No, just curious.

At the very least, this thread will give a lot of people ideas for movies to watch. I know I probably haven't seen half of these movies.

You can each revote one -2 if you want, as two of your movies were also already eliminated.

Only one plus two vote is allowed per day, so pick either Patton or Great Escape.

Then you're free to pick another minus two.

My vote:

I'd say Hotel Rwanda is a war movie; specifically, a civil war movie.

Not to say that you shouldn't vote it down. There's sense in voting up films that represent the genre more aptly.

I agree there should be a moratorium on adding new movies; it's not fair.

As such, I'm refraining from adding "Mister Roberts" which is undeniably the greatest war movie ever. [Wink]

Also, I think the final episode of "Blackadder Goes Forth" is the most affecting "war movie" I've ever seen.

Here's what I propose for adding new movies: No more new movies until a winner is declared for what is already up there (or maybe the top three). After a winner is declared, for two days, I'll take as many nominations as you all have for new, good war movies. The next round will be more aggressive, with three mandatory -2s if you want to vote a +2 and have it count. At the end of that round (or maybe the top three), whatever is left from both groups will face off in a final confrontation to decide the best war movie ever.

And just like in real life, people are allowed an equal vote when they have zero knowledge of what they're voting about edit: (I'm just sore because the two you voted down were my favs). Not that I don't like Sgt. York...

And just because it's piqued my interest, I'll list my top 5 war movies along with my votes for today:

Glory and Gettysburg's historical inaccuracies bother you over the rest of this list? Hoo boy. The speechifying in Gettysburg can be a bit much for some people, and maybe I wouldn't have minded it being 45 minutes shorter and lacking them, but what they got right (which is a lot) is still fantastic. Same thing with Glory, so far as inaccuracies and fantasticness.

I like those films, but both are primarily POW movies that don't show the full spectrum of war.

I'm not adding All's Quiet on the Western Front, but that was my first war-what-is-it-good-for-movie experience.

Its more people are voting -4 to two movies I thought were amazing. So I took the one I thought was overated on the list and did a BlackBlade reality check on it.

I don't think Sgt. York is bad per se. But the fact The Great Escape has 4 points and within elimination from a single post disturbs me especially with Apocalypse Now currently in the lead, I really think its overrated, while Band of Brothers is initially took a huge pounding.

Similarly, I think Glory is a great movie, but certainly not greater then Saving Private Ryan which for some reason is not as "great" as Tora! Tora! Tora!

Also what was bad about Charlie Sheens performance in Platoon? I actually think Platoon was a well executed movie, though I disagree with some of its conclusions. Yet it too is beaten out by The Longest Day.

Obviously the list is not going to remotely reflect BlackBlade's perception of reality but I'll do what I can do make it do so as much as possible. Expect future hostility to be directed towards one of the top 3 movies in the list, but I'll admit Glory is OK where it is for now.

Part of my "mileage" is that I am going to crush other's movies that I they may like but I do not and promote the ones I liked alot.

Initially I came into the thread determined to only vote against movies I have actually seen, but that resolve is being weakened daily.

No kidding. I've noticed that myself, but frankly I can't think of a system that'll work when most people haven't even seen half the movies on here.

I certainly don't think a system is just that lets someone vote -4 for Band of Brothers. [Wink]

Posted by FlyingCow (Member # 2150) on :

The Charlie Sheen comment was as a response to the Gary Cooper comment. It's not that Cooper was considered bad in the role, but that the idea of Cooper in that role was annoying. Struck me as odd... especially since the idea of Charlie Sheen as the central figure in a war film (knowing his other work) is equally or more improbable.

Seemed a strange reason to knock down a good movie - though Storm may have had other reasons, surely.

BlackBlade, your reasoning actually seems more sound in my mind. You're applying relativism, I guess. Vote for movies to move them ahead of others, and vote down movies to move them behind others. I get that.

As for my own reasons, I find Great Escape and Bridge on the River Kwai to be more prisoner movies than war movies. And I just never liked Platoon all that much.

Posted by BlackBlade (Member # 8376) on :

Well thanks Flying Cow [Smile]

Not that I want to discuss it in any lengthy way, but part of the dynamic of The Great Escape was that they were prisoners in a time of war and thus were OBLIGATED to try and escape. How the German's dealt with that aspect was an ethical dilemma. A big chunk of the movie takes place outside the prison.

But if actual battles or skirmishes are part of the requisite for a war movie Ill concede that, The Great Escape does not deliver in that regard.

erosomniac: Every -4 that you submit for Band of Brothers is a "-4 points of stock you've got in my book" [No No] It's proven that negative BlackBlade stock causes misfortune, true story!

I honestly don't get the love for this series. It's not horrible, but it's completely unoriginal, filled with bad performances by bad actors, badly paced and, worst of all, commits the cardinal sin of being boring.

It is, to date, the only war program that I've actually fallen asleep watching. I got through the first four episodes, then gave up.

+2 Band of Brothers.
-2 Gallipoli
-2 Der Untergang (Downfall)

I can see how you might find it boring eros TBH. But I'm a history buff and I loved how I could so easily get immersed in the world of the characters. I felt the actors all did a wonderful job as I cared about just about every single one of them by the end of the series, Buck being the only exception, but that was more because I did not like the character and how he turned out rather then the actors portrayal.

The only war program I ever got bored with was The Thin Red Line because it felt like it expended all its ammunition for 30 minutes and then just groaned until the end of the movie.

I don't think the voting is to "keep things even". I may think that Full Metal Jacket is a better movie than Lawrence or Arabia, for instance... I just don't think it was four times as good, which is what the previous tally pointed out.

We're down to a list of movies I have trouble voting down, because they're all pretty good. It's down to taking points away from movies I think are rated too highly at this point.

It's sort of like taking box office income away from Titanic, because it really isn't *that* much better than other top grossing movies. Man, though, do I wish I could do that... [Evil]

No. I've read a synopsis of the film, and while I am interested in seeing it very much, it just does not seem to me to be a war movie so much as the story of the final days of a man and his comrades with war in the background. A similar criticism was leveled against The Great Escape.

Yes I acknowledge that my opinion is next to worthless until I've seen it. Also my resolve to only submit votes to movies broke on that last post.

I think your interpretation of the scoring is a little off. Full Metal Jacket is obviously not 4 times better than Lawrence of Arabia, but in my opinion, Full Metal Jacket is slightly better, and if that means that Lawrence of Arabia goes out in 9th place instead of first, it's because all of these movies are separated by like 1/10 of a point. For example, I would give Full Metal Jacket something like a 9.9 out of 10, whereas Lawrence of Arabia would get a 9.2.

Likewise, even the worst of these movies, in my book, ranks over 8.8. They're all great movies...but it's a lot of fun to play the game to find the greatest.

Lyrhawn, an idea: As we get down to a top 10, can we rank them as they get voted out?

Can't believe the thin red line was eliminated. What is this, "The Popular Front for the Muzzling of Terrence Malick"? Badlands, Days of Heaven, Thin Red Line, New World. He has yet to even make a mediocre film, let alone a bad one. Easily my favorite War Movie of all time, alongside Apocalypse Now and the film I'll give +2 too

+2 Dr. Strangelove

Btw, are foreign films like "A Very Long Engagement" possible, or semi-obscure stuff like Paths of Glory?

graywolfe, you might want to recast your vote from the updated list as well. New nominations have been put on hold until we finish off the current choices, so hold on to that "Dr. Strangelove" thought. [Smile]

That seems trivial to me. The medium is the same, the presentation is the same. If they took EVERY episode and condensed them into 3-4 movies all under the title Band of Brothers 1/2/3/4 then you would be OK with it? Or would the individual movies have to be considered separately even though its all a retelling of a group of men's experiences in the WW2 European theater, and presented chronologically?

As far as I'm concerned, it's a movie, it's just serialized instead of told all at once. If you watch it straight through, it basically reads as a really long movie.

Maybe it can win as Greatest War Serial.

Samp, I was hesitant to count your second ‘after midnight’ vote, but I did. Even with mountain time, you still made both your votes on the same day, but you hadn’t voted for a couple days, so I let it go.

If there's no objections, I'm just going to take these four and hold them over to the final round. So, if there's anyone around who isn't bored to death by the trudging slog that is this game, for Saturday and Sunday, you can throw out, say two nominations per person, and we'll tally it up and start super accelerated round two, followed by the hyper accelerated final round. Happy nominating.
