FOX is going to 'Drive' me crazy

You’d think I would know better.

You would think that after being burned time and time again, I would think twice before jumping into another relationship that is almost certain to make me crazy and leave me stranded and alone, cruising the Internet for other broken-hearted people who will commiserate with me.

But I have seen the first two episodes of the new show “Drive,” premiering this Sunday, and I fell head over heels in love. I can’t wait to see how this exciting, character-driven show unfolds.

Which is why it is certain to be cancelled quickly: I like it. The curse awakens…

It's your fault Fox cancelled The Adventures of Brisco County, Jr.?

Bastard.

I've been biting my fingers waiting for Sunday to roll around, your column has only made the wait that much more difficult!

I consider it my fault that I could not save Firefly as I was unaware of its existence until it was too late [Frown] Curse religious missions!

You see, I was torn on this show...because it sounded kind of Death Race 2000 to me...but now I'm gonna hafta watch it.

The show is much more like "Heroes": serial stories like "Lost" and "24," but lighter. The drama and excitement is there, but there's lots of humor. I wouldn't watch it otherwise.

My son now believes I can produce unshown TV shows and demands I show him the rest of the season. I think he's joking... ?

Posted by Tarrsk (Member # 332) on :

I've heard it described with the following analogy, SAT-style:

Lost : Survivor :: Drive : The Amazing Race

I saw the adverts for it and remained unconvinced, but now I'll watch it.

And not just because I have a brain crush on you. [Smile]

Chris, I think Minear only has one N in it.

I'm skittish, too. I love Nathan Fillion and Tim Minear, but I don't like Fox. And why does he keep going back to them anyway?

I will have to watch this show now. I had planned on avoiding it.

To be honest, I don't need another show in my lineup - I don't watch much television as it is. But I avoided Firefly when it first came out, too, based on one commercial I saw that just didn't grab my attention. I never would have known about it at all if not for Chris' proselytizing on Hatrack, and I absolutely loved Firefly.

So, I'm going to watch because Chris said so. (Don't let the power go to your head.) If it sucks, though, I will be obligated to hunt him down and dump his body in the Everglades.

Three out of the three local TV reviewers in my area have given Drive negative advance reviews.

"Too much mystery."

"It reminds me too much of The X-Files and Lost. I like shows like Law and Order. Beginning. Middle. End."

"The show seems like it would be more to the taste of genre fans."

So, naturally now I -have- to see it. [Cool]

It's the flip side of the Fox equation. Fox cancels more brilliant shows than all the other networks put together... but it also gives more brilliant shows a chance than all the other networks combined. They'll give anything a chance; they just won't keep it around long unless it hits it big.

For all its flaws, I think this beats the usual approach of only programming conventional stuff.

Posted by AvidReader (Member # 6007) on :

Sounds neat, Chris. My only quibble is that Sliders needed to die after John Rhys-Davies left the show. They brought in that unpleasant woman and I stuck around a while. But when they swapped out Wade for Charlie O'Connell, I bailed.

Not that I didn't like Charlie. I just couldn't deal with the unpleasant woman who showed a little more skin being the only regular female character. Stupid male sci-fi writers.

Well, one thing you've got to give Fox credit for--they're promoting this thing like they've never promoted anything before.

When I squeeze my toothpaste tube in the morning, I half expect ads for Drive to come out.

Posted by TL (Member # 8124) on :

Well, I just saw the first two episodes also. And it's a brilliant show, actually, because the way the story is constructed (very much like Battlestar Galactica) -- it could go for years or for 13 episodes; it could be cancelled at any time and all of the loose ends could be tied up within 42 minutes, leaving the viewer to feel as if they experienced a complete story with a beginning, middle, and end.

Neat trick.

All they have to do is keep dangling the carrot of that finish-line (like BSG dangles the carrot of Earth).

My complaint is that the woman who plays Fillion's (spoilers) partner is, to me, completely unlikeable. I may not be able to continue watching the show just because of that bimbo's plastic acting.

They should have cast Amy Acker as that character and the bimbo as his wife. Man, that part was miscast.

Will episodes of Drive be available online?

I had to give up catching the premiere tonight because the rest of my family wanted to watch Planet Earth.

Posted by GaalDornick (Member # 8880) on :

That was a really cool show. I only caught some of the pilot but all of the second one and I'm definitely going to watch again tomorrow, if I remember.

Did they explain why someone is putting down $32 million dollars for the winner of the race in the pilot? And why did only some of the racers have a person stolen from them while others are just in it for the money?

Posted by Wowbagger the Infinitely Prolonged (Member # 7476) on :

Wow...loving this show...which is a bad sign for me....I have bad luck on these sort of shows. In this case I'm thinking they'll keep this show around, they're giving it a pretty good slot (before 24) on a night people are used to watching those sort of shows. If they put the show on Thursday or Friday I'd be worried.

Posted by Morbo (Member # 5309) on :

No, there was no explanations for either of those two questions.

I liked Drive, it's like a much better Gumball Rally

Good characters and actors, carchases and stunts, the mystery of why someone is manipulating all these people: a good excuse for a series.

Fox HAS made me crazy... I just watched ALL the episodes of Firefly back to back and... and... there's no more?!? ARGH!!!

Now I have to go watch Serenity again...

Posted by Shanna (Member # 7900) on :

I really liked it tonight. I think the pilot was better than the pilot for Heroes, which I love.

I really liked the whole cast of characters. From the mother to the brothers and then the cute father-daughter team. I'm glad that I have a reason besides just Nathan to watch the show.

This show has really exceeded my expectations. There were alot more twists and questions than I was expecting and during the ads my roommate and I couldn't stop speculating and theorizing. I'm excited to see where it goes.

And yeah, the promotion has been insane. Let's hope it brought in good numbers!

Tiffany and I both watched the pilot, and we both went crazy that we get our next fix tomorrow at 7:00pm! SO glad this will not conflict with Heroes.

I thought it was decent after the first episode but by the end of the second I was very interested/invested in the show. I really like all the diverse teams, I don't have a favorite yet.

Posted by Tarrsk (Member # 332) on :

There were a few moments that didn't quite ring true (the astrophysicist in the doctor's office, for example), but by and large, it was as good as I'd hoped. Nathan Fillion rocked, of course, but the rest of the cast was great as well. I was expecting to dislike the two brothers and the new mother, but they ended up among my favorite characters. I especially liked how Minear dispensed with the "aww cute baby" stuff early on, and then just let the mother be completely neurotic. Everyone else on the show is either excited or pissed off; it's fun to have one character who's just plain nuts. [Wink] And the solution to the "penalty" was inspired!

The race orientation guy gave the new mother (whose name I'm totally blanking on) the gun and told her to eliminate the blonde girl, but added that the girl had better be off that SUV by the end of the day, or the mother would be eliminated instead. Instead, the blonde girl decides to betray her friends and join up with the new mother, so that she is no longer on the SUV, but also isn't dead.

It's a plot twist that could have felt contrived, hinging as it does on an overly literally reading of what Orientation Guy said (the "Eowyn Defense," if you will), but the fact that it was the blonde girl herself who came up with the idea made it work for me. You end up still believing that New Mother Lady is crazy enough to have actually gone through with the shooting, while simultaneously getting some development on Machiavellian Blonde Girl- a deft bit of character work all around.

On the other hand, since Blonde Girl didn't actually hear what Orientation Guy said, I thought it felt contrived... but given the standard set by the show as a whole, that almost passed for normal. Ooh, maybe the gun was disabled, and Blonde Girl is working for Them!

(Note: that was sarcasm, not speculation.)

I've never gotten into Lost, 24, X-Files, etc., which may explain why I didn't like Drive at all. Too random.

That scene was a bit contrived, but it worked for me.

The dialog was well done.

Glom Girl: Girl who glommed onto Mal.

Mal : Why'd you pick me?

Glom Girl: Well, it was either you or the crazy lady with the plastic baby.

I convinced my roommates to watch, and we all liked it. We did make a lot of fun of the jailed brother saying "homes" a lot, and that the daughter of the sick dad looks like a Las Vegas Lindsey Lohan impersonator (views were split if it was a drag show version).

Overall, very entertaining. We all though the new mom was the cutest female of the bunch, and we all loved how Mal is still Mal, beat up ship and all.

Ah thank you. I missed that "off the SUV" detail. Just like I missed the detail with the baby--where was it exactly?

Best line of the show:

Mal: I don't know....I missed orientation!

We laughed like crazy. I'm completely loving the show, but wondering if it's just my unhealthy love for Nathan Fillion that's keeping me around. [Smile] I guess it's enough.

Posted by Morbo (Member # 5309) on :

Yes, Mal delivered that line with perfect timing.

It's not spelled out, but I think the baby is either in an adoption center or some kind of shelter for abused women.

When Melanie Lynsky/New mom (I agree, Mightycow, she is the cutest) is arrested then released, she freaks out when told her husband will be there shortly and begs to be put in jail. Seems like a battered woman to me.

grrr... curse you Bridges... now I'm set up for another dissapointingly short series that will leave me longing for years to come...

on the plus side: did anyone else think that there were much fewer commercials last night than normal? I swear there were 3+ spots where you could see there should be a commercial but it just kept going... My roomate suggested that some of the car companies probably paid to be featured more promenantly (which makes a ton of sense to me)

And ratings are in... and they're not strong. 3.7/6 for FOX, with viewers starting at 6.4 million and dropping to 5.59 million by the end.

Not hideous, but certainly less than FOX was hoping for. In comparison, a rerun of Extreme makeover had 10.23 million viewers.

Tonight the third episode goes up against "Dancing with the Stars" and "Deal or No Deal." Let's hope FOX holds out until "Drive" finds its audience.

I recently watched Idiocracy, a movie that resonates with me at the oddest times, despite its flaws.

In it, the highest rated show on TV 500 years from now was called "Ow! My Balls!" and consisted of a man being injured in the groin repeatedly.

Perhaps 500 years gives the human race too much credit. O_O

I am a little worried. Wasn't tonight supposed to be a back to back episode? If so, did they cancel it because of low ratings?

Or was I confusing Sunday's night with tonights?

Posted by Wowbagger the Infinitely Prolonged (Member # 7476) on :

No, you are confusing it with the 24 premiere which had 2 days of two hour episodes. Drive couldn't do that without breaking up 24's uninterrupted run. It's taking over the Prison Break time slot.

"Carenity."

TheReader: He's definitely channeling Angry Mal from "Serenity." Mal in the series was more similar to IRL Nathan Fillion (although often still fairly intense- think "You wanna meet the real me?"), who from all accounts is one of the funniest and most easy-going men alive.

I've enjoyed the first three episodes.

Then again, I enjoyed the first three episodes of Studio 60 and The Black Donnellys, so maybe I'm not the best judge.

I must admit, though, that it's not ohmygoshIhavetogethometoseeit good - it's not as compelling as, say, Heroes or 24 or West Wing. It also feels like it's trying a bit too hard to be unpredictable.

My girlfriend is lukewarm on it so far.

Now that Mal has Serenity... er, Alex has his old racer... I'm looking for it to hit its stride.

I think the problem for me is that the only two characters I really care about are Alex and Winston.

It also kind of irked me that the previews on Sunday were not for Monday's show - half of the stuff previewed didn't happen, and was recycled for Monday night's postshow previews. Because I watched the preview and was expecting those thinsg to happen, Monday's show felt incomplete somehow.

I am looking forward to next week - but I have to admit that it's a marriage of convenience being on right before 24. If 24 wasn't there (or after 24 ends), I don't know how compelled I would be to make it a point to tune in. Which isn't good.

I've only seen the first 2 episodes so far and I like it. I'll keep watching it anyway.

It really bugged me that they had to make it to Cape Canaveral in time for a shuttle launch. There is no way they would be able to "race" there when a shuttle was launching.

I really like the astrophysicist and his daughter (even if she does look like pre-druggie Lindsay Lohan). They already have great chemistry as actors, and the "teach Dad how to lie" bit was very funny.

The Iraq vet and his girlfriend are surprisingly dull.

Winston and his brother also have great chemistry, and the showdown with their father's stooge in this episode showed an interesting darker side of the Younger Salazar, which I hope gets explored more fully in upcoming episodes.

Alex roaring past the opposition at the end of the episode was just freakin' awesome. And this coming from someone who normally views the fetishization of cars with complete incomprehension.

Oh I forgot to mention- I'm diggin' Wendy Patrakas as well. I was glad they didn't actually pull the "she's so stupid that she hands over her keys and credit card and gets her van stolen from under her" thing, and her steely "don't mess with me" look when Machiavellian Girl tried to stow the baby seat was genuinely frightening, in an adorable, crazy sort of way.

I think this line of products would be a perfect tie in for the show on so many levels.

Posted by lem (Member # 6914) on :

This is looking like a one season show to me. I like it. It is getting very interesting, however it seems like a show that is only good for a season.

I love the crazy mom. I am annoyed by the blond main girl. She is annoying enough to almost make me loose interest in the show.

Posted by FlyingCow (Member # 2150) on :

I have very little interest in the physicist/daughter combo, the crazy baby lady, the katrina survivors, the cop investigating Alex's wife, or the soldier/girlfriend.

That's bad.

I have only mild interest in Shawn Salazar, Alex's "partner", the old couple on the motorcycle, and the guy who lost the flash drive.

That's also not so good.

I am very interested in Alex's plight and history, as well as Winston's family trouble and history.

That's what's keeping me coming back to the show.

I'm really hoping, though, that those other characters are "sleepers" - in that I will become more interested as the show progresses. But, quite honestly, the writers should have made them more interesting from day one. Or, chosen different central characters.

The other thing that I'm not really on board with is the "why" factor. Why are they staging this race? What do the race organizers get for their $32 million? With the race having been run for over 20 years, you're talking about hundreds of millions of dollars for what?

If it's a "bored old billionaires" storyline, I'm going to be ticked. Maybe there's a betting ring associated with this, with people wagering on who's going to win based on their dossiers and motivation? Perhaps.

But it's a problem that I haven't been forced to buy in to the concept enough to care to really speculate.

Posted by Shanna (Member # 7900) on :

I love Katrina-girl. She looks and sounds like one of my friends. They're so similar that I actually checked imdb to make sure she didn't have a moonlighting acting career.

As for the "why," our guess is also "bored old billionaires" who each interfere on behalf of their rider. I really hope its not easy.

And from what I read on TVGuide.com, it doesn't look like 13 episodes is supposed to take us to the end of the race. At the end of the interview Tim Minear says:

quote:
If we weren't [a] mid-season [show], 22 [episodes] would take us from a start to a finish," he says. "[But] 13 isn't enough to get me to the end of one of these races, so you're going to get a natural stopping point at 13, and when we come back, we will finish the race."
Not sure he's going to get that second season, but I know I'm doing everything I can to get people onboard. I am harrasing the daylights out of everyone I know who watches Lost or Heroes. And people are getting the dvd set as gifts when it hit the shelves.

That's assuming the show itself doesn't nosedive like the ratings. But I trust it in Tim's hands.

There is an angle in that scene where the camera is on the front right of the car, my friend and I watched it at least 15 times trying to figure out how they did that shot. We think it must have been on a trailer that they edited out because the car's shadow looks really fake. Still it was an awesome shot.

As to the "Why" I am going with the betting theory but I think it is a small group of people who have to bring their own drivers into the race. Also from the looks of it bank robberies will be part of the race.

Good thing you warned me or I might have watched it. [Wink]

Unfortunately, it looks like you might be really on target here:
Ratings: NBC sinks; Fox's 'Drive' stalls

quote:
The two-hour premiere of "Drive," about a mysterious cross-country race, was seen by only 6 million viewers on Sunday. That put Fox behind such fare as an "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition" rerun and even the buzz-free "The Apprentice" on NBC.

Oh, I want to see this show!

Of course, chances are it will get here, be shown for half a season during non-ratings period and then disappear (hello, Joan of Arcadia!) never to be seen again - or return at 11.00am on weekdays with no advertising, following Danoz-direct TV (yes, Wonderfalls).

There is an angle in that scene where the camera is on the front right of the car, my friend and I watched it at least 15 times trying to figure out how they did that shot. We think it must have been on a trailer that they edited out because the car's shadow looks really fake. Still it was an awesome shot.
I'm almost positive that it was added in digitally. They have said that there are a number of things that they are doing with this show that they could only do digitally.

I kept waiting to hear the words "Leaf on the wind" for that whole scene, coincidentally.

Personally, I'm hoping for more scenes like the first one in the first episode.

And remember how Alex tried to steal that one guys car in the pilot? Did he actually manadge to repress his former self enough to forget how to drive a stick?

Are you talking about the one where the camera appeared to be mounted on an invisible platform attached to the car? There was a commercial a couple of years back which appeared to use a similar technique. You can see it here.

My personal guess is that the camera is mounted to the car, but that the rig attaching them has been digitally edited out. I really just guessing, though.

The first time I ever saw that shot was in Steven Spielbergs, "War of the Worlds."

It happens after the Aliens first attack and they start driving to his ex wife's parent's house I believe. I remember being very impressed when seeing it done.

They should have started Drive on Wednesdays after American Idol. I can't stand that 5th grader game show.

Anyway, I DVR scheduled it and then went out on Sunday with my husband. My son decided he wanted to watch Planet Earth on the TV that the DVR was going to use and killed the recording. Aargh! So all I have to go on is Monday's show. I liked it, but haven't seen enough yet to decide if it's something to keep on the schedule.

Spoilery speculation (no spoilers for unaired episodes)

Anyone notice who is and who isn't in the intro sequence? I wonder if Astrophysicist Dad isn't long for this world.

End spoilers!

Loved the shuttle. I'm jealous of people who get to see the launch in person.

Next week's looks a little iffy... AngryMal just HAPPENS to know someone with medical training in some random part of Georgia? Hrm...

I like the series, though.

I kind of realized the the woman who heard from god wasn't going to make it when she wasn't in the intro...

Don't know why they had to kill her off.
I liked her
She was one of the few sisters [Frown]

I was actually really glad she died. Someone needed to die.

David, I think we're going on the assumption that AngryMal/Alex has a long and illustrious criminal career, complete with random criminal connections.

I liked how they changed the opening to have Alex and Corinna in the new car.

In the first episode, remember when creepy bald guy said "Someone has a lot riding on you"? My first thought was "Someone's betting on him". I mean, the obvious interpretation would be his wife, but it sounded purposefully ambiguous.

I actually really kind of like the character development of the Army guy and his wife. At first they seemed to be really annoying, but they've actually turned out to be likable. The guy is devoted to the Army and doesn't want to turn his back on his friends, and the wife really really loves her husband. Their scenes were some of the most riveting to me. I'm curious as to what's going to happen.

Are they going to kill off everybody that isn't ridiculously good-looking? [Roll Eyes]

It looks that way, as the next likely candidate is already dying of cancer.

He's not in the intro either.

Right. It's a shame, and it's too bad that they seem to be making the intro a bit of a spoiler. It also sort of kills the suspense of the ending of the most recent episode.

Apparently Alex has a significant criminal background. I wouldn't be surprised if he knew a lot of people who could fix up wounded bank robbers under the radar.

It's a shame they killed off the Katrina nurse right when her character finally got interesting. I wonder what the "voice of God" thing was all about, and whether that will play any sort of role in the rest of the show. Her friend Leigh might get a lot more interesting now...we'll see.

Other than that, I'm really only interested in Mal (and to a lesser extent, his...er...companion?), Astrophysicist Dad, the Salazar brothers, and Wendy Patrakis (don't really care much about the girl she's got riding with her). I'm also pretty interested in the background of the race. I think that a lot of the characters are still pretty one-dimensional. I'll stick with it for awhile longer, but I'm not really hooked yet, which is a bad sign.

I declare this thread closed until further notice, courtesy of the marketing department at Fox [Frown]

While their marketing department sure has dropped the ball in the past, I don't think we can safely place the blame for the cancellation of this show on them.

Cancelling... I don't know why they have to cancel it after just a few episodes...
It was getting interesting too. [Grumble]

I thought about this thread when I saw that this was cancelled.

It's a shame. I watched the first episode and thought it had potential. Plus, poor old Nathan Fillion is getting a reputation as a show killer. [Frown]

Kind of nothing to say, I knew the show doomed when the ratings went down each time it aired.

Cancelled ALREADY?! Rats! I thought they were just taking a week off. [Frown]

Yet another reason to hate Fox. [Mad] [Grumble]

I can't complain about the amount of marketing for Drive, but I can complain about the quality.

It was too vague, just pushing "Drive!" for a month without showing you any of it. It wasn't until a week out or so we even got scenes with dialogue to get an idea of what to expect.

Running two episodes on Sunday and the next on Monday sounds good if you're going to watch 'em all, but people who missed Sunday had no reason to watch Monday since they weren't caught up.

"Heroes" succeeded, despite complicated storylines and lots of characters, because NBC kept rerunnnimg blocks of shows at different times to give people every chance in the world to catch up. And they immediately put every episode online for free for the same reason. FOX put the shows on MySpace but didn't advertise it very well.

And they should have waited and made this a summer show instead of a mid-season replacement. It was competing with first run shows people were already invested in.

Granted, all of this is hindsight...

You'd think hindsight would be 20/20... but Fox keeps screwing up, and their hindsight is legally blind.
