March 31 Saturday Night Live made fun of an old artist who changed religion and who's name I can't remember but music I love. I've spent over 40 minutes trying to find the name on the Internet but must have the wrong lyrics in my head. They go something like this.

I've been dreaming lately, of things to come and change..

Anyone know who this is?

Cat Stevens.
Yusuf Islam.

<nod> Listening to Cat Stevens singing about peace is so ironic these days.

He was on NPR Friday. He does 4 songs and his voice is still pure velvet. The irony escapes me.

He supports terrorist groups (who also do humanitarian work).

From Wiki:

The following day, Yusuf Islam was deported back to the United Kingdom. The United States Transportation Security Administration claimed there were "concerns of ties he may have to potential terrorist-related activities." The United States Department of Homeland Security specifically alleged that Islam had provided funding to the Palestinian Islamic militant group Hamas, although it did not offer any proof of its allegation, nor has any turned up, as evidenced by the fact that Islam was admitted without incident into the United States in December 2006 for several radio concert performances and interviews to promote his new record...

As a footnote to the actions taken by the U.S. government in deporting Yusuf Islam as a suspected terrorist, The Sun and The Sunday Times British newspapers had published reports in October 2004 which stated that the U.S. was correct in its action. As a result Yusuf Islam sued for libel, and received a substantial out-of-court, "agreed settlement" and apology from the newspapers.[33] Both newspapers acknowledged that Yusuf Islam has never supported terrorism and that, to the contrary, he had recently been given a Man for Peace award from the private Nobel Peace Prize Laureates Committee.

It was Madtv by the way.

The irony that he sings about peace but is a muslim is as ironic as any reference to Islam being the religion of peace. I don't care who he sues for libel. Of course Muslims want peace. The only way it can be achieved is for Islam to dominate the world. In order for that to happen, some heads are gonna have to come off.

I'm too tired to engage, here, but I just want to raise my hand and say -- albeit feebly -- that I'd be ripping you guys a new one if I thought it were worth the effort. Carry on with the exposed bigotry.

Sweet! I love passive confirmation of exposed bigotry.

Who would win in a fight: Cat Stevens or Jim Croce?

Posted by docmagik (Member # 1131) on :

Looks like Cat Stevens.

I hate the Islamic religion. I think it's practitioners are the enemy of civilization. I think a (real) war is coming, and although they will win, I will die before they convert me. And I plan on taking as many of them with me as I can.
Try researching its history some time, if you can pull your head out of its dark holder long enough. I could go into the reasons why our civilization can only be what it is today because the Muslims, the light of the world while Europe was in its so-called "Dark Ages", preserved our classical roots for us. But I don't see that it would do any good trying to explain rational things like that to an ignorant bigot like yourself, so the hell with it.

ARRRRGGGG

There are aspects of Christianity I hate. ASPECTS. But I don't hate the entire religion! There are so many good things about it that it outweighs the bad.
Most of the stuff I hate in Islam was already there long before people converted to it.
Your attitude drives me completely insane. Just as Verily said, our civilization wouldn't even be the way it was without the Muslims.

graaaaaaaaaaaah
You're as bad as those irratating fundamentalist Muslims, almost, who want to kill folks if they don't want to grow a beard! I hate that attitude so MUCH!

There's no way anyone can get me to fight such an asinine war.
I have no interest.

Where can one find a link to the TOS? I can't find one, and apparently I'm really off about what I think it says.

I hope what I said wasn't offensive...
There are aspects of all social systems that anger me. Psychology, the child welfare system, feminism, anti-feminists, school, but these are useful things and should never be thrown out, except some aspects of anti-feminism. Different points of view can be so useful.

Just remember, while you're playing "let's feel tingly about muslims" they're plotting your death. You are an infidel, after all.

I think it only appears when you're registering. Here you go.

Edit: Apparently the link doesn't work if you're already logged in, so here's the text of the agreement.

Syn, I think vonk may have been referring to Resh.

Posted by vonk (Member # 9027) on :

On the nose Megan.

And no, I'm not off about what it says. Thanks Jon Boy!

So, what can your average poster do about TOS violators? I hope "ignore them" is not the only answer.

Whistle the offensive posts. That way you know PJ won't miss it.

Just making sure...
I hate being rude...

Don't worry about it, I deleted it.

P to the S, I'm sorry I hurt your guys' poor little sensibilities. I'm sure they'll be respected when your neck is under the sword.

Posted by Synesthesia (Member # 4774) on :

OK, that's offensive too!
Judging an entire religion on the basis of fundamentalists and mad people is not acceptable.

Thank you for deleting that other post, Resh. It was definitely over the line (a couple others are borderline, and I wouldn't mind you choosing to edit or delete them, too, frankly). And thanks to the whistlers who brought the thread and its direction to my attention. For future reference, the TOS can be accessed at this link, which can also be reached through the "faq" link near the top right below the post buttons.

The TOS can be difficult in this regard, because we don't want to shut down "discussion" of religion(s), but we do want to avoid "disparaging" religions or their adherents, and the line between those can get rather blurry at times. I've been trying to read each post assuming the best intentions of the author; when I can't find a best intention that doesn't clearly violate at least the intent of the TOS then I'm compelled to edit, delete, post, lock, e-mail, or any combination thereof.

Those of you who endeavor to make my janitorial life as easy as possible by aiming for the best in yourselves and encouraging the best in others, I really appreciate it and you.

It's too easy to offend to be fun.

Posted by Reshpeckobiggle (Member # 8947) on :

PJ, if you would point out which ones you dislike, I'll do what I can to prevent corssing that line in the future. I knew that last one was definitely crossing it, and so deleting it was not a problem.

Also, I don't disparage other religions. That implies I do it to more than one. I only disparage the one.

Just kidding.

Posted by Jon Boy (Member # 4284) on :

Ha ha! If you throw "just kidding" onto the end of any offensive statement, it makes it not offensive anymore!

Posted by Reshpeckobiggle (Member # 8947) on :

I've noticed that too. I meant just kidding about implying that I really wasn't breaking the rules by restricting my insults to a single religion.
