I teach at a middle school in west central Ohio and each year I put together a video presentation for our Honor banquet. These are the 30-35 kids each year that make honor roll the first three quarters of the year. It usually has a couple picture of each kid with quotes about the year and a statement about the teacher who most influensed them while at school. All with their favorite song playing in the back gound. Then a quick video of each kid talking about their favorite memory from Jr. High. THis year I want to add a section that highlights big events from the school year. Keeping in mind that these are for 13-14 year old kids who live in an urban area, this is the list I came up with off the top of my head. It seems a bit morbid to me but these are the things they talked about, but I know there has to be more.

9/4/06 - Steve Irwin DIes
9/9/06 - Google agrees to buy Youtube
12/26/06 - James brown and Pres. Ford both die
12/30/06 - Hussein executed
2/8/07 - Anna Nicole DIes

So yea, my list stinks so far. Any help?

Did Ohio get a new senator or your area get a new congressman? (Governor could work too)

I can't recall much off the hand, but the Wikipedia current events lists for 2006 and 2007 might be worth reading through.

EDIT: Then there are also the monthly lists that have a mention of most important headline news worldwide from each day.

Troop surge,
IPCC report,
Mark Foley,
North Korea joins the nuke club,
US hits 300 Million,
Britney splits with k-fed (zomg).

Not a lot of upbeat stuff, I'm afraid. [Frown]

That's the problem I keep coming back to. Most of the events that are note worthy are either real downers or things the kids are probably not aware of as young adults in a society that puts more emphasis on K-fed and Britney than it does on political, social and economical events.

I'm trying to keep it light but I keep coming back to events like the Bus accident in Atlanta with the Bluffton Baseball team. It's very significant in our area. Bluffton is only 20 minutes from our school and one of the students who died was a graduate of our district. But in a celebration that honors achievment I hate putting in so much disaster. It's relevant and inportant to remember but... I don't know...

Should a section like this even go in? or should I bi-pass it altogether and stay focused on the students?

Pluto is no longer a planet.
First Muslim Congress rep elected (to balance the middle east mess)
Microloans win the Nobel Peace Prize
Bulgaria and Romania join the EU.

Try looking at the Kid's Choices awards to see who won, or other things like that.

I think it's a great idea, but if you haven't done it in previous years and most of this year's big events are depressing this might not be the year to start.
