I have a password-protected RAR archive I'm interested in opening, and I received nonsense instructions on how to get the password (all legal, as far as I can trace).

I cross-referred four languages of the instructions; it didn't help. Do any of you know a way where I can just get through this?

Sorry to say, I'm not sure you can do anything short of trying to brute-force the password (key). If it's simple, it might not take long. If it's complex, you're better off saving your time.

And I don't have any recommendations, software-wise. I've never been in that situation. Good luck.

A quick google search indicated that password-protected RAR archives are actually encrypted using a hash of the password, and so the only way to break them are brute force attacks (either by checking all possible passwords, or a dictionary of likely passwords). There are some utilities you can download which will perform the brute force attack for you, but I can't vouch for their usefulness or safety. You may be better off trying to obtain the password or contents of the RAR some other way.

Thanks, folks. I'll see what can be done! [Smile]
