My mother, aunt, and I are trying to get fit and I found a great way to motivate myself and keep track of my goals toward fitness - The Tolkien Walk.

Simply put, using the Atlas of Middle Earth by Karen Fonstad, you track your total mileage and see where you are on the journey that Frodo, Sam and the Fellowship took.

There is a website, but since I own the atlas (which is a gorgeous book and if you don't own it I recommend you buy it), I'm tracking it for myself and I've made copies of the relevant maps so I can track my progress with a highlighter.

If anybody is interested, maybe we could post updates on this thread when we reach certain milestones? All you do is keep track of how many miles you do either walking, jogging, cycling, swimming whatever, and then post it here and we'll see where you are! The website is here and the first major milestone is Frodo and Sam's first campsite in the Green Hill Country, 18 miles from Bag End. Frodo and Sam did it in five hours. It will take me probably longer than that, and I won't do it all in one night. [Smile]

But I'm two miles down the road already. Who wants to go with me?

The road goes ever on and on...

Hatrack's cumulative total, rounded to whole miles:

As of 5/10/07:

50 miles

The Hatrack nation is:

We departed Bag End on September 23rd (aka May 9, 2007) for Rivendell.

We camped last night in the Green River country in a firwood, just over the top of a hill. We were seen by a fox.

We set out the next morning, late and traveled until we saw a Black rider. We hid, then set out again. Currently we are traveling about a stone's throw left of the road, and the going is slower. It is September 24th.

Updated through Speed's 19 miles.

See new posts for updates.

Wow, thank you for the awesome idea. I've been trying to find more motivation to walk, and I'm sure my inner nerd (and often times outer nerd) will find this easy motivation. I'm going to get out my new shillelagh and a hobbit-worthy hat and start hiking.

Hopefully a nasal minstrel will follow me around to enliven my journey.

I'm going to have to look for a Dragonlance Walking Tour, so my GF can pretend she's Tasslehoff. [Smile]

You know, 3 1/2 mph is pretty good for short little hobbit legs.

That sounds really fun. I've been trying to get the motivation to go to the gym more, to lose some weight and gain back my endurance so I can do Lifeguard training. I'll start this tonight, when I go do one of the bikes.

Wow, this is such an interesting idea! It'll be motivation for me to run more as I prepare for the next cross-country season. Myself in Middle-earth.

Except...they had horses and eagles part of the way.

And boats. I think I'll track the journey down the Anduin against white-water rafting trips.

No spelunking for me, though. If I did the Pippin/Merry trip, I'd also have to find some Orcs to carry me part of the way.

This is a great idea, Belle!

Everytime I had to bike up a steep hill, I used to imagine I was carrying Frodo up Mount Doom.

What a good idea. Thanks for sharing, Belle.

8.55 miles biked today, in about a half an hour.

Tinros, you are on the first slopes of the Green Hill Country. Hobbiton is just fading out of sight.

You know, another thing that might be cool is let's track how far the Hatrack nation has walked, if we combine all our mileages.

I'll edit the first post with the updated count. [Smile]

I ran 7 more miles today. Anyone else got any updates?

Posted by Dan_raven (Member # 3383) on :

Alas, I am taking the Gandalf trek. That means I travel some on foot, then fall for even more miles, get resurrected via an internal magical trip to the home of the Valar, then spend the rest of my time traveling via a magical enchanted horse some call Shadowfax, but I call a 2005 Dodge Stratus.

Not buying that, huh? Well, I may join you in about 6 months. I don't have any place to walk where I am at, but if we sell our mystical magical house, and our offer is accepted on the new magical mystical house, then I'll have sidewalks galore to while away my hours and excess body fat.

Is this the same as the Walking to Rivendell program? I've been doing that for about a month, and I'm at about 75 miles total.

This is a great idea! I requested that atlas through my library so that I can do the map thing. According to my pedometer, I walked 3.27 miles today. Most of that was while doing farm chores and building a fence.

My teammate and I walked one mile today. She walked. I guess she must have carried me, or else I rode some sort of quadruped.

I am so into this, though!

Does anyone have a pedometer that actually works? I would love to get one.

I'd like it if we got posts from the OP every now and then to describe where we have been and so forth, instead of just updating the first post. Makes it more jolly ^^.

Posted by Belle (Member # 2314) on :

Ok, that's cool. I can do new posts, if you like. But I still want to update the total on the original post.

Including my contribution for today, I have us at 14 more miles, for a total of 50 miles.

Where the Hatrack Nation is:

Last night we camped in the Woody End. A green floor in the wood, roofed by boughs of trees. To the east a steep shoulder falls, and we could overlook the river valley. The lights of the village of Woodhall were seen below (ca. 11 p.m.).

We arose today after sleeping late (we finally got on the road about 11:00 am) Frodo decided to cut SE to Buckleberry Ferry. We scrambled down a hill into the thick trees below. It began to cloud up.

A deep-banked stream below the hill cut across our path. Looking back, we saw a Black Rider on the hillcrest where we had camped. We forced through the bushes alongside the stream.
Pippin realized it is the Stock-brook. The banks are low enough now for us to cross. The land on its south bank is wet and reedy.

We reached a belt of trees, mostly oaks with a few elms and ash. Drops of rain begin to fall.

It is September the 25th.

Belle, is it OK if I add my own team's totals?
So far, that would be one mile.

I don't mind, the more the merrier.

My mom and aunt and I are just tracking our individual progress, it's hilarious, I got an email this morning that said "I've reached the great road!"

The more people we have contributing to our group walk, the faster we'll get places. [Wink]

I just ordered a decent pedometer ($19.95 on Amazon.com) so I can start tracking. I'm excited to get going again, and once school lets out I'm going to start running. *gulp* [Smile]

I ran/walked 4 miles this week if you want to add it to the Hatrack total.

I too will be clocking in some rafting AND canoeing miles this summer for my section of the Anduin. [Smile]

I've ellipticalled 8 miles this week, treadmilled 3, and stationary-biked 13, but I've never been able to finish a Tolkien book, and I fell asleep during the first movie and never tried the later ones. I don't know if you want to count my miles or not.

Umm... I've been debating whether or not to participate in this. But, if we're keeping a Hatrack total I really ought not. My job starting in a week is gonna require me to do something like 20 miles a day. And training for it the week leading in should be at least 4 or 5 miles. So umm... yeah, I'd artificially inflate the numbers. Maybe I can do separate or something...

Another 5 miles today (1 walking, 4 biking).

Here's my record for the week:

05-09: 2 miles walking to school and then back home.
05-10: 2 miles walking to school and then back home, 2.5 miles at a track meet.
05-11: 2 miles walking to school and then back home, 3 miles running.
05-12: 0.25 miles running and 2 miles walking at a charity event.

That's a total of 6.75 miles.

Is that on foot, on a bike, or in a car? I can't imagine running 3/4 of a marathon every day. If you're doing that on foot, you're in some fairly impressive shape.

Anyway, I ran 6 miles yesterday. Maybe more, but I went off my measured track, so I'm not sure. I know it was at least 6 miles, so that's what I'm counting.

Sorry, I've been away for a couple days, busy weekend with the kids. I counted 53.75 miles since my last post, (which includes my most recent contribution) so we round up to 54, for a cumulative total of 104 miles.

Where the Hatrack nation is:

Since our last update we have stopped and eaten with Farmer Maggot, and we met Merry at the Buckleberry Ferry landing. We've seen a Black rider or riders several times. We spent the night of the 25th in Crickhollow.

On the 26th we arose and continued, but got lost. We stopped to rest by Old Man Willow, a mistake that was almost very costly. Fortunately, we were rescued by Tom Bombadil.

On the 27th, it rained all day so we rested at Tom's house.

Today we left Tom Bombadil's house and climbed a zig-zag path to the brow of a hill on the west side of the Barrow-downs (ca. 9 a.m.). We turned more east than we intended and entered the Barrow-downs, a place of great dread: inhabited by evil Barrow-wights from Angmar.

It is September the 28th.

[Can I just say this is so much fun, it's like re-living the book!]

My second week of regular exercise and I worked up to 2 miles! It was actually easier than I thought it would be, so I'll probably spend only one week at this level before trying to go for 3 miles, instead of the 2 weeks I'd planned.

I'm sore, but it's a nice kind of sore. A friend who is a personal trainer showed me some ab exercises that wouldn't put too much strain on my large abdominal incision area, but would help start to stretch the scar tissue and adhesions out. (right now ab exercises are pretty painful, with a lot of pulling and burning which I'm sure is due to scar tissue and such) I've done what she said, and lifted weights three times last week, did cardio five times, and ate well - no starving - and I lost three pounds. [Smile]

Last week I clocked in 19.0 miles. 12.0 of that was since 5/9. And in reality, it's more, that's just the measurable mileage. I don't trust my pedometer anymore... one day it'll tell me I've walked 1400 steps from home to the train, the next only 800. Yeah, I'd love to find one that actually works.

How do you measure your miles when you're walking? I go by visual guides, but those are for finding my way around not measuring miles. [Smile] Do you count steps? I suppose a map of the local area would work...

I walked 2 miles roundtrip for a game of tennis yesterday. [Smile]

Posted by Speed (Member # 5162) on :

I do a lot of my running on a treadmill. Also, there are several routes around my work that I go jog on breaks, and I've measured them all with my car so that I know how far I'm going. Other than that, I don't trust pedometers and you'd have to go rather a long way on a straight stretch of road before Mapquest would help, so I don't know.

7 more miles run today.

Posted by Belle (Member # 2314) on :

Current cumulative total: 165 miles.

Where the Hatrack nation is:

Since our last update we have been really busy. First we were captured by the Barrow-wights, but fortunately Tom rescued us again.

We reached Bree on September the 29th, which was 135 miles from home. There we met Strider. "All that is gold does not glitter, not all those who wander are lost...".

We left Bree around 9:30 am, on the East road. We turned off the road five miles later and went north into Chetwood. We stayed in Chetwood two days, camping the nights of the 30th and October 1st in the Chetwood. Today we headed out and have just left the Chetwood. The Midgewater Marshes are just ahead. It is October the 2nd.

Ran 1.93 miles yesterday. I'll edit with my day's walking later, but it's going to be around 2.5 mi. So I guess a total of 4.43 mi.

Edit: I went for a walk at lunch and walked another 2.5 miles. So, a total of 6.93 miles.

I use the ruler function in Google Earth to measure routes. If you live someplace with a decent satellite photo, you can use landmarks to pinpoint the precise locations.

I've gotten 15 more miles since the last number I posted.

What a nifty idea, Belle! [Smile] Jazzercise and yoga probably don't count, but Nathan and I walked a two-mile there and back again walk yesterday to go sit by Puget Sound and have mom-son time.

Posted by Elizabeth (Member # 5218) on :

Jazzercise and yoga could count, actually. If I converted the exercise into WeightWatcher's exercise points, I could come up with the miles you would have walked.

Posted by Shan (Member # 4550) on :

1 hour of yoga Wednesday.
1 hour jazzercise Thursday (after the walk, I might add! *grin*)

Thanks, ELizabeth!

Alright, I start crew (and therefor disappear from the web save for weekly appearances) tomorrow. Let the miles begin building up [Big Grin]

Posted by Elizabeth (Member # 5218) on :

OK, I used to be on WeightWatchers Online and could put in specific activities, but I have to do it based on this criteria:

Shan, what would you say the intensity level of yoga is, low, moderate, or high?

I know jazzercise would be high. In fact, I am out of breath just thinking about it.

So, one hour of jazzercise(high intensity)= 6 points.

To walk an hour at a moderate clip would be about 4 miles. But if you jogged, or walked faster than 1 mile every fifteen minutes, it would be 5 miles.

So, I would put jazzercise at 4-5 miles an hour. You can decide. (I would say 5)

I think yoga would be 2 miles an hour.

Posted by Elizabeth (Member # 5218) on :

OK, Belle, does this look OK for a conversion of non-walking/forward-moving miles?

For every 15 minutes of exercise which is not a mile-eating type:

Low Intensity: .5 miles

Moderate intensity: 1 mile

High intensity: 2 miles

Posted by Elizabeth (Member # 5218) on :

Also, I teach standing up. (there are many teachers who sit down for much of the day)

I am also a pacer, so can I count an hour of working as 1/4 of a mile?

Anyone a waiter or waitress? I bet you walk a mile or more an hour.

Can we count those miles, too?

Posted by Shan (Member # 4550) on :

Hi Elizabeth! Hi-intensity jazzercise (which I accomodate to "low" intensity by not getting my upper body as involved as some, so as not to crink my back too bad.)

"Gentle" yoga -- restorative style.

When I walk, I book, though. Pound out the frustrations, as it were. *grin*

But for the sake of the game, let's say 4 miles for jazzercise and 1 for yoga? We don't want the road to end too quickly. *grin*

I don't want to make a decision on how to convert - that's out of my area of expertise. [Smile] Do whatever you think is right for you and just post your converted mileage and I'll add it. Myself, in my person walk I only count what I do as exercise, not anything that I do in my daily activities. But this is a lighthearted game, not serious business, so do whatever you feel. Have fun with it, it's meant to be fun. If we try to bog it down with too many rules it will take the fun out.

So...here we go...

Hatrack's cumulative total is 220 miles.

Since our last update, we traveled into the Midgewater Marshes. We camped in the marshes the night of the 2nd. On the night of the 3rd, we camped again and could see flashes of light off in the distance, which we later learned was Gandalf at Weathertop. On October 4th we reached the edge of the Marshes. Today we set out on a clear, cool morning with frost on the ground. We can see crumbled ruins ahead.

It is October the 5th.

Since our last update, we've had an adventurous time. We camped at Weathertop, where Frodo was injured by Nazgul. We placed him on Bill the pony, and headed back to the Great Road, crossing it to camp in the thickets on the south side. We set out again, covered 19 miles then camped again. We're now on our 4th day out from Weathertop and Frodo is not doing well. Things are looking grim. I hope we find some help soon. [Frown]

It is October 10th. Our cumulative miles are 307.

I can add another 50 miles at least on to the total.

Monday: ~10 miles (walking)
Tuesday: ~10 miles (walking)
Wednesday: ~20 miles (walking -- that one was fun, started at 8:30 am left the woods at 10:13 pm using head lamps... so many blow downs)
Thursday: ~4 miles (walking -- it was a training day)
Friday: 9.8 miles (still with the walking)

I'm gonna try and get more exact numbers for the other days. They don't exactly tell us the distances around here and the maps don't have readable scales (makes trying to figure out where you are annoying as heck).

We did it! We can see Rivendell!

It was touch and go for a while, but when Glorfindel arrived, it really helped. Then followed a desperate flight to the Ford, where Frodo bravely faced the Black Riders, even though he was gravely injured. Thanks to Elrond's summoning of the River the Black Rider's Horses were drowned and the riders themselves had to flee. A company of elves found Frodo and are carrying him to Rivendell. We are only four miles away from a place where we can rest and recover.

Hatrack's cumulative total: 454 miles

It is October 20th.

My personal total is now 36 miles. In less than a month. I'm actually kind of proud of that.

That total is exercise only - not normal everyday activities and it's all either walking or walking with short running intervals.

[Smile] Way to go, Belle!

Since the May 24 report, here are the miles:

5/29 -- 4 miles (jazzercise)
5/30 -- 1 mile (yoga)
6/3 -- 3.5 miles (hiking)
6/5 -- 4 miles (jazzercise)
6/6 -- 1 mile (yoga)

I did a ton of yardwork over Memorial Day weekend, but I have absolutely no idea how to count that. My body could sure feel it, though . . . eee gads!

Derrell, wow! What are you up to?

Posted by Derrell (Member # 6062) on :

Since I started posting in this thread, I've walked about 70 miles. That was all at work. I normally average about 30 miles a week. No wonder my feet hurt when I get home.

Derrell, do you have a pedometer? What is your work?

Posted by Derrell (Member # 6062) on :

Yes, I have a pedometer. I do custodial work at a grocery store. That includes sweeping the store every hour.

Thanks, Derrell.
I wish I had gotten mine before summer vacation so I could see how many miles I walk as I teach. I tend to the dramatic side of things, so i do a lot of pacing and arm-waving.
Now, I am a sad sack, but trying to move more. The pedometer really helps that.

A 5 mile ride for me. I'm trying to get used to a road bike I've borrowed for the month.

Okay this is not working. So many people are posting cumulative miles and I'm confused as to what is new mileage and what isn't.

Since we made it to Rivendell as a forum, I say from now on people just keep track and let us know where they are individually. We can still use this thread, to post our accomplishments.

For example, I'm now up to 70 miles since 5/8/07 which means I'm at Buckleberry Ferry and only three miles away from sleeping at Crickhollow for the night.

12 more miles by bike yesterday for me.

Posted by Eaquae Legit (Member # 3063) on :

33.2 miles in the past two days.

Since I started tracking in this thread, I've gone 250.4 miles by bike and by foot. I'll have to check my location as soon as I can find my copy of the atlas.
