This thread title tells you nothing about the content of the thread! Amazing!

But the exclamation point let me know it was important.

Strangely enough, that is false in the case of this thread. This thread is all about that title.

I've been wowed.

Ah, but the content of your actual post makes up for it.

So sensitive, so friendly. Reveals some real class!

Content?

Puppy probably had a rough day at the office or something. [Smile]

I think Puppy was making an ironic commentary on Vista's thin veneer of flash masking a core mediocrity.

Why detract from Phanto's "Wow" thread, which really is about a "wow" situation?

Posted by aspectre (Member # 2222) on :

I'd think it to be more general than that. Far too many threads are given a title that implies little-to-nothing about its topic.
And some titles are so vague that even those who've participated in the thread can't associate the title with a topic. eg I've clicked on Phanto's thread at least twice, and still don't remember what's being "Wow!"ed.

Was there any reason you posted this, or where you just bored?

Agreed. Especially since there is a long-standing Hatrack tradition of misleading/intriguing thread names.

I had no idea Phanto's thread was about good news and wouldn't have ever known if it weren't for this thread. *shrug*

Which simply means that you are more likely to open an ambiguously-titled thread started by Geoff than one started by Phanto. *shrug* So?

I don't know if you guys have heard, but Jem is Truly Outrageous!

I just found out, and I was totally wowed.

Or two threads with identical titles appearing on the front page is odd and merits investigation?

What eros said is true.

More importantly, though, my previous post contains useful information: the specificity of thread titles is one factor in determining how many people read a thread.

Good point. Although if it were slightly longer, wouldn't you just assume that one was a dobie?

I don't disagree that specific titles serve a useful purpose. I disagree that noting this particularly merited a thread. And if I were Phanto, I might feel slightly hurt by Geoff's OP.

Also, intriguing non-specific titles also serve a purpose. It's just a different purpose.

Then again, I did have a pretty good idea what his thread might be about before I had a chance to open it. Phanto has had a series of similar threads about his ongoing college admissions saga.

Yes.

It's hard to believe Wow is already over 30 years old.

*looks around and finds no evidence of ETs.

I'm just as wowed as I was last year.
