I didn't see a thread on this when I did a search.

Have you guys heard rumor that there is a push to get Fred Thompson to run for President on the Republican ticket?

Chicago Sun-Times link
Yahoo News

Commentary

I just hadn't see this discussed here, and wanted to see what the general feeling of this possibility is. I realize most of the people on Hatrack aren't conservatives, but I'd like to hear from those who are. (or non-conservatives too, I guess)

He seems ok fiscally... but only ok...

He seems to be too homophobic for me to vote for him.

AFAIK, Thompson isn't just a passive player in this push. I believe he is the one who started the rumors when he said a few weeks ago he might be interested. I'll have to go gathering some blog links (I only read one blog anyway) and dig up some news articles to prove this. I might be a while because I don't do this kind of thing very often, and I have to go to bed soon. [Sleep]

It might be too late for him to raise funds and awareness, but considering that "Rudy McRomney" doesn't represent all of what conservatives want in a candidate, he might be able to do it, too. This is because he seems to have the brashness and head-busting ability of Guiliani, the political will and appeal of McCain, and the conservatism of Romney.

I like the idea. He is being called a "Reagan" conservative, but I don't know how close he is. He is close enough for me to vote for. He could be in over his head, but he is an open conservative with reasonable success in Hollywood, so I think he has the strength to campaign and win the nomination.

I find this line from the Chicago Sun-Times link telling:

quote:
He is viewed by the Christian right as more acceptable than any of the three Republican candidates leading in the polls: Rudy Giuliani, John McCain and Mitt Romney.
Seems like the Religious Right isn't going to relinquish its power in the GOP quietly.

I'm trying to figure out WHY the "politically active" part of the religious right likes Thompson better than the other two. Better than Guilani, I understand, but not sure why they like him better than Romney or McCain. (other than the fact that he is likened to Reagan and Reaganomics a lot)

He's not a Mormon, and he's more hostile to gay marriage than McCain.

He also has face recognition.

I would say name recognition, but he's one of those actors who I only remember by what he looks like and I've never remembered his name. (Maybe that will change now.)

By having him run, you get at least a small percentage of people who will vote for him just because they've seen him on "Law & Order".

There are many in the religious right who do not have a lot of liking for Mormons, FG.

He's a great choice. Not thrilled with the other faux conservatives on the campaign trail, but I fear that it may be too late for him to jump in. Same goes for Newt, who'd be my dream candidate, but I don't think he'd be electible. I wish Thompson would decide quick and jump in the race soon.

NEWT is your dream candidate?!? [Eek!]

Some of the polls on conservative sites show Newt would be a favored candidate if he would run.

But those polls don't even LIST some of the choices I would have, so neh.

I like Newt. Yes, he's against SSM, but I *do* have a soft spot for republicans who don't disown their gay family members.

From March 11: http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,258222,00.html

quote:
WALLACE: There's been a lot of buzz, as we said, in Republican circles that there's no true conservative in the GOP presidential field. Now some top Republicans, including your friend former Tennessee senator Howard Baker, are putting out trial balloons about you possibly entering the race.

Question: Are you considering running for president in 2008?

THOMPSON: I'm giving some thought to it. Going to leave the door open.

From February 22 http://blogs.knoxnews.com/knx/silence/archives/2007/02/those_fred_thom.shtml

That is the earliest one I could find. I know chatter has been around much longer.

Imagine the Farewell Episode of Law and Order if he decides to run. That would be a good show.

like me, heh Pixie?? [Wink]

Well, I think if Thompson is going to make a serious run, he'd better be getting those running shoes on really soon and get going, or he will miss any chance...
